Casa Violeta is a charming old colonial home with original pasta tile floors and high ceilings that was completely renovated 3 years ago. There are 2 large air conditioned bedrooms, one with 2 single beds which can convert into a king bed and a master with a queen bed. Spacious living and dining rooms, large bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and an extra outdoor shower. Beautiful wrought iron doors lead to an indoor/outdoor patio which has bi-fold wrought iron doors that lead to a private outdoor garden and pool.
The main square, restaurants, theater, churches and shopping are all within easy walking distance.
I live in Vancouver Canada with my husband and 2 cats.
Carole Segal purchased this house in 2013
We fell in love with Merida, and this house in particular, while vacationing in the Yucatan. We will use Casa Violeta as our vacation home and as a rental until we move to Merida in a few years time.
Casa Violeta is a beautiful old colonial home with high ceilings, arches, beautiful handmade pasta tile floors, and a lovely private pool and garden. Merida is a very clean and safe city with amazing architecture and the people of Merida are very friendly and helpful. The house is in the best area of Historico Centro and everything of interest is a short walk away.
This review is quite late, I left paradise to work in a remote area of canada with no internet access! I spent a month in Merida this fall, and was lucky to be welcomed back to Casa Violeta for a second time. As expected, the house was perfect in every way, and enjoyed by myself and a few friends that come to visit. The location is perfect, within walking distance to the centro, and just blocks away from the wonderful Santiago mercado. This was my first time meeting property Managers Carlos and Liz. Although i arrived on an early morning flight, Carlos was there waiting and brought me to the house to get settled in. Carlos and Liz checked in throughout my stay, provided everything I needed and were instrumental in informing me of upcoming events and attractions. I am now sick of canadian winter...and hoping to plan yet another trip to casa violeta soon! Thank you Carole, Jeff, Carlos and Liz for helping to make my vacation wonderful! always grateful, Amanda.
My boyfriend and I stayed at Casa Violetta for 3 nights. Carlos was wonderfully helpful in not only arranging transportation from the airport but also gave great advice on what to do & where to go in town. The house was so comfortable and well kept while having so much original character. The backyard pool was nice and quiet for relaxing after exploring town all day. Merida was extremely historical, interesting, fun, safe, and clean. Not too many people spoke English, and we barely spoke Spanish, but nonetheless everybody was extremely friendly and helpful. If we make it back to Merida we will definitely be staying here again!
What a charming place to stay at Casa Violeta. The setting, location, and the home itself was a private oasis! The property managers- Carlos and Liz were very attentive and and helped us navigate our early days while in Merida. Casa Violeta was equipped with our every need- kitchen, bath and linens! Huge towels for the devine pool also! A must stay for anyone wanting to be in the middle of things to do in Merida. Easy walk to the parks and downtown area. We are hoping to return to Casa Violeta in 2016.
My wife and I just returned from a very enjoyable stay in Merida. Casa Violeta is in the perfect location (walking distance) to practically everything. Both the owner (Carole) and the property manager (Carlos) were extremely attentive and responded to any questions immediately. The property is much larger/better than the pictures portray. The pool was so nice to cool off in on a hot day.
The people. Everyone is very friendly in Merida.
Take the 9am Tuesday Home and Garden Tour at the Merida English Library (just around the corner). It will give you a look at 4-5 properties that have been renovated around the area.
Have some drinks by the pool.
Take a "beach day" and take the bus to Progreso (I think it only cost $3 for the both of us).
Tour Uxmal or Chichen Itza
We loved our stay at Casa Violetta in Merida! The location in the old part of the city is awesome as it is within walking distance to all the major sites of interest and is a very nice part of the city. I always felt safe and there were always friendly people around to help whenever we needed directions or advice.
The nearby Santiago Square has a nice market which is a great place to grab some delicious, cheap tacos, and there are often free events in the evenings such as music and dancing, and when nothing is going on at Santiago, it is easy to walk to the other plazas where one is bound to find traditional dancing or a night market or some other free event. Casa Violetta is also within a fairly easy walk or a quick taxi ride to the bus stations where you can catch buses taking you outside the city for day trips to locations of interest such as the beaches at Progresso, the flamingo tours at Celustun or the ruins at Uxmal.
Although it is in the heart of the city, the street is nice and clean and it is very quiet at night. I slept in the front room on the street side and was never bothered by the noise.
The house itself is incredibly charming, as an old colonial that has been restored and updated very tastefully: beautiful "rigas" or beams and a dramatic cast iron chandelier in the living room, lovely pasta tile floors, cute and clean little kitchen and lovely covered patio area for eating breakfast in the morning or enjoying margueritas in the evenings. There is also a dining room big enough to entertain a group of six easily. The back court yard is not large but there is plenty of room for lounging around the dipping pool. Jumping in the pool after a hot day touring the city is pure bliss!
The rooms at Casa Violetta are very clean and everything you need to make yourself comfortable is provided. The beds are large and comfortable, and the bathroom shower works very well for a Mexican house where water is supplied through gravity feed from a tank on the roof. The kitchen renovation has maintained the charm of the room, while providing modern appliances and everything you need to cook your own meals. The rooms are very cool even on the hottest days, owing to the lofty ceilings and tiled floors throughout, as well as the overhead fans.
All in all, Casa Violetta is reasonably priced and is better than staying at a hotel as it is private and feels more like you are at home. It's a great urban oasis!
I recently got home from my most amazing vacation thus far. I travelled solo for my first week in Merida and was grateful to feel so comfortable, safe and secure during my stay at casa violeta.
Carole and the property management staff were amazing, had excellent communication, and made me feel welcome from the first moment Scott picked me up at the airport. The neighbourhood is probably the friendliest and safest neighbourhood with a policia at almost every corner! I definitely recommend experiencing casa violeta for yourself, the photos do not compare to the joy and peace felt within those walls. I've been home for three days and already beginning to plan my return to the fortress!
Casa Violeta is located in the Historic Centro area of Merida in the Santiago district just north of the Plaza Grande. It is 2 blocks from Santiago Square where you will find the old church, founded in 1637 and the surrounding park and marketplace. Here you can purchase all your fresh fruit and vegetables and enjoy the Big Band music and dancing every Tuesday evening, or enjoy tradition food in the many outdoor restaurants. Enjoy traditional Yucatecan performances in nearby Santa Lucia park on Thursdays and in nearby Santa Ana park every Saturday evening.
