Machiasport House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6. Changeover day is Sunday.

-A beautiful and unique waterfront home on the mainland in coastal Maine with spectacular views and even your own private island just offshore! A peaceful retreat that you will want to return to again and again.

Featherbed Island House ( in downeast Maine is perfect for:

--WRITERS - it would be a grand space for a writing workshop

--BIRDERS - a true bird-watching paradise

At Featherbed Island House, we try to be gentle on the earth that we share with creatures large and small.

Our property is certified by the state of Maine DEP as a CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER IN HOSPITALITY; and by the National Wildlife Federation as a BACKYARD WILDLIFE HABITAT - a perfect spot for birders and all nature lovers. We are also located within a Machiasport significant critical habitat for shorebirds. All of our property is smoke-free (except for the fire-pit, of course). We are also certified by the American Vacation Rental Owners Association (AVROA).

The property is salt waterfront on an estuary where the river greets the ocean, a prime spot to observe nature.

-PRIVATE ISLAND - Featherbed Island - just offshore - one acre (more or less), uninhabited but a frequent stop for eagles and seals and other shorebirds.

Rumor has it that the pirate, Captain Black Sam Bellamy buried his treasure somewhere in proximity to this very property! (But please, no digging!).

-- GREAT ROOM with a two-story wall of windows and soaring ceiling is a comfortable gathering space to hold conversation or just gaze out over the water. The dining area easily accommodates six hungry guests.

-- THE LIBRARY has french doors - left open to expand the living space of the great room, or closed for more separation. The library holds is an old-time wooden phonograph with a selection of 78 records (Dancing anyone? Waltz or perhaps a fox trot?) and an easel for the artist. It is full of books, CD library and an entire closet of board games and puzzles.

-- COZY DEN often becomes the unofficial kids room and has a flat screen television and dvd player and library of DVD movies from kids to grown-up selections.

-- KITCHEN AND PANTRY: A well equipped kitchen has it’s own walk in pantry complete with a Belgian waffle maker, veggie and citrus juicers, blender, lobster pot (of course!) and many gadgets and gismos for whipping up a gourmet meal. The view from the kitchen window overlooks the freshwater pond. If you are lucky, you might see a deer (or a moose) quenching his thirst, and you will almost certainly see a heron or other shorebird looking for a good meal.

-- THE MASTER BEDROOM - has a queen bed with a gel memory foam mattress topper, a variety of pillows, crisp quality sheets, fluffy duvets and boho quilts for a dreamy sleep. The view is out over the great room through the prow windows to the water. There are privacy drapes for privacy to the room below.

-- THE SECOND BEDROOM has a double bed with a cozy duvet and a dormer window overlooking the water.

-- THE THIRD BEDROOM is small with a twin bed topped with an inviting gel/memory foam topper, crisp sheets, and soft duvet.

---Upstairs - a spacious, tiled full bath with tub/shower combination.

--- Downstairs - a 3/4 bath with shower and laundry is on the 1st floor.

Plenty of fluffy towels are provided.

Machiasport is the idyllic central location as the home base for your bold coast Maine vacation.

About Maria and Gary

Maria and Gary Lamb - thats us! We have owned vacation rental properties in Cape Cod, Maine and Nova Scotia for over 10 years. Now we are impatiently waiting for retirement so we can enjoy the charms of Featherbed Island House full-time. Until then, we are thrilled that we are able to share our special place with you.

Why Maria and Gary chose Machiasport

While driving through Maine, we stopped by out of curiosity just to take a look at the Featherbed Island House, which was up for sale. We were so enthralled by the yellow house and it’s breathtaking view that we made the 800 mile round trip back the next weekend to make an offer on the cottage (and the history).

