Tamara Lupoloff built and planted her farm here in Hakalau. Recently retired from 27 years in the travel industry, she knew this little piece of Hawaii was where she wanted to be. Her planning and hard work has allowed her to share her dream with others, and she enjoys welcoming guests from all over the world to experience the serenity and beauty of Hawaii.
Tamara Lupoloff purchased this cottage in 2005
Tamara loves the tropical weather and ability to grow a wide variety or fruits year round. The view and the neighborhood, with her close proximity to the ocean, make it home.
Tamara custom-built the houses and planted all ten acres just the way she had always dreamed. The views are magnificent. Guests have space to stretch out and get away from it all while enjoying the easy, beautiful drive to all that Hilo, and the Big Island, has to offer.
This vacation home was amazing! Everything was so clean and beautiful! The welcome bowl of fruit and homemade banana bread was so delicious and thoughtful. Tamara was so gracious and accomodating and so very helpful!! We loved our stay so much we are planning to come back!! The fruit farm is so nice to wake up to every morning. Having a nice cup of coffee on the beautiful porch over looking the fruit trees and lush property were one of the things I enjoyed doing every morning. We felt cozy and at home here! Mahalo Tamara!!
We have enjoyed our stay. The morning and night chirping of birds and frogs was special. So was the clear night sky. The cottage was comfortable and I loved the furnishings and Tamara's availability. Thank you for a very pleasant experience.
I was planning my honeymoon and was a little apprehensive about using homeaway.com. I had heard some nightmares that had happened to other people using the site. But after staying at Tamara's fruit farm cottage i am a firm believer. My wife and I arrived late at night after an entire day of flying to find her beautiful cottage tucked in the hills above the ocean. everything was neat and clean and there were two loaves of banana bread freshly made waiting for us. My wife and I spend 11 days there and we had an absolute blast. it was like home-away-from-home. we bough fresh fruits and vegetables at the local market and cooked dinner in the kitchen and had refreshing breakfast on the back porch overlooking the fruit farm with mona kea looming in the background. It was absolutely the best vacation experience I have ever had and my wife and I agree Tamara's fruit farm made for the perfect honeymoon experience. Thank you Tamara for everything!! We will be back soon :-)
Our family really enjoyed staying at the Family Fruit Farm. We particularly enjoyed the rural, tropical location and spending time on the lanai. The cottage was very clean, comfortable and well supplied. We did day trips to the volcano, various waterfalls and Hilo market which were comfortable driving distances. We found the space a bit tight for our family of 5 (3 children ages 17+) but would highly recommend the Family Fruit
Farm for couples and families. The hosts were very friendly and helpful.
We highly recommend staying at the Family Fruit Farm. This small bungalow style house is very quaint and is located a nice comfortable distance from the town of Hilo and the Hilo Airport. Our stay was unfortunately cut short by the threat of an approaching tropical storm, so we left a day early, but the property grounds, lanai and interior of the property were very well taken care of and had everything we needed to make our own meals and relax. Like most reviews in the Hilo District area, yes there are lots of animal noises at night however we found them to be very soothing and did not bother us when we were sleeping, great background noise... There is a small fan on the bedroom dresser that makes enough soothing noise to drown out the frog croaking but we choose to leave it off and enjoy the sounds of nature. Oh and ditto on the great fruit basket and banana bread upon arrival? We will be back as soon as we can.
The cottage was very cute and clean, and well laid out. Coffee, banana bread, and some fruit were supplied for us on arrival. We have two kids who did not want to sleep in the same queen bed, so the hostess supplied an extra fold-out bed. The lanai was very peaceful and surrounded by a variety of young fruit trees, and we loved hanging out there. A local neighborhood market had plenty of local fruit and other treats. The place is about 20 min from Hilo, and very close to Akaki Falls State Park and the Tropical Botanical Garden - both recommended. Tamara was extremely nice and supplied us with information and anything else we needed. We were disappointed to have to leave and head for the Kona side! I highly recommend the farm for families or couples.
Hakalau beach is five minutes away and is a great place to go surfing, fishing, diving, or kayaking. The Hakalau River flows into the ocean here;you can swim in the cold river and float into the warm ocean. There is a small black sand beach and bathrooms are available. It is a historic site with ruins from the plantation days. This beautiful side of the Big Island, known as the Hamakua Coast, has numerous waterfalls. The famous and beautiful Akaka Falls, a favorite theme of many local musicians, is located 15 minutes away in the quaint town of Honomu, which has places to eat and shop and one of two spectacular and popular zip lines. The other just 10 minutes away. Laupahoehoe point, which is named for the leaf-shaped lava along its beaches, is 15 minutes away and features the train museum and the Back to the 50's cafe. We have two botanical gardens. Hilo is 20 minutes away and Waimea cowboy country, home to the famous Parker Ranch, is just 55 minutes away. The spectacular ocean view drive stretches in both directions.
