I am a preservation architect and my husband is a lawyer. We live full time in upstate New York. We have two grown children.
This house is a dream house to us. We had owned an adorable beach cottage just down the road from Arbory House for ten years after having fallen in love with Rockport and the south end of Rockport in particular.
We love the authentic yet unpretentious New England feeling of Cape Ann, its charming architecture, beautiful, friendly family beaches and unsurpassed views of the ocean. This house has all the charm of a 1907 vintage beach house, plenty of room for extended family to spread out and just simply the most exquisite and expansive view of the sea and thatcher Island.
Without a doubt, Arbory House is in one of the premier locations in Rockport. It is on a high ridge with 270 degree views of the ocean. The neighboring houses are classic lovely old rambling Shingle Style beach houses. Several have been in the same families for generations. Houses like these have been described as 'The Architecture of the American Summer' by architectural historian Vincent Scully.
Our house does truly represent all that is best about summer, it is relaxed but beautiful with a mix of family Antiques and new wicker and comfortable upholstered furniture. my great grandfather's nautical art work adorns the walls. It has all the mod cons but also a great feeling of the past. To sit with a drink on that porch with friends and family is one of the great joys.