What makes this house unique

Machiasport is the ideal central location in downeast Maine. We've found that the Bar Harbor and the Acadia area are much too crowded especially in summer and fall, and southern Maine has sadly become suburbia. Machiasport is a idyllic retreat - the REAL Maine - the Maine with character - and it's perfectly located. The central location is perfect for day trips everywhere from the mid-coast to bold-coast without having to deal with the crowds.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had great weather all week. Perfect for touring! Down east Maine is beautiful and we enjoyed visiting Cutler, Jonesport, Lubec, Machias area and Eastport. Got to see bald eagles, deer and the infamous chipmunk to name a few. The lobster dinners were great as usual. This completes our tour of the Maine coast over the past few years. Next stop will be the mountain areas.

Perfect Fall Getaway

I was worried Maine in November would be too cold, but most days I could go out with just a heavy sweater. So this destination is really for every season. The house has a wonderful wood stove that made it extra cozy.

What can I say about the location?? It's gorgeous. There is a pond on the property and a gorgeous water view including Featherbed Island from almost every room in the house. Every morning the beautiful water was the first thing I saw before I even got out of bed.

I love the way this house has lots of reclaimed antique doors, windows ,cabinets etc but it's newly built with all the modern conveniences.

And this house was better stocked with conveniences than my own house. There is an adorable walk in pantry made of antique cabinets filled with every kitchen gadget and appliance imaginable- if you like to cook it has everything you need.

The town of Machias is a 5 minute drive away with a nice supermarket and if you don't want to cook it has cute restaurants and a great gourmet cheese store that sells lots of yummy things besides cheese.

My favorite thing to do was grab a book from the well stocked library and sit either in there or in a chair in front of the big living room window reading and looking at the beautiful water. I even saw a bald eagle! This is the best house I have ever rented in Maine and I know I will be coming back for years to come.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. I'm glad that you had a good time and, for the most part, the weather was pleasant during your stay - although cold. I've found nothing more mesmerizing than sitting and watching the water and wildlife - they put on quite a show every day whether you are outside on the deck or cozy inside looking out.

Will return again!!

This was my second trip of the year to Featherbed Island House. Each time, I bring some work with me, but I just can't get it done because I'm lured to those great big windows and I can do nothing but sit and watch the water and the birds. Fall was the best time to go (okay, anytime is a great time). But autumn was particularly special because of the bird life. Herons and eagles and migrating birds. I might have to become a bird watcher. The house is probably the most well-equipped rental house I have ever stayed it - it has everything that one could ask for. Since my previous trip, the owners have gotten a new professional knife set for the kitchen (very sharp!!) and what looks like all new beautiful linens. A bag of local coffee and some other goodies awaited us at our arrival. This is as close to staying in a B&B as one could get, yet keeping the privacy of a rental home.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Kelly, for your review of our property. We are thrilled that you stayed, not once, but twice this year. Yes, we have made some improvements to the property and will continue to improve - we ask our guests for their suggestions and try our best to implement them so future guests can be content and happy. We hope to see you again next year!

We just returned from two weeks at the Featherbed Island House. This is a VERY special place - both the house itself - as well as the amazing setting. The photos as great but truly don't do it justice. IT IS DRAMATIC! And the house is just lovely. Very comfortable and stylish - with everything you need right there to cook, grill, relax, and just enjoy some down time. And there's really lots of great things to do in the area if you like to explore. The locals are great fun.. Maria and Gary have done a great job to make a DownEast vacation truly memorable.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review, Kathleen. I'm so glad that you enjoyed your stay and it was very nice getting to know you better via e-mail. I agree that the pictures don't do it justice. I've found it difficult to really capture the.... vastness... of the magnificent landscape. Please keep in touch!

Amazing place!

We just got back from a week at featherbed island and can't say enough wonderful things! The house itself is beautiful with fantastic views and has everything you could need- the owner had even left birthday candles which she told us about as it was my daughter's birthday! The property the house sits on is gorgeous. My favorite thing to do was sit out on the adirondack chairs and watch the seals, eagles, hummingbirds and other sea birds go by. It was so peaceful. My family also likes muck so we had a great time exploring the beach at low tide and wading in the water. We brought our kayaks and had fun adventures out with the seals. All around a great vacation!

