Life in Palm Desert is extremely pleasant and at our home even more so, with its twenty-eight hundred square feet. There are three bedrooms, each of which has its own vanity area, separate toilet and shower, and large walk-in closet. Two of the bedrooms have California king beds while the other has two twin beds, great for children . There is an extremely large living room and dining room area, and a fully equipped open concept kitchen that looks out onto the dining area and the landscape and pool that lie beyond the living room. The living room has floor to ceiling windows running its full length, which open in two places to provide doorways out to the patio outside. On our property you will also find a tangelo tree, a lemon tree and a grapefruit tree, plus a picker which will enable you to pluck the fruit and eat it.
The living room and two bedrooms enclose the inner courtyard, with table and chairs, umbrella and small barbecue. There you can sunbathe and eat in total privacy while enjoying the benefits of the outdoors. At the end of the courtyard are a laundry room on one side and a workshop on the other, where there are two bikes which our guests are more than welcome to use. The bedroom with the two twin beds has floor to ceiling windows that run half the length of the room, providing another access to the patio and view of the common area landscape. A professional staff maintains the swimming pool and gardens.
Our property has maintained much of its mid-century modern look and feel. It is at once spacious, comfortable, clean and quiet. One of the bathrooms has been totally redone. The other two still have the mid-century décor, but are in perfect working order. Most of all, the house provides the luxury of tremendous space, with a common area for convivial gatherings of family, friends and guests, all the while offering residents of the house, should there be many of them, their privacy. The hoopla of kids will be easily absorbed by the different rooms and even adults will come to relish the chance for a quiet moment on their own.
As you sit at the dining room table or on the living room patio just outside and look out at the mature trees and splendid flowers and magnificent hills beyond, you will sink into the calm and quiet of this choice location and wonder, as we do, how you can ever leave it. Daytime you look up at the sky and exult as its bigness; nighttime you behold the stars and marvel at their wonder. How could it be otherwise when the sun shines nearly every day of the year? And though you have all the recreation you may want at your fingertips, along with good food and wine at incredibly low prices, you also have an incredible sense of repose that does wonders for both body and soul.
We are Canadians who live in Vancouver BC and cannot, as yet, spend as much time as we would like at our Palm Desert home. In the meantime we are renting it out, hopefully to people who will treat it as their own and want to come back.

We love the desert, its landscape and its heat. At the same time, we appreciate the fact that Palm Desert offers, in addition, all the amenities one could ask for. The combination is unbeatable. When we first saw this house we fell in love with it right away, captivated by the great amount of space and stunning views. Our pleasure has only increased every time we go down and enjoy it, which is never enough!
People who are looking for sun, warmth, incredible landscapes and an incredibly relaxing time could not do better than our home in Palm Desert. In addition to everything the area has to offer, there is the overwhelming quiet and sense of peace that our home affords. Simply to sit and watch the view in the distance, or look up at the night sky and marvel at the stars you see so clearly, is enough to calm the agitated soul and remind you of the happiness that startles, as Rilke wrote, even when it falls. And then too, there is all that space, now filled with contemporary large paintings, which gives one a sense of freedom and comfort within the walls of one's own home. Priceless, as they say.
Sandpiper is the oldest residential development in Palm Desert, situated just off El Paseo Drive. Our house is one of twelve grouped around a common lawn and pool area, with beautiful mature trees, well maintained bushes and flowers, a practice putting green, shuffleboard deck, lounge chairs and barbecue for the use of residents. From our living room patio you can sit and enjoy the view of the manicured lawn, heated swimming pool and magnificent mountains in the distance. From the front door it is approximately twenty yards to the road that borders the development at the back. Across the road are hills that climb to the sky, criss-crossed with trails of various length and difficulty that form a public park. A little ways to the east up the road is an entrance to the park, where you will also find tennis courts. An even shorter distance to the west is a bridge that leads to a big box shopping and restaurant complex, as well as another entry into the park of hills and trails.
Our place is extremely well situated, close to the south end of the development, which gives it greater quiet and privacy. From the kitchen window you can see the hills and the sky beyond. At night it is as quiet as you could hope it to be. And yet you are a five minute walk from the local grocery store (Vons) and a fifteen minute walk from the hopping El Paseo, with its many shops, galleries and eateries. A further five minute walk brings you to the only enclosed shopping mall in the Palm Springs area. And not far beyond that is more shopping, including a Trader Joe's.
By car it is extremely quick to get to wherever you may want to go: excellent restaurants, the municipal park where you will find two lovely outdoor swimming pools, good for lap swimming and for children, more tennis courts, sports fields, the McCallum Theater, municipal library, the weekend open air market, a driving range and of course the whole range of golf courses for which the area is justly famous. One of the main north-south streets, Monterey, is two minutes by car from our house, and that leads you quickly to the I-10 and attractions beyond: Joshua Tree National Park, the Cabazon shopping outlets, windmill farms, and much more. Highway 111, even closer, will lead you west to Palm Springs and east to Indio.
