Recent review: 'We had a great experience at this house! It was charming and roomy, and we were able to walk into town to get dinner and go to the beach. Great place!' May 2014

Suttons Bay, in the heart of the Leelanau Peninsula, is the perfect place to discover the pleasures of Leelanau County. Walk on endless Lake Michigan beaches, sail in Grand Traverse Bay, shop in the quaint towns of Leland and Glen Arbor, boat on Lake Leelanau, go wine tasting, spend a day in Traverse City - just 15 miles away, visit the Sleeping Bear Dunes or explore farther and see all of gorgeous Leelanau County.

Our guests love that they can walk everywhere; to the beach, cafes, shops, excellent restaurants and the movies, all within less than 5 minutes.

Our recent guests commented: 'The house is darling. So cute!'

Recently updated throughout, this stylish home features 3 bedrooms plus an attached twins room and a sitting room with a pull-out sofa, and 2 full baths. Enjoy summer evenings sipping local wines and grilling on the deck, overlooking the perennial garden with pocket views of the bay.

Once a schoolhouse, it is now thoughtfully renovated for vacation living, with comfortable furniture, luxury linens, fresh paint throughout, updated kitchen, central air conditioning, wireless internet and two Smart TVs.

In addition to sailing, boating, fishing and swimming in Lake Michigan and Lake Leelanau, you can golf at a selection of quality golf courses nearby, hike on many well-maintained trails, and bike throughout the county. Bike-enthusiasts love the TART railroad trails which pass right thru Suttons Bay.

'The white-sand beaches feel as sweeping and sublime as oceanfront' Martha Stewart Living July/August 2013.

In the Spring and Fall you can take a wine tasting tour, hike the Conservancy trails, golf at Manitou, bike the TART trail, play at the Casino, walk the beaches, or explore the microbreweries along the 'Traverse City Ale Trail.'

Suttons Bay is great for families of all ages. Walk to the wide sandy beach of Grand Traverse Bay, just 2 blocks away, where you can watch the sailboats and your kids will spend hours in the sand, playground and calm water which is ideal for swimming. Teens can bike throughout the town or walk to the town's tennis, volleyball, basketball courts and marina park. Bring a picnic to either one of the town's beaches to enjoy the view; plenty of picnic tables and grills are provided.

All year long you can explore the Leelanau Wine Trail and taste North Michigan's award-winning wines. Just ask, we are happy to design a personalized vineyard and wine-tasting tour for you, with just the right restaurant to end the day.

Everyone will enjoy evening strolls through town, savoring Moomer's ice cream just one block away, window shopping or catching a film at The Bay Theatre.

The Schoolhouse Cottage, just one block from St. Joseph's Street, is in a prime location in Suttons Bay, a highly desirable year-round vacation destination. Best of all, the house is on a quiet street just 2 blocks from the Suttons Bay beach and town park, 1 block to the town's best restaurants, Martha’s Leelanau Table, 9 Bean Rows and North Country Grill & Pub, and a quick walk to many art galleries, boutique shopping and the Bay Theatre.

Our Sunday to Sunday rental is ideal for wedding parties in the Spring and Fall.

Internet, Laundry, Central A/C, off-street parking for 4 cars.

The Leelanau Peninsula has a wide variety of special events throughout the year. Visit our website www.suttonsbayweekly.com for links to our favorites; the Suttons Bay Art Fair, Leland Wine & Food Festival, the Traverse City Film Festival, the Yeti Fest and much more!

We are now taking reservations for Spring Wine Tasting, Summer 2015, and Fall color tour get-aways.

We take checks (no fee) or credit cards (3.5% fee)

If this house is booked when you want to go on vacation, feel free to take a look at our house in Leland, the Bluestone Cottage: VRBO # 456621, which sleeps 8-12 and is located just 3 blocks from Lake Michigan and Historic Fishtown.

Looking to bring your boat on vacation? Consider the White Birch Cottage on Lake Leelanau. Enjoy a luxurious vacation in this well-designed waterfront home which sleeps 10-12. Relax on the porch overlooking the picturesque Narrows, sit by the gas fireplace, or watch a movie in the media area. VRBO #610555

Feel free to ask for suggestions about restaurants, things to do, wine tour ideas, and hiking trails. I love Leelanau County and I love sharing it with others. I am happy to help in any way to plan an excellent vacation.

About Melissa Smith

Our family of four lives in Grand Rapids and we escape to Leelanau County every chance we get! We love walking the beaches with our Golden Retriever, hiking and geocaching throughout the county, waterskiing and tubing on pristine Lake Leelanau, and exploring new restaurants and wineries!

Why Melissa Smith chose Suttons Bay

The Schoolhouse Cottage is a charming historic house which we really loved renovating. Suttons Bay feels like a resort. Reading and sun-bathing on the beach, sailing and kayaking in the bay, playing tennis, trying new restaurants, exploring cute shops, relaxing in cafes, everything you want to do is right there within a 5 minute walk.

What makes this house unique

The Schoolhouse Cottage has a generous open living and dining room which we love for entertaining friends. The street is quiet, yet very close to town. The outdoor patio is a favorite spot for early morning coffee as well as for long family dinners sharing summer memories!

Love this place !!!

We had a wonderful time. Location is PERFECT!!! One block from downtown Sutton's Bay which had lots of quaint stores for shopping and nice restaurants. Also only one block from the beach. House was very nice. Tons of space. The bed was very comfortable. Visited Leland for shopping and Fish Town. Visited North Port Lighthouse at top of peninsula. Great food and lots of wine tasting everywhere. :-) Can't wait to do this again next year as there are tons of activities for everyone and you can't beat the location.

Family celebration

  • 5 of 5
The schoolhouse cottage was so quaint and roomy! My family of 8 had plenty of room to spread out! We enjoyed playing games every evening around the large dining room table! It was so nice to be within walking distance of town. We enjoyed breakfast every morning and went into some of the shops! We attended the wine stompede and had a blast and cannot wait until next year! Melissa was so helpful with every aspect of our stay. The only thing missing was regular tv. Some of the family wanted to watch news and football, but only had Netflix.

Gathering with Friends

We had a wonderful stay and Melissa was so easy to work with. We had 9 in our party and there was plenty of room. The location is great and a 2 block walk to the ice cream shop was a nightly must! You are a short drive from everything and a short walk down to the beach. Our grand-dog loved it! The beds are very comfortable and nightly games around the dining table were a blast!

Cute House! Very inviting!

  • 5 of 5
Thanks for an outstanding week at the Schoolhouse Cottage. We really enjoyed Suttons Bay Village and Leland! I loved how close the house is to the town park. The house was very clean, with new paint and very new bedding! We had lots of space for our group to spread out. It was warm and cozy, even with the sudden unforecasted snowy weekend! We'll be back!

Another awesome week in Leelanau County - our 4th trip! Enjoyed shops in Suttons Bay, new organic restaurant and The Bay Theatre. Ventured to Leland, Traverse City and went wine and cheese tasting at Black Star Farms. So much to do in your area. Melissa, thanks for the tips.
House was so clean and comfy. Loved the beds. Room for our group of 8 to spread out. Can't wait to come back!
