BONFIRES, FROLICKING SEALS, S'MORES & VACATIONLAND DREAMS. SUPER AUTUMN SPECIAL!

Machiasport Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6. Changeover day is Sunday.

A beautiful and unique home with spectacular views and even your own private ocean island just offshore!

Our property is certified by the state of Maine DEP as a 'Certified Environmental Leader in Hospitality' and by the National Wildlife Federation as a 'Backyard Wildlife Habitat' - a perfect spot for birders and all nature lovers.

Featherbed Island House is perfect for artists of all types,

nature lovers, romantic getaways and families.

Located privately at the very end of a drive, surrounded by water and acres of forest. You will enjoy the casual elegance of a spacious three-bedroom home tastefully decorated with artsy and whimsical treasures - certainly an unexpected change from your typical Maine cabin - you won't find any knotty pine, moose decor, or musty old bedspreads here.

The Grounds: The property is saltwaterfront on an estuary where it greets the ocean, a prime spot to observe the splendor of nature. Depending on season, there is a large, rolling lawn, a freshwater pond, flowers, apple trees and blueberries to pick.

There is a grassy, tidal area for kayak launching with a small floating dock to tie up your kayak (not a swimming raft). Just offshore is your own tiny private island, a frequent stop for eagles and seals. Rumor has it that the pirate, Cap't Black Sam Bellamy buried his treasure somewhere in proximity to this very property! (But please, no digging!).

The House: The yellow-house is only 80 feet from the water with unobstructed views of the water, island, the rocky shore, marshes and profile of Machiasport beyond. There is plenty of space to spread out....

-- great room with a wall of windows,

-- library,

-- tv room

A well equipped kitchen has it’s own walk in pantry complete with a Belgian waffle maker, veggie and citrus juicers, blender, lobster pot (of course!) and many gadgets and gismos if whipping up a gourmet meal is what you crave. The view from the kitchen window overlooks the freshwater pond. If you are lucky, you might see a deer (or a moose) quenching his thirst.

The master bedroom - The Moonlight Bedroom - has a queen bed and views out over the great room to the water. There is a privacy shade for complete privacy to the room below.

The Eagle Perch bedroom has a double bed and a dormer window overlooking the water.

The Deer Watch bedroom has a twin bed and overlooks the woodlands.

All three bedrooms share a spacious upstairs full bath. A second bath with shower and laundry is on the 1st floor.

The house comes with all things designed to make you feel right at home. The library is full of books and CD's and 'books on CD's'. There is even an 'old-time' radio/phonograph and an easel for the artist in you. The TV room has a small library of DVD movies from kids to adult selections. There are board games and puzzles for rainy days, balls and bocce for sun. We think we've covered everything from cookbooks and cupcake tins and popsicle molds to lobster bibs to eco-friendly laundry detergent to plenty of vases perfect for gathering flowers around the property.

The Area:

Machiasport is the perfect central location as the homebase for your bold coast Maine vacation.

It's perfectly placed for day tripping to:

Bar Harbor (90 minutes),

Acadia Nat'l Park (90 minutes)

artsy Eastport (45 minutes)

Campobello Island (45 minutes)

St. Stephen, NB - Canada's chocolate town (90 minutes)

and all of the coves and fishing villages in between.

Machiasport is a rural village with quaint small-town character. Just a few miles down the road you'll find the vibrant town of Machias where you will find a supermarket, restaurants, pubs, a farmer's market and the University of Maine.

There is no need to fight the summer crowds in Acadia!

Relax in the casual elegance of the Featherbed Island House in down east Maine - far from the crowds but near enough to everything fantastic.

Changeover day is **Sunday***.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Can you swim at the property?

The property is waterfront, so technically you can swim from the front yard. There is a grassy, tidal area that is the access to the water. However the water between the house and island is very shallow and the water is very cold (rarely gets higher than the 50's). Also, the bottom is mud (strap on water shoes are recommended). Nearby Roque Bluffs State Park may be a better bet for actual swimming - they have both a sandy beach AND a warmer, fresh water lake.

Is the property private?

Featherbed Island House is located at the very end of a 1/4 mile small country road. There are four other houses on the road, but only one is visible down the driveway. One side of the property is water and, except for the driveway, the remaining three sides are acres of woods. The road is narrow, but paved up to our dirt driveway. Machias, with a grocery store, restaurants (in other words - civilization!) is four miles away.

How many people does the cottage sleep?

The house has three bedrooms - a queen, double, and twin. There is also a pull out sofa in the great room and a non-pull out sofa in the den. Even though, technically, you could squeeze in a lot of people, the total occupancy is capped at a maximum of SIX total (adults and children). There is plenty of room inside to spread out - the great room, tv room/den and a library.

Is the house suitable for elderly?

We certainly think it's a great house for everyone but we want you to be able to make an informed choice. All three bedrooms are upstairs. The staircase is 'average' - no steeper than average. The bottom 5 steps have no handrails, however the upper part of the staircase has a handrail on both sides. We also have a pull-out sofa and a non-pull-out sofa and 3/4 bath (shower) on the first floor. There are between 2-3 steps to enter the house.

