MEDIAEVAL TOWNHOUSE ON DINAN'S PRETTIEST STREET

Dinan House Rental Photos and Description

Large lounge, kitchen diner, four bedrooms, two ensuite, terraced patio garden

The House is situated on the cobbled Rue du Petit Fort which winds up from the port and marina to the gate in the mediaeval town walls and into rue Jerzual and then into the old town centre. The town has every shop you could need including traditional boucheries, patisseries etc., and a daily covered market. The huge weekly market is in Place du Guesclin, 10 minutes from the house, every Thursday. Restaurants and creperies are everywhere, with the closest 50 metres from the house.

The ground floor of the house has a very spacious sitting room with lounge seating for 8 and a log fire, free internet, TV and telephone. The sitting room connects with a fully equipped kitchen diner having a table which can seat 10

Upstairs on the first floor there are two double bedrooms, each with ensuite facilities and a further two bedrooms with their own bathroom on the second floor.

The terraced patio garden has a barbecue and garden seats for 8.

Easy and cheap Car Parking: Because Dinan is such an ancient and historic site, the town was not built with the motor car in mind. Recognising this, the city authorities have provided a profusion of free or low cost car parks within easy walking distance of all parts of the historic walled town. It is possible to park on the street in marked bays on Rue du Rocquet 100 metres from the house and another park at a similar distance in Rue Michel. We usually park in the underground car park at 'Centre Historique' which is 8 minutes walk away. This year we are providing renters with the benefit of a parking permit, free of charge, for this car park at Centre Historique (details of location in information at the house).

Guestbook comments from the owner
We have had a wonderful week in Dinan! Our home away from home has served us very well - comfortable, cozy and close to some of the most stunning historical places we've seen. This place makes a great home base that allowed us to walk to places in town and visit interesting places in town and visit interestinf places further afield. Dinan is charming and tranquil - as is Lehon just South. Mont St. Michel is spectacular! St. Malo incredibly interesting and important. Our boys (and us) loved fort la Latte. Ile de Brehat is beautiful. Combourg and Rennes interesting. By far the most meaningful journeys were North. We loved the architecture which is nearly beyond comprehension for our era.

Tricia (local manager) is lovely and available to help! Hope to return again.

LOVELY HOUSE, FULL OF CHARACTER

  • 5 of 5
A lovely house full of character and history. Very comfortable, clean and cosy and with every amenity we could want.

It's in a beautiful location too, half way up the ancient cobbled hill which makes the steep walk from the river to the town much easier.

The free parking permit is a great touch and came in very handy.

Thanks to the owners too; friendly, helpful and quick to respond from booking through to the end of the trip.

AN OUTSTANDING VACATION RENTAL FOR A LARGE FAMILY

  • 5 of 5
I can not say enough about how pleased my family and I were to stay in this wonderful old home in a medieval city, chocked full of history and fascinating walks along the castle walls. Nigel Gee, the owner, went out of his way to accommodate me. He promptly answered all my requests for info on the rental. He made an exception concerning the size of our family, which consisted of 5 adults and 4 teen aged grand children. Each family ended up with their own bed room and ensuite bath, in addition to the large living room and kitchen. and a delightful quiet garden patio where we sipped our morning coffee.
The house sits half way up the long, narrow, uphill, cobblestone street that rises from the river below upwards to the ancient portal gates of the walled city. Walks along the city walls surrounding the old section of the city became a nightly event. The house had all the modern conveniences that we needed to enjoy our week in Brittany, including free wi-fi that allowed us internet access and electronic games for the kids. I timed our visit so that the family could see the Tour de France race which I mistakenly thought would end in San Malo,. I was pleased to learn that the race actually passed directly through the center of Dinan on the 3rd day of our visit. We all had great curbside seats along the main street of the city near the tourist information center. It allowed us to see the hundreds of bikes as they flashed by us for 2 and 1/2 minutes after a long 2 hour wait. The wait was worth it.
The location of Dinan is an ideal location for a vacation in Brittany for first timers to the northern coast of France. We arrived in Dinan on a Saturday after spending a week in a rental house in the "multicultural" city of Saint Denis, just north of Paris. It was there where my family and grand kids had the opportunity to ride the crowded metro trains into and out of Paris, in hopes of seeing their first pick pocket attempt or a Gypsy scam. It only took 3 days before they saw their first, up close and personal, mugging and purse snatching of a young women in broad day light by 6 young thugs as we walked along one of the crowded restaurant lined streets of Saint Denis during the dinner hour. Needless to say, they were ecstatic to spend week in the friendly, and secure town of Dinan. Walking the quiet streets after a late dinner by the river was a nightly event for us.
We appreciated the bottle of local wine that greeted us in the kitchen upon our arrival. Thanks

A CHARACTERFUL HOUSE IN AN IDEAL LOCATION.

