'I bought a small house and garden in Pacific Grove...' (John Steinbeck: A Life in Letters). John Steinbeck wrote these words to a friend about this charming house he called home in the 1940s.
This cottage has a unique and rich literary history, having belonged to John Steinbeck in the early 1940's. It has been renovated to pay homage to the period and history of the property.
This darling home, known as The Steinbeck Cottage, has a beautiful living room with a tent cathedral ceiling. It's focal point is the fireplace, richly adorned with carvings of birds and flowers.

Pacific Grove has been called “Butterfly Town U.S.A.,” “The Most Romantic City in the U.S.,” “A Dreamy California Destination, ” as well as an idyllic place to get married, to honeymoon or to just hang out. Some of it is self-proclaimed, some the acclaim of people who have actually visited Pacific Grove.
You will find Pacific Grove on the very tip of the scenic, tree-shrouded Monterey Peninsula with a rocky coastline and an ambiance of charm, grace and beauty.
Founded in the 1870s as a Methodist summer retreat, Pacific Grove still bears the look and feel of yesteryear. As you stroll the residential streets admiring the charm of home after home, you will notice little plaques on many of the homes that bear the name of the original owner and the year in which it was built. To qualify for a plaque from the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, a structure must look like it did when it was originally built.
Among its visitors are brightly colored orange-and-black Monarch butterflies, who overwinter in Pacific Grove after traveling up to 2,000 miles, arriving by the thousands starting in October, peaking around Christmas and departing by March.
Besides its scenic beauty and idyllic neighborhoods, Pacific Grove offers an eclectic downtown experience, with small boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, antique stores and more. Other vibrant shopping areas are along Central Avenue at the entrance to Pacific Grove from Cannery Row and at the top of Forest Avenue on Forest Hill.
The Steinbeck Cottage is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. It is located a half mile from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, as well as downtown Pacific Grove. Lover's Point beach is just one mile away and downtown Monterey is two miles away.
There are many fantastic restaurants, activities and shops in the area.
Other Things to Note
There is a two-night minimum stay requirement for all bookings. There is a firm no smoking and no pet policy.
I have lived in California for most of my life and have always loved the coast. It has been a dream of mine to own a little beach house someday. That dream became a reality in 2012 when I was fortunate enough to find this treasure of a property in the beautiful small beach town of Pacific Grove.

This property is rich in character and history. The cottages on the property have a feel of days gone by, with thoughtful architectural touches and details that speak to the period. The tranquil garden brings about a sense of peace, and one can't help but feel relaxed in its presence. When you come away to the cottage, I hope that you are immersed in its serenity and charm.
The historical aspect of the property was a huge draw for me as well. The cottages on the property are about 100 years old. I love that it was once owned by John Steinbeck, and often imagine him walking around this property, being inspired by its beauty and serenity. I am a huge Steinbeck fan!
When he was away from this home, staying in New York, he wrote to his friend who was living here at the time, 'It is a pleasant little house, and we miss it...You'll find you get a lot of thinking done in that house.' (from John Steinbeck, A Life in Letters).
I loved the cottage! It is full of alcoves and nooks and crannies. The decorating is delightful. The bed was very comfortable, and all amenities were taken care of. Of course, it is in a wonderful location, so we could enjoy the area and then have this delightful cottage to come home to...much better than staying in a motel. This was 3 women friends, and it worked well for us. The property manager provided outstanding service. He always responded immediately to email questions, initiated helpful and supportive information and was truly there for us.
We loved the cottage! It is pretty large for one bedroom. Everything is clean and beautiful. All antique decorations, small little things around the house might as well belong in the early 1900. House is cozy, comfortable and decorated with good, even professional taste. We loved it. We will be back for sure.
We were looking for a private place to spend a quiet Christmas, and this filled the bill perfectly. As fans of early 20th century architecture, we felt very much at home here. The old features of the cottage were married seamlessly with modern countertops and appliances. It was equipped with everything we needed for our stay. Someone did a fantastic job of decorating the cottage.
I came to Monterey with my wife and daughter to visit my son and we fell in love with the cottage. We thought about hotels but wanted to be able to make our son feel like we were at home and we absolutely made the right choice. Waking up in the morning and enjoying a cup of coffee by the fireplace was great. We were very impressed at the attention to detail in every aspect of the cottage. Everything we could need was at our fingertips. The fire pit at night was enjoyable. My family would have loved to stay much longer but we will surely be back.
The owner made sure everything was taken care of and even had a nice bottle of wine and welcome note for us at check-in.
We had a really wonderful stay in this beautiful and historic cottage which has been so beautifully and sensitively renovated. All the modern comforts are seamlessly incorporated - it's really impressive. Clean, comfortable and very close to all the action but far enough away that you get some peace and quiet. Recommend to anyone and everyone.
Excellent place to stay in Monterey. Within walking distance to the aquarium. Not too far for kids 7 and 4 to walk. Full kitchen was great. Much better than staying in two hotel rooms. Kids slept with parents on the roll out couches.
