We are renting our Ohana (i.e. guesthouse). The unit is attached to our home, but is very private and doesn't have any shared walls. It is separated from our home by a breezeway and large Lanai. The unit has it's own private entrance and covered parking in attached carport. Ohana is 1000 square feet which includes: 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living room, dining room and small kitchen (see photographs for more interior details).
This one-of-a-kind property is conveniently located with a private driveway and gate directly off Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19). The home is surrounded by 3 acres of tropical flora, including fruit trees, palm trees and fishpond with no other home in sight. Extremely private, yet easy to find and located just 13 miles from historic downtown Hilo and 15 miles from the Hilo Airport. This one bedroom, 1 bathroom unit boasts an open floor plan with unobstructed ocean views from the bedroom, the kitchen, the dining room and the living room. It has new bamboo and tile flooring throughout, new granite slab countertops and sinks in the kitchen and bathroom. The unit has the basics for preparing simple meals including an outdoor gas grill. Enjoy free Wi-Fi and streaming Netflix or just kick back and read a book in this peaceful and private setting.
We are originally from California, but have always had a love for Hawaii. I spent childhood vacations visiting my grandfather in Maui and we've been coming to the Big Island to visit my father since he retired here in 2000. My husband and I are both serving in the US Navy.
Our managers, Sandy & Bob are very attentive and live about a mile away if you need anything during your stay.
Sandy & Bob Nutt purchased this bungalow in 2012
My husband and I bought this home from my Father who lived here for 12 years. He bought it from the owners who built the house in 1979, on property which they acquired in the plantation era. Historically the property was the site of the Wailea Sugar Mill, which closed in 1944.
For us, it was all about the view. We love waking up to beautiful sunrises over the water and seeing waves crash along the rugged coastline. Maybe we're biased, but we honestly feel like we've seen a lot of homes in our area, even other oceanfront homes, and we've yet to find one with a better view.
We hope you will come stay and fall in love with it like we have!
This house was lovely and a perfect point of departure for Mauna Kea and Volcano National Park. Whales are sighted frequently here - enjoy sunny days on a lovely expanse of lawn.
We enjoyed our stay at this home as part of our 45th anniversary trip to the big island. Everything was just as described. Sandy welcomed us right away and offered her help with any information about our visit. We visited Hilo several times and places all up and down the eastern side of the island...even Volcano National Park after sunset. The house was very private, comfortable well stocked with cooking supplies. Sunrises, ocean vistas easily visible from main living spaces.
Stayed 4 days while visiting family. Nice to have a few days alone and this was perfect for that. Everything I needed was there and the owner was very kind and responsive. Not too far from Hilo but not too close!
We stayed the week of Christmas. House was easy to find, very comfortable home, and beautiful scenery. You cant beat the price for a stay like this! There is plenty to explore and see around the Hilo area. Akaka Falls and the Botanical Gardens are just down the road from the house and downtown Hilo has some nice places to eat. We would definitely stay here with the house seclusion and privacy.
This was truly great place to spend time. The ocean front views were extraordinary. The grounds were fun to walk and the house was just perfect for two people. I have recommended this house to a number of people. Sandy, the manager was warm and generous. We will return to Big Island soon and hope to use the Cliffhouse again. Really a great location for the Hilo side of the island.
This was just as described. A clean ohana with a million dollar view. Away from the crowds, but easy driving distance to everything.
I reviewed some of our favorite local attractions on gogobot so you can check those out and you can see what other people are saying about them. Locally, I think Kolekole Beach Park, the little town of Honomu, and Akaka falls are must sees (and all located in or on the way to Honomu, 2 miles from our house). If you want to do something adventurous try ziplining (we recommend Skyline Akaka Falls - also located in Honomu). Downtown Hilo is 12 miles away and has just about everything you'll need in the way of restaurants, grocery stores, museums, and other outdoor activities. The nearest airport is 14 miles away, also in Hilo.
