About Scott and Mary Alice

We started coming to the Island over 6 years ago and with each visit fell more and more in-love with it.

Scott and Mary Alice purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Scott and Mary Alice chose Sidney

Mary Alice had a strong visceral reaction to the Lochside ocean walkway and said ' This is it !!!' So, here we are.

The Lochside beach walkway is one of the longest, private and most beautiful stretches of oceanfront on the Island.

What makes this apartment unique

Ever been crabbing? Sidney and Sidney Pier (500 meters away ) is one of the best places to catch large red rock crabs. There are Dungeness crabs too. Just lower your crab trap off the pier, tie it off and come back in a couple of hours. Other than crabbing, the fishing in Sidney is quite decent ... you may be able to catch some good-sized soles right from the pier.

Great location. Very Clean, Quiet, and Beautiful - Superb Accomodation

We had the best time. The Hosts were lovely. The Suite was very well appointed and very comfortable. I loved walking along Lochside and the Seaway everyday. There was lots to do in Sidney and we took off to Victoria when we wanted more but were happy to come back to stay where we did. Thanks !

My wife and I stayed here for 9 nights in September 2014. The owner was not present when we arrived but had told us his housekeeper would let us in. She did not come until the next day and then only because we called her. Luckily there was a lock box for us to find a key to let ourselves in. We could not get the DVD to work --- and nor could the housekeeper when she did show up the next day.

Yes, the aircraft are noisey. So that limits the value to the unit, especially for families with young children. But we got used to the aircraft after about 4 days.

Unfortunately there are also maintenance issues, specifically:

1. The hedge along the pathway from the street to the apartment is badly overgrown. This means it is challenging to wheel a suitcase along the pathway.

2. The door lock is temperamental; it needs "tickling" to work.

3. The patio which looks so inviting in the VRBO pictures is not weeded or swept.

4. We cannot report on the use of the hot tub since there was no one to tell us how to make it work. Nor were there written instructions.

5. There is no latch on the sliding door to the patio; this means a bar is needed to secure it shut.

The owner expected 100% full payment in advance. Luckily (since we may not have been able to get inside) we refused. Instead we paid the housekeeper in cash (and got a receipt) when she eventually showed up.

However, on a positive note, the kitchen was well stocked, the living room and bathroom clean, and the bed comfortable.

Owner's Response: We're pleased that the Guest felt the beds were comfortable, the suite clean and the kitchen well-appointed, etc. After all, this is the heart of what we are providing and at affordable rates. We would urge and advise anyone browsing the reviews to look through the other reviews to see that this review is an "outlier" and contains false and misleading comments. As we make no attempt to control what people post, we are frequently really pleased about their reviews and have implemented their good suggestions. However, this review is not fair or accurate. Please feel free to call us or eMail us if you have any questions or concerns. We pride ourselves on giving our Guests an experience above and beyond their expectations, however, we realize that despite our best and most diligent efforts we cannot please everyone. Long before this Guest's arrival, we advised them that we would be out of the country attending my son's wedding in Florida. We sent the Guest the Lockbox code for the Suite so they were NEVER in any jeopardy of not being admitted. Further, we arranged for our Housekeeper to meet the guest and gave them her phone number in advance to call upon their arrival. It's unfortunate that 1) the guest was late ( this occurs frequently and is why we have a lockbox on the door ) and 2) the Guest didn't call her until the next day. 100% of VRBO's require full payment in advance and most 60 days prior. We went out of our way to accommodate this Guest to pay upon arrival. Our beautiful garden is maintained monthly by a professional horticulturist. Occasionally, a few bits of grass grow in between the paver patio stones in the interim as our climate is very lush. We take pride in our Garden which is one of the finest of any unit we are aware of. Our hedge, which seemed overgrown to the Guest, provides protection and privacy as well as a 40-48" clear path ( bigger than any doorway), and is maintained semi-annually. More importantly, every other guest ( including wheel-chaired and elderly ) have been able to wheel their luggage without any problem, as well as operate a simple TV/DVD without instruction. We also want to note that the Guest made no attempt to contact the owner ( we are ALWAYS available via phone ) to answer any of these simple questions. Finally, there were no hot tub instructions as the Guest did not opt for using the hot tub for which there is a fee. However, had they opted for the hot tub, it is operated by a simple "on-off" switch

Stay SIdney.

