Overview

Pacific Grove House Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 5

‘I bought a small house and garden in Pacific Grove...' writes John Steinbeck in April 1941 in a letter addressed to a friend (from John Steinbeck: A Life in letters). This property was owned by him in the early 1940's,

This darling home, known as The Steinbeck Cottage, has a beautiful living room with a tent cathedral ceiling. It's focal point is the fireplace, richly adorned with carvings of birds and flowers. It has a queen sleeper sofa, a love seat, two reading chairs and a flat screen TV. There is a large bedroom, accommodating a queen bed, a sitting area with a twin sleeper sofa, flat screen TV and a cozy electric fireplace. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to enjoy cooking and dining in. The dining room has a farm table and is surrounded by floor to ceiling picture windows, overlooking the garden and offering peaks of the bay. The beautiful bathroom features white subway tiles in the shower and blue Moroccan lantern tiles on the floor. The front yard offers an outdoor sitting area with a fire pit for conversation and warmth. The cottage has cable TV and wireless internet and is approximately 900 square feet.

It is original architecture from 1913 and has short doorways throughout the cottage. Taller guests will need to mind their heads when passing through the rooms.

Downtown Pacific Grove, which is home to countless restaurants, shops, and the famous Lover's Point, is a short half mile away. Just steps outside the door of the cottage is a walking path that leads straight down the hill to The Monterey Bay Aquarium, also a mere half mile away.

It is one of three cottages on the property. For larger groups, The Steinbeck Cottage can be rented with The Writer's Studio and/or The Traveler's Cottage on the same property.

About Kevin Delaney

I have lived in California for most of my life and have always loved the coast. It has been a dream of mine to own a little beach house someday. That dream became a reality in 2102 when I was fortunate enough to find this treasure of a property in the beautiful small beach town of Pacific Grove.

Kevin Delaney purchased this house in 2012

Why Kevin Delaney chose Pacific Grove

This property is rich in character and history. The cottages on the property have a feel of days gone by, with thoughtful architectural touches and details that speak to the period. The tranquil garden brings about a sense of peace, and one can't help but feel relaxed in its presence. When you come away to the cottage, I hope that you are immersed in its serenity and charm.

What makes this house unique

The historical aspect of the property was a huge draw for me as well. The cottages on the property are about 100 years old. I love that it was once owned by John Steinbeck, and often imagine him walking around this property, being inspired by its beauty and serenity. I am a huge Steinbeck fan!

When he was away from this home, staying in New York, he wrote to his friend who was living here at the time, 'It is a pleasant little house, and we miss it...You'll find you get a lot of thinking done in that house.' (from John Steinbeck, A Life in Letters).

Absolute Perfection!!!

  • 5 of 5
I came to Monterey with my wife and daughter to visit my son and we fell in love with the cottage. We thought about hotels but wanted to be able to make our son feel like we were at home and we absolutely made the right choice. Waking up in the morning and enjoying a cup of coffee by the fireplace was great. We were very impressed at the attention to detail in every aspect of the cottage. Everything we could need was at our fingertips. The fire pit at night was enjoyable. My family would have loved to stay much longer but we will surely be back.
The owner made sure everything was taken care of and even had a nice bottle of wine and welcome note for us at check-in.
GREAT JOB+++

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5
We had a really wonderful stay in this beautiful and historic cottage which has been so beautifully and sensitively renovated. All the modern comforts are seamlessly incorporated - it's really impressive. Clean, comfortable and very close to all the action but far enough away that you get some peace and quiet. Recommend to anyone and everyone.

Weekend with 4 adults and 2 kids

  • 5 of 5
Excellent place to stay in Monterey. Within walking distance to the aquarium. Not too far for kids 7 and 4 to walk. Full kitchen was great. Much better than staying in two hotel rooms. Kids slept with parents on the roll out couches.

A Unique Experience in Pacific Grove

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our 6 nights in the Steinbeck Cottage. It is not the place to go if you are looking for a modern, hi-tech place to stay, but this little cottage is a destination in itself. The decor is eclectic and comfortable. The quirky design of the house adds to its charm. In fact, the ambience is so wonderful that we spent more time in the cottage than out. There are comfortable sofas and chairs to curl up with a book in. And lots of TV stations should you want to watch.

The laundry facilities are up to date, as is the bathroom. The kitchen appliances worked well, although the shallow sink took some getting used to.

We would definitely return.

Darling Cottage

  • 5 of 5
I stayed here with my family for a weekend in Monterey and as soon as I stepped inside I fell in love with it's unique charm and rich history. It was a quaint little cottage enjoyed by both my husband and I as well as our two children. The decorative touches you have added were a pleasure to appreciate. Loved all the detail! We enjoyed walking the town of Pacific Grove, Cannery Row, and of course, the Monterey Bay Aquarium (we appreciated the 2 free passes). We look forward to coming back again someday! Thank you again ;-)

Excellent stay, great host, highly reccommend

The cottage was wonderful. We enjoyed the quaint ambiance, and we enjoyed reading all the literature on John Steinbeck our host had there. It really enhanced the experiences. Amy was wonderful to work with, and we will definitely return some day.
