Kyoto Apartment Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom With Living Room Setting Close To Downtown

I know, I know. You're coming to Kyoto and have been thinking about staying in a machiya, which is a great idea. But after a long day of walking around town, you're going to want to come back to a comfortable room well-suited for relaxing, reading, conversation, pleasure. If you're interested in a homely, cozy, utterly unique experience, you should definitely consider sleeping in The Moon Room.

Our apartment is located in Kyoto's Nakagyo-ku neighborhood (literal meaning is Downtown). Unlike other B&Bs and guesthouses near Kyoto Station or Higashiyama, Nakagyo is quite central when it comes to dining and entertainment (and I have prepared a homemade map with suggested gourmet destinations). Our space is just a five minute walk from Marutamachi Station, on the main north-south subway line (Karasuma), and about ten minutes from Karasuma-Oike, where the two subway lines intersect, thus marking the center of Kyoto.

Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace are just ten-minute strolls away, while Higashiyama and its wonderful temple complexes are less than an hour on foot (quicker by bus).

The neighborhood itself, though so close to Downtown and its dizzying attractions, is quiet and traditional and it is not unusual to see women in kimono or monks chanting. Many of the neighborhood's machiya houses specialize in old-time industries like printmaking, woodcutting, and tatami-producing, as well as stores selling tea, ivory, dolls, medicinal herbs, and Japan's oldest incense producer.

Nevertheless, The Moon Room is also a wonderful place to relax on a windy or lazy day, to contemplate, relax, or pleasure in the romance of living. Designed specifically by a local artist, there is nothing quite like our space in all of Kyoto. It is part of a first wave of what we hope is a designer's renaissance in this very old city.

About Sean Lotman

I'm a native of Los Angeles, who has been in Japan for about ten years, eight in Tokyo, two in Kyoto. After studying history at UC Santa Barbara, I've worked as a writer and photographer. My wife, a photographer as well, recently took over the family business, the oldest soba restaurant in Japan, in business since 1465.

Sean Lotman purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Sean Lotman chose Kyoto

The Moon Room is downstairs from our own apartment. We collaborated with a designer friend to give it a very unique aesthetic. We wanted the space to feel both romantic and homely and are very happy with how it turned out.

The immediate area is quiet but within five minutes the atmosphere becomes lively. As a photographer I'm prone to long walks and other days, particularly rich in blue sky sunlight, I'm partial to long bicycle rides around town, often ending up by the Kamo River.

What makes this apartment unique

I'm very lucky to live in Kyoto. It is one of those rare cities that combine both history and modernity (like Rome) and cosmopolitanism with nature (like San Francisco). Kyoto is not so busy as Osaka or Tokyo, but is just as rich culturally.

Excellent location for exploring Kyoto

  • 5 of 5
We were very happy that we chose to stay here. The location was great for getting around Kyoto and central enough to walk to many restaurants, train stations, etc. Sean was a great host and was helpful with giving recommendations of where to go in the area. The room was very comfortable. If we are lucky enough to go back to Kyoto we will definitely be staying here.

Patisseries and Chanting Pilgrims

  • 4 of 5
It would be hard to find a better location: a short walk to morning croissants as good as you would find in Paris, countless restaurants, tea shops, and tourist sites all at your doorstep.

Sean was an exceedingly helpful owner, especially when it came to making restaurant and taxi reservations for us. We’re quite familiar with Kyoto, but for people new to the area, his local knowledge is a real plus.

The Moon Room provided plenty of space; though the kitchenette is tiny. The wi-fi was outstanding. We found the one-way street a bit noisy with traffic at night, but we live in the country… so you can’t compare the city to that. However, we never see chanting pilgrims on our street in Santa Fe!

The accommodations were accurately reflected in the photos and description on the listing. It was clean, and easy to find with Sean’s directions, and close to the metro station.

We would recommend this property to anyone coming to Kyoto.

Very convenient, comfortable, relaxing

  • 5 of 5
We stayed in the Cocoon Room which is owned by the same host and in the same block of units. The location is so perfect, so convenient and the Room is such a relaxing escape from the travelling and sightseeing we had been doing. Our host Sean - a lifesaver! So helpful! We were 3 first time travellers aged 19 and Sean communicated via email and SMS with me and gave great directions and also sent me directions via SMS in Japanese to show the taxi driver! Initially I had not want to spend time at Kyoto however now I can say it is the place I enjoyed the most and want to return...and I will stay at one of Sean Rooms be it the Moon Room or the Cocoon Room either give that special experience -don't worry that it's not a traditional experience coz everything else in Kyoto is the traditional experience so I am happy to have an artz/modern experience at my accommodation. Now let me tell you about my host Sean - it is becoz of Sean that I started to relax on our holiday...and oh! great advice for a restaurant - I am now addicted to soba noodles! And if it weren't for Sean we would not have known we were in Kyoto during the only 5 days of the year that the Emperor's Palace was open to the public. Thank you Sean for a wonderful experience and for communicating with my mum back in Australia with all her concerns!!! I will be back.

Very spacious and clean and beautiful

  • 5 of 5
We are a family of 3 adult girls and stayed at Sean's place during the cherry blossom season. We expected his place to be a lot smaller because our accommodation in Osaka was very small. We were surprised (in a good way) that the place was bigger than expected. Sean provided an extra futton in the living room area. The sheets were very soft and comfortable. There are 3 heaters in the room, 1 dehumidifier, a small kitchen with coffee and water filter provided. The bathroom was beautiful, spacious with warm toilet seats, shampoo, soap and conditioner were provided.

Sean was very patient with our many changes in schedules, payment schemes, and even provided a map of the nearby places. His apartment is just around 8 minutes walk to Marutamachi station. The area is very nice with small restaurants and modern and old houses.

I have already recommended his place to my relatives.

Thanks Sean for a warm and enjoyable stay!

Really nice place.

  • 5 of 5
Ground floor unit on a quiet street. Looks from the outside that it could have been a hair salon before it got converted. It's surprisingly close to the subway and nishiki market AND on a really quiet street. There is some street noise however but being able to watch the children walking to school in their adorable outfits is priceless. I stayed her with my thirteen year old daughter and we had a fantastic stay. Sean provided a very helpful information pack not to mention excellent directions/instructions on how to find the place.
Now for the actual place. As a design build general contractor, I was really impressed. There was a lot of care and thought that went into this place. It feels absolutely new and modern in the best way. The finishes were interesting and it felt like one was staying at their architect's guest house. I highly highly recommend staying here and I would. It hesitate coming back.

wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I spent a week at this wonderful apartment. It is located in a quiet residential area, 5 mins walk to a subway station and imperial palace park. Our host Sean was very pleasant to deal with, he created a list of restaurants which he recommended and that list was spot on. This apartment is very spacious and clean. we will definitely stay there again for our next kyoto visit.
