Magagnosc is a picturesque village outside Grasse in the beautiful hills above Valbonne, just 30 minutes from Nice International airport. Our house is in a quiet street below the main village with uniterrupted views down the valley towards the coast and the Esterel mountains. Along the side of the property is a small path that leads to the pretty area around Peyloubet, the little hill you can see from our terrace. All in all a perfect location from where to explore the many sites in the Alpes-Maritimes and Provence.
Antibes and Cannes are just a short ride away, and equally, you are in no time in the beautiful villages of Gourdon, St Paul de Vence and Biot, with many fabulous hiking and cycling routes in the hills. The famous perfumeries in Grasse are less than 15 minutes away. Also close are the rural surroundings of Provence with pretty hilltop villages and the Lac de St Cassien, which offers many great water sports and is often less busy than the coast.
Further afield, it takes only one hour to reach St Tropez, Monaco or the Italian border, and 1 1/2 hours to be in excellent ski resorts.
The nearest village is Pre du Lac, with shops, restaurants and local amenities, while the popular market towns of Valbonne and Mougins are just a 10 minute drive away.
This part of the South of France is a paradise for sports enthusiats. There are many excellent golf courses within half an hour from Grasse, including Golf de la Grande Basitde and Golf Club du Saint-Donat outside Mouans-Sartoux and many others. The Four Seasons Resort Provence at Terre Blanche has become one of the most favoured golf destinations (the hotel has gorgeous Spa facilities for non golfers!).
Other sports facilities nearby include tennis, horse riding, cycling, go carting, paragliding and of course many fantastic hire places for all sorts of water sports along the coast and nearby Lake St Cassien. Many famous hiking and cycling routes can be found in the hills. Fun Kart on the way to Gourdon is an outdoor, long-track go-karting with breathtaking views for non-karters. Adventure sports are available with guides in Pont du Loup or Castellane. River walking is available between Pont du Loup and Saut du Loup. Excellent skiing is less than 2 hours away.
At home, we have 5 bicycles for casual cycling and an outdoor, good quality, table tennis that is always a great way to burn off excess energy after a fun day out.
On the cultural side you are really spoilt for choice. There is so much to see in the South of France such as the Matisse Chapel in Vence, the Fondation Maeght in St Paul de Vence, the historic centre in Grasse with some wonderful early Rubens paintings in the Cathedral Notre Dame de Puy, many wonderful museums in Nice and Vallauris and last but not least the excellent Picasso Museum in Antibes. If you are into buying art then you will find many fine art galleries in Mougins, Cannes, Nice and St Paul with great exhibitions of talented artists, many from the local area. And don't forget to visit the great perfumeries in Grasse which make this the perfume capital of the world!
The Côte d'Azur wouldn't be the same without the amazingly blue Mediterranean and its famous beaches along the cost. We love the quiter beaches between Théoule-sur-Mer and Pointe de l'Esquillon on the way to St-Raphaël but anywhere around Cannes and also the Cap d'Antibes is simply beautiful.
For rainy days or if you look for activities for the whole family then visit the glass factory in Biot or the Marineland adventure park in Antibes. The Oceanographic museum in Monaco is also a great outing and so are the picturesque hilltop villages in Provence up hill from Gourdon. St. Tropez, Monte Carlo and nearby Italy are also always worth a visit and great fun for a day out.
Closer to home we have many wonderful weekly markets where you find the freshest produce from the local area. Our favourites are the small market in Pre-du-Lac on a Monday morning and of course the fantastic and well famous market in Valbonne on Friday mornings. Le Rouret and Roquefort-les-Pins also have their weekly markets and in Opio there are often special markets in the evenings.
We have a large selection of guidebooks and maps in our house available for everyone to share and enjoy during their stay. There is also a large veriety of books and a well stocked DVD library. Enjoy!