What about kids?

Featherbed Island House is an awesome house for kids with it's rolling lawns and island to explore! However, the house has not been childproofed and kids must be supervised. Potential obstacles for small children include the loft window from the second floor to the first, a drop from the front lawn down to the water, the pond (and the bay itself) for non-swimmers, steep basement stairs (the basement door can be locked by guests) and garage (which is off-limits to guests anyway).

Pets?

We love animals and will probably love hosting your furry friend. However, there are a few breeds that our insurance company will not allow us to have on the property. We have a waiver for you to sign and there is a $100 fee per pet per week (as an alternative to a kennel). We're happy to send you a copy of the waiver so you can review our doggie house rules.

When can we check in?

Our changeover day is Sunday (no, sorry it can't be changed due to our cleaner's availability). Check in is at 4pm (check out is at 9am). If the house is ready to go before 4pm, we're happy to let you in earlier, but it depends on our cleaner's schedule.

Do you provides kayaks or canoes?

We would love to, but our current insurance coverage won't allow us (but we're working on it for, perhaps next year). You can rent both from Sunrise Canoe and Kayak. Check with them for their policy, but traditionally they will deliver right to the property. If you bring your own, you can moor them on our floating raft.

What is there to do way down east?

If you don't know, then you'd better come and find out! Machiasport and downeast Maine are a nature lover's paradise! So many things to do in the area, you'll want to stay longer! Whale watching... trips to Seal Island to see the Puffins... hiking the Bold Coast trail... biking the Sunrise Trail... Roque Bluffs State Park for swimming at the white sand ocean beach or in the 20 acre lake... the Pirate festival in August and September in Eastport and Lubec... Summerkeys... Band Concerts... Fourth of July Boat Parades.... Spectacular Jasper Beach in Machiasport...Sunset Cruises.... Shopping in Bar Harbor....Eat a lobster... Canoe and Sea Kayak trips...Visit the Fort O'Brien Historic Site....visit the lighthouses... Blueberry Festival...and on and on. Whether you are 8 or 80, there will be things downeast to keep you busy. No wonder Maine is Vacationland.

About Maria and Gary

We've owned vacation rental properties in Cape Cod and Nova Scotia for over 10 years. Now we are impatiently waiting for retirement so we can enjoy the charms of the yellow house full-time. Until then, we are thrilled that we are able to share our special place with you.

Maria and Gary purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Maria and Gary chose Machiasport

While driving through Maine on vacation in 2013, we stopped by out of curiosity just to take a look at the Featherbed Island House, which was up for sale. We were so enthralled by the yellow house and it’s breathtaking view that we made the 800 mile round trip back the next weekend to make an offer on the cottage (and the rest...is history).

What makes this cottage unique

Machiasport is the ideal central location in downeast Maine. We've found that the Bar Harbor and the acadia area is much too crowded especially in summer and fall, but Machiasport is a perfect retreat to be able to make daytrips everywhere on the boldcoast without having to deal with the crowds.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Peaceful time. Had lobster everyday. Town folk are very friendly. Enjoyed the ever changing weather and tides. We were thrilled that Maine practices recycling.

Spectacular!

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from two weeks at the Featherbed Island House. This is a VERY special place - both the house itself - as well as the amazing setting. The photos as great but truly don't do it justice. IT IS DRAMATIC! And the house is just lovely. Very comfortable and stylish - with everything you need right there to cook, grill, relax, and just enjoy some down time. And there's really lots of great things to do in the area if you like to explore. The locals are great fun.. Maria and Gary have done a great job to make a DownEast vacation truly memorable.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review, Kathleen. I'm so glad that you enjoyed your stay and it was very nice getting to know you better via e-mail. I agree that the pictures don't do it justice. I've found it difficult to really capture the.... vastness... of the magnificent landscape. Please keep in touch!

Amazing place!

  • 5 of 5
We just got back from a week at featherbed island and can't say enough wonderful things! The house itself is beautiful with fantastic views and has everything you could need- the owner had even left birthday candles which she told us about as it was my daughter's birthday! The property the house sits on is gorgeous. My favorite thing to do was sit out on the adirondack chairs and watch the seals, eagles, hummingbirds and other sea birds go by. It was so peaceful. My family also likes muck so we had a great time exploring the beach at low tide and wading in the water. We brought our kayaks and had fun adventures out with the seals. All around a great vacation!

Wonderfully quiet with spectacular view!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I had a wonderful week here. The view of the water is spectacular and the house very comfortable. We went on three glorious hikes that we'll never forget (one about 10 minutes away and two near the town of Cutler about 20 minutes away).
My only note of caution is that if you are 6'5" or taller, this may not be a good fit for you... my husband hit his head three times on the door frames. It's an older house very nicely updated and decorated, but the door frames weren't built for tall people.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words, Helen. We loved seeing the picture that you painted during your stay. And there really aren't any places to hike in the area that aren't beautiful. One note - the house is actually a new(er) house - built in 2000. But the former owner, an artist himself, designed it using vintage architectural materials. It really has the feel of an old home (and yes, most of the doors are antiques - and folks from the 19th century were a bit shorter than today).

