|Minimum Stay||2 - 4 nights|
Enjoy an owner-hosted vacation stay at Counting Eagles, where the great forests end and the grasslands begin, a unique vista estate with 360-degree views as far as the eye can see. This beautiful vacation experience combines as much privacy as you want on your own floor with living room, game room, sitting room, kitchenette and wrap-around decks, with conviviality on the main floor with hosts Bill and Diane, including tours of the Counting Eagles turn-of-the-century collections of art and antiques, full kitchen privileges, and upon request, concierge and local touring services. A bonus is the tower, leading to the Cupola with wrap-around views, a double bed and its own bathroom, and the Aerie, a viewing room and deck with views forever and the stars of the Northwest's clearest night sky.
Known locally as "The Castle," Counting Eagles sits at 2,222 feet and commands views of 12,000ft Mt. Adams over the Klickitat Canyon, Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Gilbert, the Simcoes, and all the way to the Horse Heaven Hills. Spring brings profusions of wildflowers; in summer, breathtaking sunsets; in the fall more sunsets and the great horned owl returns. Winter brings the eagles and the ermine play in the woodpile. All year the deer, wild turkey, hawks, the occasional elk, bear, and other wildlife come and go.
From the great room with marble fireplace and full kitchen shared with your hosts, with Wolf gas stove, Miele convection oven, standard oven, and breakfast/lunch areas inside and out, retire to your own floor. The left wing has your living room, with couch, chairs, plasma TV/DVD, dining table, granite breakfast bar, Mt. Hood, Mt Adams and your own door outside. The to-be-finished kitchen presently has a microwave, refrigerator, toaster oven, and coffee maker. The bedroom has a queen bed and child's crib, the bathroom has a full bath, and adjacent to these rooms is a perfect child's sleeping nook with a child-sized bed.
To the right on your floor is a sitting room with a 1859 cast iron fireplace. Off the sitting room are two bedrooms with mountain views, one with a queen bed and one with two twin beds. There is also a bathroom with stone tile shower, and a game room with views over the Goldendale where you can unwind at the pool table or play a few hands of cards at the poker table. Off the game room you will find the gallery of Columbia Gorge landscape art and a chess/checkers table.
Or, a lucky couple can retire up the spiral staircase to the Cupola, passing a bathroom with granite tile shower, to the octagonal 22-foot room with 360-degree views. A quilted double bed sits on hardwood floors with a sitting area, hot-plate, and half bath with a sink from an old Union Pacific parlor car.
Counting Eagles will always be a work-in-progress, but its extensive developments make it a unique experience to the vacationer seeking a different get-away.
This is also the perfect home for a family holiday retreat. The house will be fully decorated at Thanksgiving and Christmas with all the equipment and dishes for a memorable holiday. Very unique & extremely interesting destination. Owners were very gracious & had a wealth of information about the local area. They have a magnificent home & filled it with interesting things that they are willing talk with you about.
I loved the house, so many nooks and cranny's. The history of the place was amazing, from the name of the house to all the different antiques. For me the art work was amazing I love art, and the pencil sketches above the fireplace were exceptional. I would love to own one of those sketches. I was very impressed with them and Bill explained them too me and was awestruck with the story he told about them. They fit nicely with the decor. All in all it was a great experience and I would definitely go back.
