About Bill Thom

Book with someone you can trust! I am a Michigan native and fell in love with the charm & natural beauty of 'UpNorth' many years ago. I have lived in Texas since 1984, and spent summers in Charlevoix with my family. Now my four children are grown and spread across the country from Austin to Seattle. It's your turn to experience the wonder of Half House!

Bill Thom purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Bill Thom chose Charlevoix

I have owned a home in Charlevoix for over twenty years. I purchased Half House in 2001 and quite frankly, I couldn't believe it was for sale! It is perfectly located across from the beach and just two blocks to downtown.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the quirky eccentricity of this fairytale home. It has so much history & character; thoroughly enchanting! I am pleased to now be able to share it with you.

The house was really decorated cute inside. Even though it is small, there was plenty of room for a girls getaway for four adults. The beach was so close and you could even see the water through the trees. Everything was in walking distance which made it perfect.

Very unique and relaxing vacation!

  • 5 of 5
This being my husband & I's first real vacation since our Honeymoon over 12 years ago, we were very excited for the Half/Mushroom House! Little did I know when I was googling "vacation rentals on Lake Michigan" that we would come across something this unique and outstanding, especially for the price! When we arrived, it didn't disappoint! We were unprepared for such a historical & popular property! All week, starting from the day we arrived until the day we left, people driving/walking/biking by would stop to take pictures ALL day long, we even gave a few tours to a few families to their curiosity (they even took down your phone number for future reservations Mr. Bill :)! When we explored the city & found out about Earl Young & all that he did around town, we then understood what was going on (LOL). I mean, every brochure or flyer we picked up had a picture of this house either in it or on the cover, even Castle Farms had a book with this house on the very front cover of it! I couldn't have asked for better communication from the owner, who was very nice & prompt to return emails. The location was perfect for public Lake Michigan access, even though it was too cold to swim, we had a good time catching the sunsets & our [almost] 3 year old son had fun playing on the swings & slide on the beach. It's perfect walking distance to downtown & the people are SO friendly! The ONLY thing that was disappointing, though I won't hold it against anyone, is the construction on the house directly next door. My husband is in construction & we were a little disturbed to the 7:30AM-7:00PM weekday commotion that he was trying to get away from at home. Our biggest looking forward to was the quietness & sleeping in that regular vacations consist of. BUT, I will say, it started on Monday and went on to Tuesday but as of that Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, the crew must have either had an early start to a long labor day weekend or they were waiting for inspection because nobody showed up after that, which we were VERY thankful for! Other than that, we loved it & are hoping to be able to plan & afford longer stays in the future & even bring our dog with us next time. Now that we have started our own family, I was about 11-12 weeks pregnant during our stay along with having a [3] year old as well, we are hoping to be able to start an every year (or every other year at least) vacation tradition. Charlevoix is a great place to do it & it's only 4 hours away from home! Thank you!

Owner's Response: Congratulations on the new baby! It looks like the next booking will be for a family of four! And thank you for showing off the house to visitors. It is such a treasure; everyone wants to take pictures & peek inside!

Does a Hobbit Live Here?

  • 5 of 5
This was the second one week stay in Charlevoix for my wife and I. The first was in a condo hotel. The Half-House was far more enjoyable. It couldn't be more convenient to downtown, the Lake Michigan beach, and access to the many NW Michigan things to do. The regular flow of "Mushroom Houses" picture takers needed some getting used to...like being on a tour route, but if you know some facts about the Earl Young houses, it's fun to talk to folks about them. The Young house next door is being renovated (occasionally early starts by the workers), but it will soon be done--and beautiful--so it's a minor distraction. All in all, a fine week.

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay. Half house was ideal, easy walk to the beach and town. No need to drive anywhere. the house was clean and comfortable with many amenities, i have bad back and the mattress was great, better than most places. the house provided a wonderful opportunity to interact with others, as they would stop on their walk to talk. Charlevoix is very pet friendly. great shopping and restaurants.

Better than we thought!

We had a great time in your charming half/hobbit house. Plenty of space to spread out despite being small. We love that you are dog friendly, as our dogs are our family. The proximity to town is excellent. We will be back!

Notes:
Not recommended for more than four adult guests. The second bedroom located upstairs is petite, and better suited for two children or single adults. There are two additional sofa/daybeds in the living room, however they ARE in the living room! Perfect for stretching out and reading or gazing at a blazing fire.
