The cottage is just 3 minutes drive to the following beaches: Madalena do Mar - the new seafront at Madalena do Mar now provides easier access to the beach and includes sports facilities and restaurants. Praia da Madalena do Mar has 700 square metres of sun deck, a pier and two ramps down to the pebble beach. There is also a children’s playground and a volleyball court. Calheta Beach - the municipality of Calheta has invested considerably in improving its natural resources, including designing a golden sandy beach. Situated near the new marina, it has a solarium with an area of 7,300 square metres and the beach itself measures 28,550 square metres. We can expect plenty of people here in the warmer months of the year.
Special interest holidays: You can see birds like the long-toed pigeon (Columba trocaz), Zino’s petrel (Pterodroma Madeira), Madeiran chaffinch (Fringila coelebs maderensis) and Madeiran firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus maderensis) and trees like the stinklaurel (Ocotea foetens), laurel (Laurus azorica) or Madeira mahogany (Persea indica), along with a variety of other unique shrubs, plants and mosses.
Outside: The cottage has a fantastic network of trails and levadas. There are 2 (Madalena do Mar and Achada) of the more than 200 trails criss-crossing the island’s basalt rock masses, taking hikers into a rare natural world. Along these irrigation channels you will come across species of fauna and flora found hardly anywhere else in the world, in Madeira’s traditional Laurissilva Forest, which has been declared a World Natural Heritage Site.

Arco da Calheta is a very attractive village which has a social centre, cafes and a number of small supermarkets which sell everything you need. The locals reckon that Arco da Calheta has the best micro-climate of all! It’s a quiet location – you are more likely to hear the neighbours’ dogs and chickens than traffic. The Calheta sand Beach Hotel which is down by the beach has a spa which the public can use and there is a leisure centre, banks, a big supermarket named 'Pinco Doce' and the Iates marina with their restaurants. Driving towards Funchal you will find Madelena do Mar where there are restaurants and bars and a rocky beach. Further on is Ribeira Brava, with another rocky beach. There is also a small market, a large supermarket, banks and a number of restaurants.
