About Susy Bickford

We chose this property as our retirement home. Kevin born in Newcastle England and I was born in Cochabamba Bolivia, decided that we would enjoy our retirement years in this home. We both are both world travelers and have lived in more than 8 countries. After many travels and experiences of what the world has to offer we chose to make Kihi Kihi our retirement home.

We have vacationed on the Big Island 14 times and rented homes in different parts of the island and we decided Kona Paradise was where we needed to be. We fell in love with our Kihi Kihi home and we would love for you to enjoy our home during your stay on Hawaii, The Big Island.

Susy Bickford purchased this house in 2013

Why Susy Bickford chose Captain Cook

What attracted us to Kona Paradise was the property is nestled on the mountain and yet we can hear the sound of the surf. Our love of the mountains and the sea, this property met both of our requirements. It was a nicely developed neighborhood the type of homes we liked and it is in walking distance to a beautiful black pebble beach were it is not crowded and we can enjoy seeing dolphins jumping all year round. During whale season, December thru April, whales are frequent visitors to our coast, and can be seen breaching very close to the shore.

We are located three blocks from the bottom of Kona Paradise, typically on The Big Island you have to descend down to the ocean, as you drive down to Kihi Kihi be careful it is quite steep, however take time to enjoy the view it is quite breathtaking.

Enjoy the true Hawaii.

What makes this house unique

The best benefit is having a beautiful beach 3 blocks away and enjoy the view of the water while you enjoy your morning beverage and a beautiful sunset as you enjoy dinner. There are many activities all within a short walk.

The Kings Trail and many local paths for hiking, the beach is popular for diving, snorkeling and swimming without fighting tourist and crowds. For photographers great opportunity for taking amazing underwater pictures, and of rural Hawaii away from the hustle and bustle of the resort areas.

Great Views!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely place to stay. The Pacific Ocean is on display 24/7 and the sunsets are spectacular! The beach is secluded and sem-private and the hiking trails are challenging and fun, with a new surprise around every rock. The house is very well-equipped with every condiment and spice in the pantry anyone could possibly want. The beds are comfortable and the linens are abundant. Be sure to stock up on groceries before you come. The house is quite a ways from the nearest large grocery store. And probably best to leave the grandparents at home. The roads are steep and the staircase could prove difficult for older folks. But it is a wonderful place for young people - swimming, snorkeling, hiking, surfing and exploring. The owners are only a phone call away and they are helpful and accommodating. The care-takers are close by and responsive to any need that might arise. So come to KihiKihi Hale and enjoy all that the west side of the Big Island has to offer!

lovely getaway

Lovely, clean home with gorgeous ocean views. The black sand beach is beautiful but has a powerful riptide. A beautiful getaway for vacationers who want to get away from it all.

Family Summer Trip

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 4 stayed at this great house in Kona Paradise for 11 days and is was super comfortable and affordable. For sure a great value for a family vacation. The house was comfortable and had enough room for my two young boys - nicely equipt and nice private neighborhood. We have been to the Big Island a few times and this is the farthest South we've stayed. It is a bit far from stores and restaurants (about a 20 minute drive into downtown Captain Cook) but overall it didn't bother us much. We plan to drive a lot when on the Big Island. The best part of the house was the Lani. GREAT sunsets and we ate all our meals out there. Overall, nice place to stay and a super value.

Frequent visitor

This was our 9th time using VRBO on the Big Island. Kihi Kihi Hale was a very nice surprise the house had everything we needed, it was out of the way, but not too far. Very private location. The beach was only 3 blocks and was great for swimming and snorkeling. Plenty of walking trails in the area. We were there at a great time, whales, dolphin and great sunsets visible right off the Lani, binoculars provided as well as beach gear. As this was our fifth visit in two years we are very aware of life on the island, we had stayed on the larva fields and at south point all of our vacations have had their unique differences mainly because of the houses we stayed in. Ocean front in Milolii, was a great location however a very remote location with a need to rough it, but a great week. Ocean view rancheros a house on the lava field, very very quiet and it had a pool, too cold even for us in December, a little too far. But a great vacation. We stayed twice in Puna very different than the Kona side. Kihi Kihi Hale is without exception the best accommodation, the best beds we have encountered. Life on the island has its challenges Kihi Kihi has been the most comfortable to date. Tom & Beatriz

Kihi Kihi Hale is a private retreat in Captain Cook, 35 miles south of Kona Airport. An easy drive on highways 19 & 11 along the dramatic coastline takes you past Kailua-Kona, to history rich Keauhou, Kealakekua, Captain Cook, and Honaunau, through the Big Island’s fertile agricultural region, where coffee grows alongside macadamia, cacao, vanilla beans, avocado, and an endless feast of tree ripened fruit. Great beach for snorkeling, diving, kayaking, paddle boarding. Kings trail for hiking.

Beautiful sunsets from the lanai.
