More details:

Paia Bay Suites is a new vacation rental offering in one of Paia’s most desirable locations. It sits on Loio Place, a side street which is oceanside of the highway yet is just a short stroll from the heart of Paia Town. It’s a great location for guests wanting to be close to Paia Town and the ocean.

Paia Town is an eclectic town with a mix of locals, surfers, New Agers, evangelical Christians, hippies, monied people, working folks, artists, snowbirds, Buddhists, and more. It was a rough plantation town that is now transitioning into Maui’s hippest beach town destination.

The property consists of a two-story cottage on a large fenced lot close to the ocean of Paia Bay (it is not oceanfront).

The Garden View Suite is on the ground floor of the cottage. The Bay View Suite is on the second floor of the cottage. The Bay View is accessed by an exterior stairway. Guests can rent the Bay View Suite or the Bay View and Garden View Suites together. The Suites are not rented to different parties simultaneously, so guests will have the entire property to themselves.

(Beware of unlicensed vacation rentals. Maui County is preparing enforcement operations against unlicensed operators which may include closures with limited warning to travelers. Paia Bay Suites is fully licensed and your booking with us is secure.)

Guestbook comments from the manager
A gem of a place, truly enjoyed our stay. Kitchen was put to good use, well appointed, tank you (real sugar preferred). Bathroom is a class act, great toiletries for use (we forgot some). We found the location very convenient as we walked everywhere. We'll look forward to another visit.

The property is owned by brother and sister Jake and Ilana Waxman. Jake and Ilana were both born and raised here on Maui and grew up on Maui's North Shore.

Alyson Hodges purchased this cottage in 1977

The property was purchased as vacant land in 1977 by Jake and Ilana's late father, Maui surfer and attorney Jonathan Waxman. Jonathan bought the lot because of its great location being so close to the shore yet an easy stroll to Paia Town. He built the house in 1987.

Paia Bay Suites is situated on Loio Place, one of the very few roads in Paia Town that are ocean side of the main road (Hana Hwy). The Paia Bay Suites are on an 8,000 square foot fenced lot which provides plenty of off street fenced parking and a very large yard.

The Paia Bay Suites are in a great location that is easy walking distance to the beaches of Paia and just a short stroll from Paia Town's shopping and dining.

Yet the property is tucked away from the bustle of Paia Town and has a large, green yard sheltered by shade and shower trees. It's a great place to come back to after a day of being in the ocean or exploring Maui. You can take a shower to wash off the salt and then walk to Paia Town for dinner and stroll home to watch the stars and the ocean from the deck.

Please note that Paia Bay Suites is NOT oceanfront. It is separated from the Paia Bay shoreline by a 6' wall. This is a benefit that is obvious to locals and becomes more apparent the more time one spends in Paia as it keeps the property secluded from the busy Paia Bay beach scene. Our guests do what almost all the Paia locals do anyway: stroll over to the beach.

away from it all, short walk to town

  • 5 of 5
My fiancée and I loved our two-week stay at Paia Bay Suites. I’ve been to Maui many times and knew Paia, though I’d never considered staying there till I found this rental.

What a perfect arrangement. Less than 10 minutes drive from the airport. Rental is on a short street, quiet except for the early morning roosters and the sound of the surf at night. Yet it’s less than a five-minute walk to town and its restaurants (we recommend Flatbread, Cafe des Amis, Milagro, and Charley's) and shops. The rental has no TV and we were there during the NBA playoffs. No problem. We walked to Rock,n,Brew and watched the games on their multiple big screens (while eating surprisingly tasty food for a chain).

The view from the living room is spectacular. The breezes flowing through the bedroom at night heavenly. The yard is large and a perfect spot for yoga and meditation. Though the property is not immediately on the water, it is a one-minute walk to a grassy point where we watched the sunset every night, while counting sea turtles in the water below. To get to the beach for a swim calls for walking up to the Hana Highway and then a few minutes more, maybe 10 total.

Paia is an excellent location – especially if, like me, you want to avoid the worst of the tourist crowds. 10-15 minutes to Haiku and Makawao, upcountry Maui; half an hour to Wailea; an hour to Lahaina; two hours to Hana. The upper suite is lovely – tastefully furnished with an Hawaiian feel, windows all around. Bathroom is large enough and you can see the ocean from the shower as well as horses grazing in the land across the road. No AC – but the fans and the local breezes keep things comfortable, though it can get a bit warm on the hottest hours of the hottest days.

Owner was available and helpful. Example: we wanted a baking pan and he delivered two within hours.

Birds, breezes...and mangoes!

