We moved here from Colorado where I grew up and still love to this day. Went to college in Durango, another incredible place to live and enjoy the outdoors. I also worked for the airlines and travelled extensively throughout the world and enjoy meeting new people from around the world!
Sarah Mellaci purchased this house in 2005
I moved here after visiting and staying at a neighbors cottage in 2003. I simply fell in love with this area and knew I had to live here. We bought 6 acres and built this guesthouse first, last year we completed building our main house and decided to rent our guesthouse so more people including our friends and family could experience how incredible this area is.
What made us fall in love with this area is the incredible stars at night and full moons over the forest, it is simply amazing. The temperature in the daytime is ideal and at night you need a sweater a nice alternative after being hot at the beach or after exploring. Sunsets are beautiful as well and the peace and quiet of the area, all of this while being less than 10 minutes to multiple activities and stores! The privacy you have is extremely difficult to find and makes your visit truly unique!
We had a wonderful week long stay at Sarah's house. The house is even better than it appears in the photos. It is on a beautiful street in the mountains and feels remote and secluded while being just a short drive to beautiful beaches, supermarkets and all other amenities. The house is incredibly comfortable with everything you need and sarah could not have been more helpful.
We could not have had a more enjoyable experience on our Honeymoon than in Sara and Lou's cottage hide-away! Very gracious and helpful hosts, with an incredibly comfortable and cozy home in a secluded and wooded area. We are coming back again, and you will too! We stayed two weeks and wished we'd stayed longer.... Thanks Sara/Lou God Bless!
We absolutely loved the guesthouse--it was well-appointed with every appliance and accessory you may need, with plenty of space for three adults. The place was spotless and well-decorated; its central location to Kona sites was essential for us. My wife loved the lounge chair on the patio, and it was pure bliss to sit outside in the evenings and stargaze. Sara was a gracious host and gave us great suggestions to truly enjoy the island life. We plan to get back as soon as we can!
We stayed almost 2 weeks in Sara's Guesthouse and it was very comfortable for 3 adults. The property is located at an elevation that makes for cool, comfortable nights WITHOUT A/C, and no bugs- such a nice change. It is spotlessly clean and Sara has equipped it well (from first aid supplies to beach chairs). The garden is very private, with lovely plantings, and the nights were quiet and full of stars.
If like us, you would rather hear frogs than cars, trade the bustle of the hotel zone for Kaloko Drive. The location is VERY convenient- beaches, shopping and airport are all within 10 minutes' drive. It is a great central base camp for exploring the island: trips to Hilo, Volcano, Waimea, Kohala Coast are all within easy reach from here. Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation is just a 20 minute walk (uphill, mind you) from the driveway- definitely worth doing the tour of their organic coffee operation.
The cottage has everything you'd need to be comfortably away-from-it-all, yet still be connected (WiFi, TV, satellite service). Sara's warm and welcoming personality adds to the charm of this little gem. I highly recommend it and hope to return, next time for a longer stay!
It was a little tough landing in the dark of night and locating this beautiful secluded location. It was a perfect size for my wife and I to use as a home base. It is away from the crowds, incredible night sky and very comfortable. It is in an elevated area which allowed you great access to the entire island. Easy jump down to the heart of Kona as well as access to Waimea and Captain Cook. The hardest part you will have is keeping your eyes on the road as the views coming down from Koloko are gorgeous. I would highly recommend this for anyone who does not want to put up with the crowds of tourists in town.
WE absolutely loved our stay in this lovely house. It is exactly as the description and Sarah and her family are very welcoming.
The house is well equipped, clean and there is everything you need. We really appreciated the quietness and the fresh air in the evening. Loved hanging around in the garden in the evening star gazing.
So quiet but yet close to town...just thinking about it wants me coming back there right now..
Hopefully we ll be back next year..
Very comfortable house, very quiet and just a few minutes from the beaches and the town. An ideal location for exploring the West Coast. We had a great time there.
Our guesthouse is located on the side of Hualalai Mountain at 2800ft. The temperature averages 75 F and 23 C daily while dropping cooler in the evenings. This makes for a wonderful retreat after a long day down at the beach or sightseeing. Wild ginger blooms along the hillside along with many flowers. Kaloko hiking trail is less than .5 mile away on the same street! Mountain Thunder coffee is also at the end our road, you can go for a walk and get a tour and fresh cup of coffee.
