Why Robert S. Baker chose Cortez

I originally came to Cortez in 1974 and worked in a local boat yard for 3 years until I got my Florida pharmacy liscense. I fell in love with 'the village' and villagers and decided to return last year

What makes this cottage unique

The Pelican cottage has that old florida costal cottage style. The cottage is located in the village atmosphere and has hard wood floors and period furnishing harkening back to a world of peaceful coexistant with ones environment.

The Perfect Vacation Cottage

  • 5 of 5
Wow Where do I start? We spent 7 nights at The Pelican Cottage last week, simply amazing! The owner Steve is very helpful when arranging your stay. They really make sure you have everything you need there. I am a Florida resident and I used to rent my properties so I know how precious this house really is and how painstakingly hard they must have worked at restoration. It was immaculate and I fell in love with it. I also hold a travel agent license the past 8 years mostly for fun and have traveled all over and we even lived on an island in Florida for a year. Every single expectation was met on this trip. The Village has a quaint charm that you simply don't find much of anymore. Annna Maria and Bradenton have everything you could want. Our house is on the East coast of FL and we have the same stores and the Atlantic but Cortez has the calmer waters of the Gulf and they have the historic working fishing village with local eateries and tiny family ran businesses which just puts you at peace with a slower paced style of living. We tried Steve's recommendation for the Cortez Cafe dynamite breakfast. So is Judy's Kitchen. Hubby could not dive even though it is right down the road due to weather but that just will get us back there again really soon! We were beach bums for only 2 hrs a day (too hot to sit out much longer) but we went to each beach. We rode the provided bikes one day across to the beach. We enjoyed the Verizon FIOS as we both run businesses online! We went to Sarasota to the Cinema nice 25 min scenic drive. We went to the Red Barn Flea Market, Ellenton Outlets. We went to Island Time Bar and Grill on our last evening live music good wings and Ice Cream next door after. We went to the Oyster Bar which also recommended by Steve. Most meals we went to Publix and WalMart and prepped in house as the kitchen is beautiful and has all that you need. The back yard is ideal for sitting out and if your into yoga like me the hardwood floors he refinished are perfect to roll your mat out and do some stretching each morning listening to the beautiful Pelicans and other various tropical friends outside. There is just so much to do or nothing at all. The artists are awesome. I dreaming of a way to find my tiny piece of paradise in Cortez for a second home! I lived in Key West this trip took me back to that feeling in a lot of respects. I highly recommend you try Steve's house in Cortez and opt for Anna Maria Island vacation as your destiny at least once!

Great place!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed in this very clean and comfortable cottage for 10 days. It is in a great neighborhood with very friendly neighbors. The cottage had everything that we needed and more. Several restaurants with great food were within walking distance. We walked over to Starfish Company for lunch and to take a fun boat ride with Captain Patsy (Captain Kathe is great too)! We were close enough to walk or ride a bike over to Bradenton Beach and were able to bike all over Anna Maria Island. The Owner is fantastic. We locked ourselves out and he responded immediately to help us get back in. He also checked in during the week to make sure we were having a great time. I highly recommend staying in this cottage and the price is amazing!!

A very romantic and affordable stay at this lovely cottage. Peaceful and friendly neighborhood and very close to the beach. The owner of the property provides an abundant of ammenities in this charming cottage and makes you feel right at home. We would compare our visit to staying at a 5-star hotel. Thanks again for your gracious hospitality and we would definately visit again or highly recommend this property to others.

The Pelican Cottage surpassed my expectations!

  • 5 of 5
The property was more than what I expected. I had been in the same home many years ago and can attest to the wonderful renovations completed. The location is fantastic, very nice quiet street, walking distance to the best restaurants on Florida's Gulf Coast, some great tourist locations and the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to!

We cycled around the village and over the bridge to Anna Maria Island for shopping, to get to the beach and just to get out and see the sights. There is a great bike path along the beach all the way up to Longboat Key Bridge.

The house was very clean with all amenities we needed. It was beautiful sitting out on the back patio late in the afternoons, getting ready for the sun to set. Plenty of towels, beach and bath as well as extra blankets and pillows. Although we didn't spend much time inside, the TV coverage was great, we didn't miss a thing.

Starfish restaurant is right around the corner and you cannot leave Cortez without eating there...The chowder is unbelievable (we even went the day we were leaving just to grab one last taste of chowder before heading North)...Just remember to bring cash and patience. It's busy but worth the wait...Or go early.

Taylor's Ice Cream was another favorite spot, our daughter went almost every day.

And for breakfast or brunch don't forget to visit the Cortez Cafe!

Felt just like home, it was hard to leave and we can't wait to get back to the Pelican Cottage. It's a keeper!

Cortez is a quaint fishing village established in 1860 and still functioning today. Just walking around an observing the old Florida fishing cottages with their large yards(for drying nets) is interesting Then there is the local restaurant and fresh fish store Star Fish (2 blocks), the Cortez Kitchen bar with live music( fri.sat, sun) which has excellent food, and the sword fish grill, all with in easy walking distance. Then there is the Cortez café for Sunday breakfast(or any day) next to the post office where you have to walk to get your mail. The Cortez market is across the street next to one of the many local antique and coastal art shops of the area. Then there are the beaches (coquina-all shells,Bradenton ,Holms, and Anna Maria) which are some of the best beaches in the world. Then there is Anna Maria fishing pier on the pass into Tampa bay.

Then there are the miles of mangrove creeks on the Inercoastal Waterway and Palma Sola Bay( 2 persons kayak provided) Then there are many kinds of water sports boating ,jet skiing , para-sailing,and sailing. Then there is downtown Sarasota with its many restaurants and live theaters. All in all the pleasant year round temperatures and quaint atmosphere make Cortez wonderful.
