Hale Umeke was well stocked and very private. The view was one the best we have experienced . Everything was well maintained and clean. The kitchen was roomy and open to both the ocean and the rest of the family. doubleThe shower and sunken tub were to die for.If we are ever on the big island again this is where we will stay. Walk out the driveway and left to the. End of the road for yet another beautiful view.
The house was more than we could have expected. Sitting on the lanai was a vacation all by itself. We saw several whales and dolphins from its wonderful view. Don't forget to walk to the end of the road for wonderful sunrises and just to climb on the lave and take in its natural beauty. It's a easy drive to Volcanoes National Park and we would suggest taking in the observatory at the museum early morning (we arrived at 5 am). You can see an incredible view of the glow of the active lava lake and even hear it churning and bubbling. Great photo opportunity with the sunrise as a backdrop. We loved the house with its rubber floors and lava shower. Also loved the full size washer and dryer. A couple suggestions may be to have some snorkel gear available, and maybe a regular queen bed in the second bedroom to replace the futon. We would love to come back with our daughter and her husband but the futon may not work well for an adult couple. It's our third trip to Hawaii and this was by far our favorite house. Andy was a dream to work with. Thank you so much for sharing your home!
spent our 30th anniversary there and LOVED the ocean view, sound and smell. slept outside on the chaise lounge chairs more than in the house to enjoy the breeze, rain and closeness to nature. the lanai was AWESOME! spent many hours sitting on the cliffs watching the turtles and the locals collecting seafood.
saw the entire island (main roads with some jeep ones for fun) easily in the week we were there. snorkeled until we were wrinkled! glad to be there before the Pahoa lava issue. was a great vacation for 2 sun baked idaho folks. wonderful house...wackiest kitchen though. kept forgetting the split sink and made a mess more than once swinging the faucet! 1st world problems eh?!
hoping to return...a couple old beater bikes would be a wonderful addition.
My husband, two boys and I spent nearly a week at Hale Umeke. We were very excited about the home, given the rave reviews...and it did not disappoint! The home is beautifully designed and crafted, very clean, and extremely comfortable. We enjoyed listening to the crashing waves, walking on the lava, spotting whales, and watching green sea turtles ride the waves. We also enjoyed cooking meals in the gorgeous and well-stocked kitchen, and playing charades in the living room. Drinking coffee on the lanai in the mornings was also a highlight. The home is also conveniently located to Volcanoes National Park, Tropical Botanical Gardens, the Mauna Kea Observatory, zip-lining, the cute town of Pahoa (which is where the lava flow is currently happening), tidal pools, Hilo, and much more. Andy is great to work with...he always responded promptly to my emails and phone calls. Thank you, Andy!
My husband, college-age son and I just returned from a stay at Hale Umeke. I cannot say enough positive things about this rental property. As a frequent VRBO renter, I have to say this is likely the best home to date. I echo other reviewers when they say the house and the lanai are better than the photos; so well situated on the lot that you can forget there are neighbors. We were thrilled to experience whales breaching mornings and evenings right in front of the property -- so close you could hear the slap on the water! House is thoughtfully appointed and *clean*, in a quiet area, but close enough to anything you might want to do on the Hilo side of the island, including Volcano National Park. Ideal property for three people; highly recommended for older couples looking for no steps, easy access showers, etc. The owner, Andy, is great to deal with -- highly responsive, pleasant. Would recommend this home to anyone looking for quiet comfort. Would love to return some day...
We had high expectations, each of them exceeded. Owner could not have been more responsive and considerate. Home presents well on the website, it presents far better in person.
If you need to be around a lot of people and amenities then this is not the place for you. If you want to enjoy breathtaking sunrises AND sunsets, you have found your place. Well located, allowing you to explore the East side of the island, it does require an adventurous spirit.
If you can get in here before the owner moves in full time, we would highly encourage it!
Please check out the guide located in the great room that includes places to see, restaurants in Pahoa, current maps, and a map to the Kona side of the island. There are great hiking opportunities on the Hilo side where you can get close to the 2,000 foot waterfalls. Fun ocean activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing. Enjoy a helicopter tour of the volcanoes, waterfalls and the Waipio Valley. Lots of shopping opportunities in historic Hilo.
