The Hohe Schule was built in 1574 by the count of Losenstein, owner of the nearby Schallaburg castle. The building has authentic arches and wooden windows shutters.
It was the first Lutheran high school in Central Europe and famous for the relatively modern school regulations ('Schulordnung' ) which has been researched by the University of Vienna, where also the original document is kept.
My wife and I are from the United States and selected this property as a central location to explore North Central Austria and Vienna. We are regular travelers to Europe and Hohe Schule filled our desired travel and living requirements. We stayed two weeks in Loosdorf. We took the train to Vienna (one hour train ride) to avoid the city traffic. We drove through the beautiful Danube Valley and surrounding countryside to enjoy its many abbeys villages and castles.
Loosdorf is a small village but had two markets, a bakery and meat store in easy walking distance from the schule. The town beneath Melk Stift was less than ten minutes away and provided several nice restaurants for our enjoyment.
The first floor apartment we rented was huge with plenty of room for the two of us. It was clean and equipped with all the basic necessities. With large windows and high ceilings, as well as a brightly colored decor, the apartment was cheerful and welcoming. The owners are in the process of painting the exterior and upgrading the windows which will make it even more of a gem. The building is old and the floors a bit uneven; but, this adds to its historic charm, A minor point: It would have been nice to have a toaster oven and microwave available.
Everything worked well and when we had questions on any thing, the delightful and gracious owner (Wennie) was available in the building to help us out.
We were very pleased with the apartment and would recommend it to friends. The Austrian countryside offered numerous historic attractions and is postcard beautiful. Wennie made our stay even more delightful.
The Hohe Schule is centrally located in Lower Austria for trips in a fascinating region. Boat tours can be made and wine tasted at restaurants along the Danube.
Vienna at 60 km distance can be reached from the house by road or train. It has many attractions as the Palace Schönbrunn, the Opera, Hofburg, the amusement park Prater, Spanish Rising School, Stefansdom.
St Pölten is a pleasant cultural town at 20 km offering music, film festivals its Italian style centre and home to 'Ironman' sport.