Owner's Response: Thanks, Megan. We're so glad that you and both your family and fur baby had a wonderful stay!

Wonderfully quiet with spectacular view!

My husband and I had a wonderful week here. The view of the water is spectacular and the house very comfortable. We went on three glorious hikes that we'll never forget (one about 10 minutes away and two near the town of Cutler about 20 minutes away).

My only note of caution is that if you are 6'5" or taller, this may not be a good fit for you... my husband hit his head three times on the door frames. It's an older house very nicely updated and decorated, but the door frames weren't built for tall people.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words, Helen. We loved seeing the picture that you painted during your stay. And there really aren't any places to hike in the area that aren't beautiful. One note - the house is actually a new(er) house - built in 2000. But the former owner, an artist himself, designed it using vintage architectural materials. It really has the feel of an old home (and yes, most of the doors are antiques - and folks from the 19th century were a bit shorter than today).

A vacation unlike any other

  • 5 of 5

It’s been a week since I left the beautiful Featherbed Island house. I’ve been dreading doing this review because I just don’t think I have the capacity to truly capture its beauty with words.

We were all tired from the long 9 hour drive from NYC to Machiasport, but I will never forget how magical it was when we first arrived at the house. Nestled at the end of a small winding street, you drive pas a few other houses, some more derelict than others. Just as your expectations are dampened, the trees give way to reveal a beautiful house in an almost impossible setting. Having always stayed exclusively in hotels and resorts for vacations, this city kid could not have stayed at a more polarizing place than that I was used to. The air was clean with a lingering scent of sea, the sky a shade of blue I have rarely seen, and the noise, or rather the lack of was comforting. And the view, every review should start and end with the view.

Aside from the aesthetics of the house from the outside, the inside is equally beautiful. It also came equipped with everything we needed, we were able to cook full meals almost every night and ate our meals on the deck frequently. We made a trip to visit Acadia National Park, and another trip to Bangor during the day Hurricane Arthur hit to do some shopping. Otherwise we travelled mostly around the area, we went to Lubec and Campobello Island, saw a parade on 4th of July at Eastport and had a nice walk at Roque Bluff beach. The location, although a bit far from the big cities (2 hours to Acadia, 3 hours to Portland), did not prove to be too bad as we had plenty to do nearby.

It’s honestly hard to think of anything negative from the trip. Mosquitos were probably the only thing that bothered us, they had a field day with me, perhaps NYC blood was something they haven’t had in a while. We bought a few of those candles and tiki torches and sprayed ourselves to no avail. But what’s a few bites to experience this retreat.

All in all this was one of the best vacations I’ve taken. My parents could not stressing how much they loved it there and my sister had a field day instagraming away. The wifi in the house was fast enough to upload pictures and carry about our usual needs. On our last day of the stay, Hurricane Arthur hit and we lost electricity. Maria was extremely helpful, we didn’t mind too much since this is completely out of their control. We ended up playing cards over candle lights and had a blast star gazing.

Owner's Response: We are so happy that you enjoyed your respite from the hustle and bustle of the big city. (And we hope that your sister enjoyed the fire pit, as I know she was looking forward to it). I can't thank you enough for being such good sports when tropical storm Arthur hit the area - you really rolled with it, which we appreciate greatly. Maine is prepared for blizzards, but tropical storms, not so much. We have learned from this and will be leaving an 'emergency kit' at the cottage the next time we get there. Unfortunately, I have no remedy for bugs except bug spray and citronella candles (we've even planted herbs with bug repellent qualities). There is a saying that Maine has four seasons - winter, mud, bug and tourist. Unfortunately, sometimes bug and tourist seasons overlap. We hope that your family comes to visit Featherbed Island House again on your next trip to the country!
