About Bill Thom

Book with someone you can trust! I am a Michigan native and fell in love with the charm & natural beauty of 'UpNorth' many years ago. I have lived in Texas since 1984, and spent summers in Charlevoix with my family. Now my four children are grown and spread across the country from Austin to Seattle. It's your turn to experience the wonder of Half House!

Bill Thom purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Bill Thom chose Charlevoix

I have owned a home in Charlevoix for over twenty years. I purchased Half House in 2001 and quite frankly, I couldn't believe it was for sale! It is perfectly located across from the beach and just two blocks to downtown.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the quirky eccentricity of this fairytale home. It has so much history & character; thoroughly enchanting! I am pleased to now be able to share it with you.

Cozy Half House

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 4 day stay to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary! The house was perfect for two people and the amenities were very nice - especially the library card that we used at the local library a block and a half away! The wood fireplace was a big draw for us in the advertisement and the real thing was perfect. The house was conveniently located for nice long walks to a wide variety of scenery and shops/restaurants. We would recommend this place to anyone wanting a cozy retreat. Other reviews and the property description are accurate. Due to the cold winter here in Michigan, the main water line to the house was frozen and we didn't have running water when we arrived. The owner graciously provided other arrangements within an hour to stay at a comparable place within a few blocks that did have running water for our first night. Water was provided at the Half House by noon the following day and we stayed the remainder of our time enjoying the house.

gemütlichkeit

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful town, cozy dwelling. Well equipped, well decorated, and embodied "gemütlichkeit." Small but choice library.

We stayed over a major snowstorm and the birch firewood saved us. The radiant heat system was having a hard time keeping up with the subzero temperatures but the birch logs and handy firestarters kept us warm and cozy.

It's a different experience dwelling in a house designed thoughtfully for joy of living. It makes the usual house feel like a cubicle. Use the chance to interact, socialize, or just read a book. Don't bring all your electronics. My kids did, and the poltergeist in the fuzebox rebelled.

Highly recommended!

Winter Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We use VRBO for every vacation, so we've literally seen it all. This "half house" was cozy and quaint. The fireplace was a perfect way to end our lonew days outdoors. There is construction on a very large house next door. Workers were there early in the morning to late in the evening. Be prepared for the mushroom house tourists who drive up, get out of their vehicles, walk up to the house, and take pictures all day long. I didn't expect that, and guess it goes to show JUDY how cool and unique the house really is. We had a great time and would return again (after construction;))

We love being Up North!

  • 5 of 5

What a fun little place to stay in Charlevoix. So close to downtown and we loved being able to walk to town, restaurants, shopping and even the grocery store! Everything we needed for our stay was provided. We took extra pillows because we always worry about the quality of pillows and they were even great! Our 6'2" son had a little trouble navigating the short ceilings and doorways but even he enjoyed the stay. Thanks so much for letting us enjoy your little place on the lake!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review! I am 6'3", so I empathize with your son. Earl Young was reportedly only 5'4" tall, and designed his homes accordingly. I actually removed some interior doorway trim to provide extra clearance for those of us of lofty disposition.

Charming, village Earl Young house

  • 5 of 5

My husband, daughter and I loved the Hobbit House. The owner has clearly given a lot of thought to appointing this charming village historical cottage to enhance both its charm and coziness, while providing many practical features (lights for reading next to seating and beds-yay! - among many other features). We found the owner approachable and available for any questions and needs, before and during our lovely stay in Northern Michigan.

Notes:
The house will accommodate six in beds, however due to cozy quarters, I do not recommend more than four adults. The second bedroom located upstairs is petite with two twin beds, and better suited for two children or single adults. There is an additional queen sofabed in the living room, however it IS in the living room! Perfect for stretching out and reading or gazing at a blazing fire.
