Sea Island Estate Rental Photos and Description
2 Block From Beach, Marshfront, Sleeps 14
This Spanish Colonial is in a pristine setting on the marsh just two blocks from the beach. Casa del Pantano, which means “House of the Marsh,” despite its 9,811 square feet, looks as if it might have grown here by natural means. The home’s architects, Frank McCall and his apprentice at the time, John Phillips Shackelford, Jr., AIA, followed the homeowner’s wishes and designed the house to give the appearance that it had been added to over time, yet when viewed from an angle, many facets of the hacienda are revealed.
Casa del Pantano is a version of the 1920s tiled-roofed and stuccoed Mediterranean style popularized by the noted Palm Beach architect, Addison Mizner, and is designed to take advantage of the picturesque building site overlooking the famous Marshes of Glynn. The homeowners and Shackelford took every opportunity -- including trips to Portugal -- to achieve authenticity and to create a distinctive hacienda with genuine charm. In Portugal, Shackelford formulated ideas to adapt to a contemporary house and gathered building materials with character: old tiles; decorative ironwork; antique pine doors of which there are 100 in the home; and custom-made windows, French doors and rugs. Later, contacts were used to obtain ornamental iron hardware and mural tiles for fountains and other special features.
All of the stone work was hand-carved in Mexico. The result is a festive island cottage so authentic one almost expects to hear the Romance languages of Spain and Portugal murmured softly in the cloisters and loggias, under the tile roofs and shaded courtyards, and around the stone fountains surrounded by flower pots and sculptured urns.
Everything planted is chosen to blend with the interior colors of the house so that the garden reflects an interior palette as well. Lovely plantings and color guide the eye as well as the feet into the pool garden. It creates a “wow” factor when entering the area. Continuing on, there is a cloistered garden which is flanked by columned walkways in which the second “axis” fountain is spotted. The yard itself is a grand marsh vista. Plants are used for utility to provide color and texture and for their ability to catch the breezes and dance in the wind. Nothing looks contrived – everything fits just the way it should. This is a magical spot with a feast for the eyes.
In 2007, the six bedrooms (each with a private bathroom), ten full and one half-bathroom home underwent a complete renovation to bring into pristine condition.
There is a one bedroom and living room apartment over the garage that has a pull-out sofa. The apartment rents separately and is not included in the rental.
The owners have a full time housekeeper who may be available, if desired, for an additional cost.
