We are renting our Ohana (i.e. guesthouse). The unit is attached to our home, but is very private and doesn't have any shared walls. It is separated from our home by a breezeway and large Lanai. The unit has it's own private entrance and covered parking in attached carport. Ohana is 1000 square feet which includes: 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living room, dining room and small kitchen (see photographs for more interior details).
This one-of-a-kind property is conveniently located with a private driveway and gate directly off Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19). The home is surrounded by 3 acres of tropical flora, including fruit trees, palm trees and fishpond with no other home in sight. Extremely private, yet easy to find and located just 13 miles from historic downtown Hilo and 15 miles from the Hilo Airport. This one bedroom, 1 bathroom unit boasts an open floor plan with unobstructed ocean views from the bedroom, the kitchen, the dining room and the living room. It has new bamboo and tile flooring throughout, new granite slab countertops and sinks in the kitchen and bathroom. The unit has the basics for preparing simple meals including an outdoor gas grill. Enjoy free Wi-Fi and streaming Netflix or just kick back and read a book in this peaceful and private setting.
We are originally from California, but have always had a love for Hawaii. I spent childhood vacations visiting my grandfather in Maui and we've been coming to the Big Island to visit my father since he retired here in 2000. My husband and I are both serving in the US Navy.
Our managers, Sandy & Bob are very attentive and live about a mile away if you need anything during your stay.
Sandy & Bob Nutt purchased this bungalow in 2012
My husband and I bought this home from my Father who lived here for 12 years. He bought it from the owners who built the house in 1979, on property which they acquired in the plantation era. Historically the property was the site of the Wailea Sugar Mill, which closed in 1944.
For us, it was all about the view. We love waking up to beautiful sunrises over the water and seeing waves crash along the rugged coastline. Maybe we're biased, but we honestly feel like we've seen a lot of homes in our area, even other oceanfront homes, and we've yet to find one with a better view.
We hope you will come stay and fall in love with it like we have!
My husband and I flew into Hilo, after a short stay on Oahu, and this was the 2nd of 5 stops for our honeymoon. It was hands down our favorite! The rental is a shared property with the owners, but the main house was vacant during our stay. The home is gated and as the title and pictures show, overlooking a beautiful cliff by the ocean. Words and pictures can't describe how amazing it was. There are no visible houses around either. There are a few nearby, you just can't see or hear them, so you feel like you are in your own little world. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves on the cliff side was heavenly! A short drive to Hilo, yet secluded and private. Perfect. The owners, knowing it was our honeymoon, didn't stop in but respected our privacy. That being said, they were just a call away if we needed them. We hope to come back to the Big Island in the future and will definitely want to stay here again. Thanks so much for the amazing stay!
This was a beautiful private property. The view from the residence looking out to the ocean is gorgeous. It is located within convenient driving distance to Hilo and attractions such as the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, Akaka Falls State Park, and further away sites such as the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and Punalu'u Beach Park where we enjoyed seeing large green sea turtles dragging themselves onto the beach to rest. The town of Hilo itself has some beautiful public park areas such as Liliuokalani Gardens.
We scheduled our visit to see some of the traditional dancing during the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo which we enjoyed much more than that we saw later at a luau on the island of Ohau.
The property managers communicated efficiently with us in advance of our stay. We were there for 7 nights. It was also great to have access to wi-fi and Netflix at the property during some of the wetter weather we encountered.
The only recommendation we have to improve the stay for renters would be to upgrade the toaster oven which did not seem to work all that well. We have owned a few of our own and found that for whatever reason this one seemed to take an unusually long time to cook.
Pictures do not do this property justice. It is exquisite in every way! Location, views, amenities, landscaping, privacy, delightful and helpful property managers and ease of ... well everything!! It is so very convenient to Hilo and getting around particularly the windward side of the island but it feels so utterly remote. Can you get better than that!? As wonderful as the Big Island is with it's endless supply of sites to see, leaving home is really hard when home is the Kole Kole Cliff House!
My husband and I stayed at the Cliff house for three nights. The day we arrived there was a view of a rainbow extending down to the ocean. What a good omen! We loved strolling through the spacious yard and staring at the view of the ocean crashing against the cliffs. What was really nice is that you also have a full view from inside the living room too so you can sip your coffee in the morning and just chill. The sound of tree frogs and other critters at night made me feel like I was in a jungle. It scared me a little the first night but I was used to it by the second night. We enjoyed visiting the local sights (4 mile scenic drive, Rainbow falls, Akaka Falls and just driving around). We also went to the Volcano National Park and Black Sand Beach, which was cool. The kitchen had everything we needed and the bedroom had a view too. The unit is connected to the rest of the house but no one was staying in the main house. It looks like it's in the process of being remodeled inside. I might have felt uncomfortable ambling around the yard if the owners were staying in the house but we had it to ourselves. The unit doesn't have air conditioning but there are lots of screened-in areas and windows that you can open and I really liked the ocean breeze. My husband and I didn't miss not having AC at all but thought I should mention it for those who think it's necessary.
When we arrived we we're static that we were going to be staying at this very private estate. The Ohana house was designed and furnished top shelf and the views of the sunrise and ocean are spectacular. Directions and instructions were very clear but Google Maps GPS was helpful coming home late one night when it was pouring rain. We enjoyed using the Bbq on the lanai.Wifi worked fine due to a booster they had installed on the property. Though folding recliners were provided, it would have been nice to have full chaise lounges to enjoy the sunshine too. We had come for the Merrie Monarch Festival and it is only 20 minutes to the stadium. Next time we come to Hilo we will be sure to stay here again!
This house was lovely and a perfect point of departure for Mauna Kea and Volcano National Park. Whales are sighted frequently here - enjoy sunny days on a lovely expanse of lawn.
I reviewed some of our favorite local attractions on gogobot so you can check those out and you can see what other people are saying about them. Locally, I think Kolekole Beach Park, the little town of Honomu, and Akaka falls are must sees (and all located in or on the way to Honomu, 2 miles from our house). If you want to do something adventurous try ziplining (we recommend Skyline Akaka Falls - also located in Honomu). Downtown Hilo is 12 miles away and has just about everything you'll need in the way of restaurants, grocery stores, museums, and other outdoor activities. The nearest airport is 14 miles away, also in Hilo.
