Wailuku House Rental Photos and Description
1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, 2 Sleeps
Most definitely a special spot for those who seek connection to the places they visit. Iao Valley Inn mixes the best of a B&B and private vacation rental on 30+ acres of verdant land, gardens, stream and natural swimming holes. There are plenty of options for peace and quiet, romantic strolls, recharging and relaxing just outside your door.
The friendly and available owners live in the attached home. Bob & Tamara are truly exemplary ambassadors of an authentic Maui experience, and are equally happy to allow guests full privacy as they are chatting or providing local insight and connection to Maui. In fact, both Bob & Tamara have deep connections to the community and culture that most long-time residents would be hard-pressed to duplicate – an invaluable resource for those looking for a more meaningful vacation.
A simple breakfast is served continental style daily on the breakfast lanai. Breakfast includes hot & cold cereals, pastries, rolls and/or muffins alongside yummy local fruits, coffee and tea. The fruit and the coffee is often fresh form the gardens!
Bob & Tamara are genuine, super friendly and incredibly knowledgable about Maui. If authenticity in travel is your thing, you can’t do much better than to connect with them during your stay. Tamara has been Maui County Parks Director and Director of the Maui Historical Society. Bob started Kama’aina Properties in the 70?s and both have always been strongly involved in the Maui community and enjoy sharing their love for Maui.
Iao Stream cuts itself deeply into the 30+ acre property. You can gaze from a cliffside view, or the more adventurous can swim under a waterfall while they take a refreshing dip in the crystal clear plunge pool. (Definitely consult with the owners for safe routes to more hidden pools!) During heavy rain in the mountains, peaceful Iao Stream can turn into a dramatic river that is not advisable to enter (though it is equally enjoyable to watch and relax within earshot.)
Among the gardens are a large collection of orchids – many in bloom – as well as countless examples of many other tropical plants and trees. The land also hosts a small-scale coffee farm and a handful of sheep and chickens can be found grazing in their own corners of the property. Guests are welcomed to visit, feed and enjoy the animals.
Iao Valley Inn is located just outside of Wailuku Town, where the West Maui Mountains split to open into historic and sacred Iao Valley. The location is just ten minutes from the airport and perfect for folks who like to sightsee and plan on exploring all around Maui (something I suggest no matter where you stay!) It’s also quiet and worlds away in attitude and experience from the touristy hotels and resorts.
Iao Valley State Park – a must see – is literally your neighbor. 15 minutes in the other direction takes you to the Maui Ocean Center and the Maalaea harbor for snorkel boats and whale watches. You’re also five miles from Maui Tropical Plantation and and you’re just 15-20 minutes from the resort areas of Kihei & Wailea. Half an hour will get you to West Maui’s Lahaina Town. You’re also a bit closer to a Road to Hana adventure and your visit to Haleakala than the bulk of Maui visitors.
n your immediate neighborhood, Iao Valley is just a minute or two away by car and has hiking trails (Kepaniwai Park just between here and Iao Valley is a great spot for a picnic.) The North Shore of West Maui starts close to here as well, with scenic vistas and less crowded hikes like the Waihe’e Ridge Trail. If you’re interested in learning more about Maui and Hawaiian history and culture, the Bailey House Museum is also close by and holds a large collection of photographs and Hawaiian artifacts that range from traditional stone tools to Duke Kahanamoku’s surfboard. (Bailey House is also a great place to score some unique gifts that are actually made in Maui.) Tip: Tamara served as the director of the museum, so a nice chat with her before a visit is time well spent!
For windsurfing and kite surfing enthusiasts, Kanaha and Kite Beach are ten minutes away.
An incredible value for your travel dollar when you consider what resort lodging costs – and the unique value added experience and authenticity that comes alongside is invaluable.
