HISTORICAL COTTAGE, ONCE OWNED BY JOHN STEINBECK, AVAILABLE FOR RENT!

Pacific Grove House Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 5

‘I bought a small house and garden in Pacific Grove...' writes John Steinbeck in April 1941 in a letter addressed to a friend (from John Steinbeck: A Life in letters). This property was owned by him in the early 1940's,

This darling home, known as The Steinbeck Cottage, has a beautiful living room with a tent cathedral ceiling. It's focal point is the fireplace, richly adorned with carvings of birds and flowers. It has a queen sleeper sofa, a love seat, two reading chairs and a flat screen TV. There is a large bedroom, accommodating a queen bed, a sitting area with a twin sleeper sofa, flat screen TV and a cozy electric fireplace. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to enjoy cooking and dining in. The dining room has a farm table and is surrounded by floor to ceiling picture windows, overlooking the garden and offering peaks of the bay. The beautiful bathroom features white subway tiles in the shower and blue Moroccan lantern tiles on the floor. The front yard offers an outdoor sitting area with a fire pit for conversation and warmth. The cottage has cable TV and wireless internet and is approximately 900 square feet.

It is original architecture from 1913 and has short doorways throughout the cottage. Taller guests will need to mind their heads when passing through the rooms.

Downtown Pacific Grove, which is home to countless restaurants, shops, and the famous Lover's Point, is a short half mile away. Just steps outside the door of the cottage is a walking path that leads straight down the hill to The Monterey Bay Aquarium, also a mere half mile away. Included in your stay are two complimentary Monterey Bay Aquarium passes that can be used any and every day of your visit.

It is one of three cottages on the property. For larger groups, The Steinbeck Cottage can be rented with The Writer's Studio and/or The Traveler's Cottage on the same property.

We have lived in California our whole lives and have always loved the coast. It has been a dream of ours to own a little beach house someday. That dream became a reality in 2102 when we were fortunate enough to find this treasure of a property in the beautiful small beach town of Pacific Grove.

Kevin Delaney purchased this house in 2012

This property is rich in character and history. The cottage on the property has a feel of days gone by, with thoughtful architectural touches and details that speak to the period. The tranquil garden brings about a sense of peace, and one can't help but feel relaxed in its presence. When you come away to the cottage, we hope you are immersed in its serenity and charm.

The historical aspect of the property was a huge draw for us as well. The main house on the property is 100 years old this year. We love that it was once owned by John Steinbeck, and often imagine him walking around this property, being inspired by its beauty and serenity. When he was away from this home, staying in New York, he wrote to his friend who was living here at the time, 'It is a pleasant little house, and we miss it...You'll find you get a lot of thinking done in that house.' (from John Steinbeck, a life in letters)

EXCELLENT STAY, GREAT HOST, HIGHLY RECCOMMEND

  • 5 of 5
The cottage was wonderful. We enjoyed the quaint ambiance, and we enjoyed reading all the literature on John Steinbeck our host had there. It really enhanced the experiences. Amy was wonderful to work with, and we will definitely return some day.

CHARMING COTTAGE!

  • 5 of 5
After my book group's participating in the 75th anniversary read of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, we knew we had to stay here! Best decision ever! Thanks Amy for the warm greeting upon our arrival and helping us settle in. The restoration of this special place is a perfect combination of charm and comfort. The three of us agreed there was nothing we would have changed. So many comfy corners to curl up in! We appreciated the wifi which enabled us to Skype with the rest of the book group members meeting at home. And it's location was central to many of our favorite local places--we put the aquarium passes to use and enjoyed several local restaurants. Sipping wine around the fire pit on our last night there was so peaceful and relaxing. I know that I will return to this little slice of PG heaven.

COZY COTTAGE

  • 5 of 5
WOW, what a great way to start the new year!!! We had such a wonderful weekend in the Steinbeck Cottage. Amy was the perfect hostess. Her sense of style and attention to detail is amazing. This cozy cottage has so many cute sitting areas and a bright cheerful kitchen. We enjoyed walking into town, sitting by the fire and admiring the garden. It is walking distance to both Pacific Grove and Monterey with a variety of quaint restaurants to choose from. Thank you for a memorable weekend, we can't wait until our next visit!

COZY AND ROMANTIC!!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed at this beautiful historical cottage for our 20th anniversary. We loved it! It was absolutely perfect! Its warm atmosphere and gorgeous decor made us want to stay inside all day by the fire. There is a reading nook and beautiful original windows through which you can look out and see the garden. It has just the right size kitchen with all the amenities needed and a laundry room. There is even a good sized dining table so you could have your family stay or invite other couples to join you and host dinner! The bedroom is very romantic with rich velvet curtains and a small sofa next to the bed. The owner thought of everything, because there is a small electric fireplace and a TV in there too and apparently the love seat opens up into another bed. The whole cottage feels spacious yet very cozy at the same time. We loved the historical aspect of it as well. Steinbeck's books are displayed tastefully on the shelves and it is obvious the owner took care to preserve and restore the original architecture. The fireplace is stunning. Pacific Grove is a wonderful place to spend the weekend as well. There are great shops and restaurants (we went to Taste Bistro, we loved it too!). The Monterey Bay Aquarium is right down the hill. You can walk there and to Cannery Row. We are definitely going back!! I highly recommend it!!

THE PERFECT PLACE TO GATHER WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY

  • 5 of 5
We rented the cottages to spend the holiday season with friends and family and everything was just about right. The kitchen is staffed with everything we needed to cook superb meals. The atmosphere is cosy and Amy has made the place so warm and nicely furnished that you feel like home ... only better. We highly recommend the Cottages.