The suite was clean and comfortable. Sleeping six would may be difficult as the third bed is hide a bed style. The beds were comfortable. The backyard provided privacy and access to a hot tub, bbq and firepit. The owners were extremely helpful and pleasant. We would highly recommend staying there and we are planning on staying there again. Only criticism was the planes are sometimes loud. Overall a great stay.

Owner's Response: We're pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We've learned to count to 10 when the big jets takeoff from the island ... of, course it depends on which runway they use as to whether we hear them at all. There's only a few of them per day ... on the other hand we do like our 10 minute proximity to the airport. Very easy to get here and back to the mainland. I was really pleased that you got to use the crab trap and caught some nice crabs. You have a nice family. Cheers, Scott and Mary Alice

Great get away home for a young family/ a Mom's review

This was a wonderful vacation property for our family. Location was exactly as described- easy walk into town or to the sea walk. A highlight were the two beautiful playgrounds within walking distance. The ferry terminal is directly across the street but we did not hear any noise from traffic and two days we were able to go across and watch the ferry arrive (exciting for kids). Easy drive to Butterfly Gardens, Victoria, Beach Parks and other island attractions make this a great location if you have a vehicle. Parking is easy and convenient. The apartment was very clean and looked like the photos. The microwave had been neglected by the cleaners / we bought a microwave cover and left in in the unit for future renters. There is no phone in the unit so be prepared to use your cellphone. Both bedrooms were a good size and we were able to put a playpen in one of the rooms so our two children shared one room. The bedding was very nice and new. The two beds are not the same firmness. The back bedroom bed is extremely soft. Our children loved it. I have back issues and it would have been awful for me, luckily the front bedroom has a firmer mattress and was very comfortable. We had two issues because we were travelling with our two small children. 1) The blinds are not blackout so be prepared for morning light. 2)The airplanes coming into Victoria airport go directly over and are notably loud. It took two days for our little girls to get use to it and not come running to us. However, they also enjoyed watching the airplanes at the park. We solved our issues by covering the bedroom window with paper and ran the small fan in their room for white noise and the last days of our vacation they slept well and didn't wake up to airplane noise or the early morning sun. As a mother I always appreciate reading reviews from other moms and that is the only reason I mention these items. On the flipside, this was by far our favorite vacation rental property we have stayed at. The convenience to everything, especially the Aquarium (went everyday), sea walk, the pier, parks and Starbucks made this our ideal location. We loved no stairs to navigate with the kids, the kitchen is well equipped and laundry is a bonus, large courtyard was perfect and the little hottub was fun for the kids (a bit small for adults). Lastly, Scott was wonderful to work with, he was away so we can't comment on noise from above? He let my husband use the crab trap which was so much fun!! Thanks Scott!

Owner's Response: We so appreciate your feedback. I'm looking at adding a phone to the Suite as that has come up a couple of times now. I've hesitated so far since everybody seems to be carrying multiple cell phones and I wasn't sure that it added any value but it's a good suggestion. We've gone back and forth on how firm and soft each bed should be so we have one firm and comfortable and one soft and comfortable. We'll consider this topic again as well as we like your idea about adding some blackout curtains to the bedrooms as it will soon be sunny at 5am and not dark till close to 10pm. Great idea ! We're so happy that you got great use out of the Suite. Your stories of your kids and their first crab adventures warmed my heart and brought a big smile to my face. We're just finishing the updates to the Patio garden and it is so beautiful. I need to put up a few of the new photos.