A vacation unlike any other

  • 5 of 5
It’s been a week since I left the beautiful Featherbed Island house. I’ve been dreading doing this review because I just don’t think I have the capacity to truly capture its beauty with words.
We were all tired from the long 9 hour drive from NYC to Machiasport, but I will never forget how magical it was when we first arrived at the house. Nestled at the end of a small winding street, you drive pas a few other houses, some more derelict than others. Just as your expectations are dampened, the trees give way to reveal a beautiful house in an almost impossible setting. Having always stayed exclusively in hotels and resorts for vacations, this city kid could not have stayed at a more polarizing place than that I was used to. The air was clean with a lingering scent of sea, the sky a shade of blue I have rarely seen, and the noise, or rather the lack of was comforting. And the view, every review should start and end with the view.
Aside from the aesthetics of the house from the outside, the inside is equally beautiful. It also came equipped with everything we needed, we were able to cook full meals almost every night and ate our meals on the deck frequently. We made a trip to visit Acadia National Park, and another trip to Bangor during the day Hurricane Arthur hit to do some shopping. Otherwise we travelled mostly around the area, we went to Lubec and Campobello Island, saw a parade on 4th of July at Eastport and had a nice walk at Roque Bluff beach. The location, although a bit far from the big cities (2 hours to Acadia, 3 hours to Portland), did not prove to be too bad as we had plenty to do nearby.
It’s honestly hard to think of anything negative from the trip. Mosquitos were probably the only thing that bothered us, they had a field day with me, perhaps NYC blood was something they haven’t had in a while. We bought a few of those candles and tiki torches and sprayed ourselves to no avail. But what’s a few bites to experience this retreat.
All in all this was one of the best vacations I’ve taken. My parents could not stressing how much they loved it there and my sister had a field day instagraming away. The wifi in the house was fast enough to upload pictures and carry about our usual needs. On our last day of the stay, Hurricane Arthur hit and we lost electricity. Maria was extremely helpful, we didn’t mind too much since this is completely out of their control. We ended up playing cards over candle lights and had a blast star gazing.

Owner's Response: We are so happy that you enjoyed your respite from the hustle and bustle of the big city. (And we hope that your sister enjoyed the fire pit, as I know she was looking forward to it). I can't thank you enough for being such good sports when tropical storm Arthur hit the area - you really rolled with it, which we appreciate greatly. Maine is prepared for blizzards, but tropical storms, not so much. We have learned from this and will be leaving an 'emergency kit' at the cottage the next time we get there. Unfortunately, I have no remedy for bugs except bug spray and citronella candles (we've even planted herbs with bug repellent qualities). There is a saying that Maine has four seasons - winter, mud, bug and tourist. Unfortunately, sometimes bug and tourist seasons overlap. We hope that your family comes to visit Featherbed Island House again on your next trip to the country!

On the water in Maine

  • 5 of 5
This was my first extended stay in Down East Maine, and I definitely will be coming back to Featherbed Island House. From my bed the moment I woke up, until dark, I was surrounded by views of water, the panorama of Machias Bay which can be seen from every room in the front of the house, including two bedrooms- you can actually see the water from the bed! To the rear of the property there is a tranquil pond, one of the best things about this house is the natural beauty of the setting. An apple tree was in full bloom, the yard was full of lupines and poppies, and we saw wildlife every day, from bald eagles to deer to seals playing in the water. At low tide we walked across the estuary to historic Featherbed Island, with its dense forest and rocky bluffs, it's just beautiful.
I have stayed in many rental houses before, but this is easily the best equipped. There was any kind of kitchen item I needed, from fondue pot to blender and everything in between. The house is beautifully decorated with a combination of lovely Maine antiques and comfortable modern furniture. We loved the fire pit overlooking the water , where we made s'mores one night, and after dark and on the occasional rainy day, there were books, games, music to listen to, including an old Victorola complete with records in addition to the TV and wifi.
Staying at Featherbed Island House was such a great experience that while I was there I started searching for a house to buy in the area. Let me tell you, every house I looked at paled in comparison to the charm of Featherbed Island House itself, and the amazing water views that are seen from it. I will keep looking for my own home in Maine, but until I find it, I will be back to Featherbed Island House as soon as I can- which will have to be in the fall- it is already booked through September. I can already imagine sitting under the pergola on the deck, enjoying the fall colors and the beautiful water views that never get old.

Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5
We were so fortunate that we were able to have a last minute getaway, albeit in the middle of winter. It really didn't matter because the views were really spectacular. There really was nothing better to do than to sit in front of the giant windows and watch the tides flow in and out. We'll definitely be back during a different season!
