This rental more than met our expectations. In fact, we were so pleased with our initial two day stay that we extended it for three additional days. It's even nicer than the photos would suggest. The craftsmanship and the furnishings are top notch. The kitchen is spacious and has all the equipment and supplies one would need. WiFi, wide screen TV and the telephones (free calls to Hawaii and to the mainland) all worked to perfection. High quality and special touches are everywhere (Shirley has sewn all the curtains and pillows herself). Beds, chairs, couches are all comfortable and the property is clean and well maintained. The extensive library in the second floor sitting room was much appreciated. For the money, it is an outstanding value.
Shirley and Rick were wonderful hosts. They live a short distance away across the pasture field, far enough to give you privacy, but close enough if you need anything. We often would go out for a chat when we saw them out feeding the horses or the chickens, and felt that we departed as friends as well as renters.
This property would be most suitable for those who appreciate a country location away from the rush and noise of resort areas. Although only an hour and a half from both Kona or Hilo, it is not in the "fast lane" and might not appeal to renters needing to be close to the "action" in a more heavily touristed setting. For supplies, the village of Na'alehu is only 5 minutes away and has a satisfactory grocery store plus a few restaurants and bakeries.
Four Arabian horses and about 30 chickens have a free run of the large pasture field surrounding the property. We enjoyed sitting on our second story deck in the evening to enjoy the ocean view and to watch the chickens going to roost in a nearby mango tree. At dawn we were serenaded by roosters and the cackling of the hens as they came out of the tree. Everyone might not enjoy these sounds, but we did. For those who don't care to be awakened early, Shirley thoughtfully provides early plugs in each bedroom.
We explored South Point, Punuluu Beach and Ka'a Coffee Plantation on easy day trips with our rental car. Volcano would also be an easy day trip. At the end of our stay, our rental seemed like home. Highly recommended.
