Overview

Onancock Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Beachfront Cottage Sleeps 2-3

Imagine driving down a long dead end road and discovering a small colony of just 8 cottages nestled along the Chesapeake Bay. Welcome to Crystal Beach Cottage in Crystal Beach Colony where daily life is calm, peaceful and untroubled.

For the sportsman, our cottage is situated on the Chesapeake Bay with decent fishing directly accessible from the bank or nearby boat launch. Waterfowl hunting in the highly productive Barrier Island Chain is only a few miles away or you can hunt directly offshore here on Bayside!

After sundown from the back deck, you can see the twinkling lights of historic Tangier Island. By day when the sky is clear, a distant image of the little island town is also visible. Tangier was a strategic British base of operations during the war of 1812, and it is approximately 13 miles distant in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. Boat tours are available for visiting the wonderful and unique island. This makes for a great day of sightseeing, shopping and dining on local cuisine, along with a fantastic boat ride to and from the destination.

Wallops Island is a well known NASA location for rocket launches into outer space. It has become a significant facility which deploys many rockets throughout a typical year, including the launch to supply the International Space Station. From the back porch of 'Seven Mile House', these spectacular events are visible in the night sky. On a clear evening, one can actually see the rocket profile and separation of the various rocket stages during early, rapid acceleration. The light show from the blast and burning fuel is spectacular! Plan your vacation when a launch is scheduled from Wallops Island for an unforgettable event in your Chesapeake vacation! Information regarding upcoming rocket launch dates is available from the NASA website at

About Patty Phillipy

Hi, we are government retirees from Pennsylvania who enjoy spending time on the Eastern Shore of VA, traveling to national parks and other scenic lands and spending time with our children and our grandson.

Patty Phillipy purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Patty Phillipy chose Onancock

We looked long and hard for a vacation home that was off the beaten path yet near a nice little town, was on the water and had a mesmerizing view. This property has all of that and more!

Just what we wanted

  • 5 of 5

We wanted to escape the rat race for a long weekend over Valentine's weekend and just relax, do much of nothing. The cottage was perfect for this purpose. Delicious dinner at the Blarney Stone on the way in Friday night. Explored a few stores in town on Saturday after a perfect breakfast at the general store. Purchased some seafood at Onancock seafood to cook on Sunday so we wouldn't have to go anywhere on Sun. Was a good plan because Sat night and all day Sunday, the weather was very Arctic! Sustained high winds all night and day - wind chills below zero. Could not believe on Sunday morning the Bay was frozen! It was beautiful. We saw 2 beautiful sunsets while there. Owners were great with communication all the way through. We found the cottage to be clean and had everything we needed. We were bummed that it was too cold and windy to enjoy the nice firepit on the beach, but sure enjoyed the inside fireplace! Despite the severe cold, we had a wonderful time. Want to return again when the weather is warmer. Thoroughly enjoyed Valentine's Day dinner at Mallards. And yes, the goodies at the Corner Bakery were wonderful! Stopped on the way out Monday to get some to bring home and they were closed due to frozen water pipes. Bummed. We'll just have to get there again. Thanks for the great stay!

Relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in this adorable cottage on the bay. The cottage was well supplied and comfortable. We enjoyed our walks on the beach, fishing, trips in to town (loved the bakery). Bill was so friendly and helpful. We can't wait to book another stop there. Thank you for giving us 2 days of R & R before the holiday chaos.

Wonderful place to create a memory

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at this cabin! The cabin was well-stocked and decorated with a beautiful retro feel. All of our basic needs were well-cared for and the process was made as easy as possible from registration to check-out. Having a personal beach area with a fire pit right on the water was fantastic, and the owners even stocked fire-starting materials. Thank you so much Bill and Patty :)

A Peaceful 4th Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 3, 2 adults and a 7yo boy, absolutely adored this place. It was so adorable (I'm QUITE partial to mid-century modern!) and met all of our needs nicely. The size is perfect and very quaint...it makes the stay feel very much like a getaway. Its wonderful to walk right out onto one's own little bit of sand and the sunsets were phenomenal. The two double beds were comfy and my husband and I had no problem sharing one, while our son took the other. -- The only issue was that the folks upstairs did not mind the warning about the septic and must have used a lot of water on one of the days. When we returned from our outing up to Chincoteague, the septic was overflowing in the front (there are two cement access doors where the water seeps out) and it caused a scent in the air and we felt we could not get cleaned up in the evening or we'd worsen the problem. I think the warning about that should be a BIG sign in both unit's bathrooms to ensure guests read it! --- But, nonetheless, we LOVED it and can't wait to come back!!!!

We Wish We Had Stayed Longer!!

  • 5 of 5

Bill met us at the house and told us a little about the neighborhood and home. He was very friendly and helpful. The space was absolutely perfect, and although it is below another vacation home, we felt that we had plenty of privacy. The view from the back windows was breath taking, especially at sunset. We knew the home was on the waterfront but it surpassed our expectations for beauty and peacefulness. We wish we had booked more time. My ten year old son had the best time wandering along the shore and exploring the area.

Incredibly cozy!

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful time staying here. Not only was the place well stocked (coffee, tea, creamer, sugar, etc.) but very cozy with a great view. I only slept on one of the two beds but it was very comfy and the extra blankets made it even more snug. Bill and Patty were gracious hosts, looking after my needs but giving me plenty of space and privacy. Not to mention that Onancock is a great little town with very friendly people.

I'll be back!