  • 5 of 5
I have just returned from a very enjoyable break in Dinan with five friends. Nigel was very helpful in answering any questions I had regarding the accommodation and in suggesting the best route to drive and places to visit and eat. Finding a comfortable house for six adults can be difficult but this property lived up to all our expectations. Having three bathrooms meant two couples had their own facilities whilst the top floor has a huge bathroom of its own. Having three double bedrooms meant we didnt have to toss a coin to see who got the childs room!! There was plenty of comfortable seating in the sitting room and we enjoyed sitting in front of the very efficient wood burner. We enjoy cooking on holiday and this property had all the facilities and gadgets we could need. Dinan is a beautiful city even in winter and half way up the Rue Du Petit Fort is an ideal location for both the town and the port. Parking just up the hill was easy to find in winter. You need to be a little bit fit to manage the hill and I advise not packing a huge suitcase as you need to negotiate a narrow winding staircase, otherwise this was an excellent base I can highly recommend for a group of friends or a family.

Owner's Response: I am grateful to Diana B for this helpful review. The point about the narrow staircase typical in this age of property is well made and I shall make a point of informing future guests. Normal airline-typical (15-20 kg) wheelie bags should not present a problem (we take them to the property ourselves) but very large suitcases might be a bit tricky.

GREAT BRITTANY TOWN-CENTRE HOLIDAY HOME

  • 5 of 5
We were a family of seven (two grandparents, two parents and three children of 3, 6 & 10, who stayed in the house for two weeks last August.
Excellent, comprehensive and accurate listing desription. A well appointed and very comfortable holiday home with convenient access to the facilities in the town and surrounding areas. Disadvantage of being located on a hilly, cobbled non-parking street in the listing was accurate, but did not affect us unduly.
The house is well-maintained and was clean on arrival.
Customer service before and during the let was impeccable. Owner was very communicative by e-mail and his agent available and responsive during our stay.
I would recommend this house, the town and the surrounding area to a friend or relative.
There is much to do in the house (DVD, books, games), the town (restaurants, parks, cycle hire, boat hire, canal walks) and the surrounding area (castles, beaches, theme parks ,St Malo, Mont St Michel).
We would happliy stay there again except that there are many other lovely places in France to stay on holiday.

OUTSTANDING BRITTANY RENTAL

  • 5 of 5
We have just returned from a delightful two week vacation in this Dinan Vacation home.
The house is perfectly situated to enjoy the delights of old Dinan, approximately halfway up narrow, cobblestoned rue du Petit-Fort, it is convenient for both the old town and the riverside marina with it's many varied restaurants.
We found the house to be comfortable and very well equipped with adequate space to handle six adults, which allowed us to take advantage of the excellent Thursday market in Dinan and the even more impressive Saturday market in Rennes and cook to our hearts content.
Dinan is a perfect location from which to explore the surrounding area. Dinard and St Malo are close by, we particularly enjoyed Cancale, the oyster capital of Brittany, Mont-St-Michel is an easy drive with the Overlord beaches of Normandy an easy day trip away.
We thank Home-Away vacations and Nigel Gee for an enjoyable and memorable vacation.

Dinan is situated on the banks of the Rance, and is the best-preserved medieval town in Brittany. It has the most magnificent 13th century monastery, intact ramparts, tiny narrow streets full of craft shops, and exquisite old houses. Your holiday home is situated in the heart of the mediaeval town , on the cobbled street, Rue du Petit Fort, within a few hundred metres of the city walls and the port. Dinan is listed as a 'ville et pays d'art et d'histoire' - reserved for towns that demonstrate they are trying to make the most of their setting, attractiveness and architecture.

Dinan is a wonderful centre for exploring the most interesting towns and sites in Brittany. Within half an hour's drive are the walled city of St Malo, the resorts of Dinard, St Lunaire, and St Jacut de la Mer, the famous Oyster town Cancale, and the inland towns of Dol de Bretagne and Combourg. A little further at 45 minutes are the world heritage site of Mont St Michel and the Brittany capital of Rennes.

Other Activities: Hire an electric boat on the Rance - 250 metres at the end of the street

Notes:
The house is situated on the mediaeval cobbled street 'Rue du Petit Fort'. This street is quite steep and access on foot for the elderly or infirm might be difficult. Similarly wheelchair access is tricky. The street is generally pedestrian only, but there are no restrictions on car access for residents including holiday renters, so if you have elderly or infirm members in your party they can be delivered directly to the front door of the house. Parking long term in front of the house is discouraged especially on weekends so as not to distract from the scenic beauty of the street for walkers going to and from the port. This year we are providing, free of charge, a parking permit for the secure underground car park at Centre Historique (8 minutes walk)