  • 4 of 5
We stayed for a week with my husband and I in the upstairs suite and my parents in the downstairs suite. Upstairs, we absolutely LOVED the ocean view (no cities or resorts in sight! Just beach, trees, and rolling waves - just like the pictures), the wonderful bedroom with evening breezes and morning birds, the light-filled living room, and the plentiful mangoes. These are some of the best mangoes we've ever had and we multiple fresh ones every day from the tree - such a treat! The downstairs suite is much plainer, does not have a view, and has fewer ammenities, but the managers were very responsive to our request for a second coffee maker and toaster and brought them over promptly. Despite poor reviews of the nearby beach (in Maui Revealed), we thought it was lovely and very swimmable. At the rocky beach down the street, we saw turtles playing in the waves everyday. We mostly cooked and ate at the cottage, but Paia town was seconds away for the occassional dinner or lunch we felt like eating out. This was a great retreat and we'd definitely stay again.

Hidden Treasure in Paia

  • 5 of 5
Everyone has their version of paradise. If your version features a big hotel with valet parking, turn-down service and a big-screen TV in the room, don't stay here. But, if like us, you like a tastefully decorated, natural-light-filled cottage with a gorgeous ocean view, ocean breezes and your very own mango tree in the fenced yard, this is paradise. It's both rural and urban. Located on a quiet, private lane in an ocean-side residential area of groovy Paia, the cottage is adjacent to pasture land and trees full of birds. It's also steps to the little town and its shops and restaurants (we loved Cafe des Amis). There's no direct beach access and that's a plus, not a minus as we walked every morning to the cove at Baldwin Beach or the "lane pool" at Baby Beach. We stayed in the upstairs suite (spotless!) which had everything we needed for cooking, beaching, napping, etc. Great WI-FI. The owners are warm and welcoming, too.

Hippie times had by all ...

  • 4 of 5
Nice property, very clean and modern. Owners are very attentive. The place needs something else though like a hot tub or a roof top deck. The beach is 50 feet away as the crow flies BUT you can't get to it as it's land locked within a little neighborhood. You need to walk through the town (Paia) to gain beach access (about 3/4 of a mile). The internet worked well, the bed was comfortable and all appliances were working fine.

Owner's Response: (May Update: We double-checked the distance to the public swimming beach at Paia Bay. It's 0.4 mile or 8 minutes walking on the sidewalk through Paia Town per Google Maps. Direct public access to the shoreline itself is a 2 minute walk from the Suites but is not recommended due to rocky terrain). Thanks for the review Jeff. Yes a hot tub or a deck would be nice. A deck is next on the list of major improvements to be completed. Until then, guests can enjoy the outdoor patio area and large yard. As with all the lots on Loio Place, none have beach access, including the multimillion dollar oceanfront homes next door. The street runs along the northern side of Paia Bay which is all rocky shoreline. There is access to the shore at the end of the road (point), but it is rocky and not good for swimming. However, the house is very close to the ocean, and there are great ocean views from upstairs. And the price for Paia Bay Suites is much more affordable than it's oceanfront neighbors, which makes this house unique and special. Thanks again and hope to have you back!

Prefect Beach House

  • 5 of 5
Very clean and comfortable accommodations with an amazing view of the incoming waves. The house is down a quiet street and is less than a 5 minute walk to the heart of Paia. The host was very professional and made sure everything was taken care of on the property. The upstairs is finished much nicer than the downstairs (downstairs feels a bit like a typical basement suite) but really both are nice and best suited to be rented together. Best place we stayed in while on Maui for several weeks.

Paia Bay Suites is located a few minutes' stroll from the heart of Paia Town yet is tucked away on Loio Place, a side street 50 feet from the ocean of Paia Bay**.

Paia Town is Maui's North Shore beach, surf and boutique shopping town. There are unique shops, a variety of great dining, Maui's best (and cheapest) health food store, and surf stores.

Paia is inhabited by an eclectic mix of local families descended from the plantation days, hippies from the 1970s, working people, monied retirees, hardcore big wave surfers, windsurfers, kiteboarders, farmers, New Age adherents and mystics, and evangelical Christians and energetic entrepreneurs.

The North Shore has great surfing, snorkeling, diving and beaches for swimming and walking. In the summertime the waves are small and the water clear. In the winter, massive swells roll across thousands of miles of open Pacific Ocean and make landfall all across the North Shore resulting in worldclass surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding. Paia is 15 minutes from the renowned Jaws surfbreak where the world's best tow-in surfers compete while helicopters film from above.

** Please note: Loio Place is on a rocky promontory which keeps it secure from ocean waves. All of the vacation rentals on Loio Place use Paia Bay as the nearest beach because the shoreline along Loio Place is rocky. Paia Bay Suites has a fantastic view of Paia Bay and the surfers but is not oceanfront.
