New 2 bedroom secluded wooden lodge that sleeps 4/5 with stunning views to all sides and the use of a shared pool and barbecue. The lodge has heating & air-conditioning.
Surrounded by cork forest, vineyard and beautiful hills you can wake to the sound of birds, you are only a short drive to shops and local amenities and within 2hrs of Lisbon or Spain 1 hour drive.
The Wood Lodge is ideally suited to writers, nature lovers, bird watchers, star gazers, romantics and those seeking tranquility and simplicity with modern conveniences fitted, and yet within walking distance of main farm house or pool . Feel free to roam the farm tracks or ask for a guided farm tour in our truck.
There are a myriad of activities to enjoy on the farm. For the walkers or mountain bikers there are kilometers of footpaths around the 540 hectare farm for you to explore and for those wishing to venture further afield, the nearby peaks offer unrivalled views of the surrounding countryside. Serra d’Ossa lies at 500 metres above sea level and boasting one of the driest climates in Europe. The absence of light pollution makes this an astronomers’ paradise.
Twitchers can enjoy seeking out over 70 species of birds in the unique habitat provided by the cork forest, several of our past guests are members of the RSPB and have made lists of the birds they have seen / heard. Here is a list of a few: White Stork, Booted Eagle, Red Kite, Kestrel, Cuckoo, Tawny Owl, Hoopoe, Red-Rumped Swallow, Great Bustard, Little Bustard and Bee Eater. Visitors to the local damn include black winged stilts and the occasional avocet. Very occasionally, bustards can be seen in the lower plains.
Within a one-hour drive from the farm, you can also explore nearby towns including Evora (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Estremoz famed for its Saturday morning market, Vila Viçosa with its two royal palaces, Reguengos and even neighbouring Spain.
Vineyards : While predominantly a hilly cork forest , a vineyard has recently been planted in an open valley producing Alicante Bouschet, Aragonêz, Touriga Nactional and Syrah quality grapes. Most of the grapes are sold; however a selection of the best quality grapes are retained for the production of a high quality red wine sold in Portugal under the Cem Reis label, and in the Netherlands under the Het Tientje name. This wine has been awarded silver medals in Wine Masters Challenge (Portugal), Mundus Vini (Germany), and Challenge Du Vin (France). Next year a white wine will also be produced from viognier grapes.
Hi, my name is Philip and I'm the farm manager of Herdade da Maroteira. The farm has three houses in a beautiful traditional cork forest, with amazing views of cork trees, olive groves and vineyards. The area is ideal for sightseeing in a scenic and historic part of Portugal, within easy reach by motorway of Lisbon (2 hours) and Spain (1 hour).

Our policy, as a family-owned farm is to farm in a manner that is environmentally sustainable and provides value to the local community through employment and resource-sharing.
When you book us you will be helping us protect the cork forest and the local enviroment.
Nice landscape, wooden lodge with sufficient space to live at ease, kind dogs following you when you go walking, we immediatly felt like at home.
We went for 7 nights and stayed for 9. The wood lodge was a perfect base for exploring the surrounding Portuguese countryside. We even made day trips into Spain and visited Caceres and Merida. There is a new grocery store in town which allowed us to buy and cook our own food. There is a bbq for grilling right next to the cabin. Phillip and Marge are awesome hosts. Their wine is fabulous. We loved the dogs, especially Trash, who was always up for a walk on the property. The pool is very refreshing on a hot summer day. It is about a km down the road on the property, but you can walk through the cork forest or drive your car. If you need constant Internet access we would recommend staying in one of the other units. Phillip and Marge were great about letting us use their patio every day to upload our photos and work on our blog. This is a wonderful place to relax and experience the real Portugal. We heartily recommend it!
This place is a hidden diamond. An easy trip to Evora, the megaliths, and Estremoz. The owners are wonderful. Dog-lovers, they have beautiful boys, and beautiful property. The cabin is very clean, new, fenced so your neighbors (the goats) can't visit, air-conditioning, lovely shower and bathroom, and your own kitchen! The view is amazing, and you are really on your own out in the beautiful "wilderness" really isolated. And its fantastic.
The lodge is secluded in a cork plantation on a hill with a marvelous view to all sides. In fact it is only 150 meters from the main house, but it feels very private. At night there is a spectacular nightsky with stars.
We were a family of four touring Portugal and we felt very welcome at Herade da Maroteira. A family owned estate with very friendly and hospitable owners, English/Portugese/Dutch speaking. The place lies 2 kilometers of the main road and a somewhat rucked drive.
However, prepare for warm atmosphere, a unique experience, a well hidden gem for the tourist, who seeks a special vacation off the beaten path. And at a very affordable price to boot.
Tags: Clean, must like dogs (very friendly!), close to nature, private, warm family owners.
A delightful place to get away. The cabin has gorgeous views of the forested hills. At night the stars are wonderful. The only light visible is from the little village across the valley. All you hear is a pair of owls and the occasional tinkle of a goat bell. A cock crows in the morning. The 1000 acre property has lots of trails to walk. We found wild orchids in December.
Evora, Estremos, and Elvas are less than an hour's drive on good roads.
The cabin was clean, well stocked, and well maintained. The owners were friendly and helpful.
Stunning place to stay! We stayed here in september with our baby, the owners were really friendly and hospitable, they even brought us a bag of wine and breakfast goodies when we arrived, what a welcome! The log cabin is on a hill and the views of the surrounding cork forest and hills opposite are beautiful. The highlight of our holiday was sitting on the porch having a barbeque and watching the sun set, there is nothing more relaxing. There is lots of walking and exploring to do on the farm, lots to see in the surrounding towns and villages, and you will hopefully have time to chill out by the pool at the end of the day! Cant recommend this place highly enough
