Beautiful island style cottage with sunset views and tropical garden. If you want to experience true hawaiian living in an eco-friendly natural environment this is your place. Have a soak in the tub, pick fresh herbs, veggies and fruit or stroll through the beautiful gardens and commune with nature. Watch the sunset from the meditation room lanai. Furnishings and art from around the world help make hale meow meow truely a special place.
My parents met and got married on Oahu in the mid 1940s. My mother was a pilot and mechanic at Hickam Field. They moved to Georgia and I grew up there. I bought this land with my sister and mother and moved to Hawaii. I have spent much of my life traveling the world and now my sister has moved and i stayed and i am a jewlery designer. I still travel to Asia alot searching for treasures for my jewlery, and have started this vacation home and the farming. I love plants and animals so this life has been great.
Linda Grimes purchased this cottage in 1989
When I first saw this property it was nothing but a thing called christmas berry but I knew it was where I should be. It was a long slow process turning it into what it is today, but worth every bit of it. Now, I just love being here.
We spend 6 nights at the island cottage. It was amazing. The property is like being in a tropical jungle. Our son who is 13 loved exploring the different plants and spiders that live on the property. Do not worry the spiders our not dangerous and the don't want to bother anyone so they stick to themselves. There were wild chickens and a rooster. It was fun watch the cats chase him out of the yard. The house was just like home. My husband and I slept down stairs and our son slept up stairs. He loved being able to have his own space. We loved all the decor of the house. Great things around every corner. We loved how the majority of the house is screened in. We were able to hear the great sounds of nature. We were able to get fresh fruit from the property which was great for breakfast. Linda the owner is there for any help and is a wonderful host. She is very talented too. She was so nice and we thank her immensely for here hospitality. Just a few head up in case these matter. Cell reception is not the greatest in this part of the island. There are a few cable channels but not like at a hotel. There was a great collection of DVD's and every night we would watch one. Also you need to conserve water. Like many in Hawaii there is a catch system. Were from California so we are use to conserving water but if you like a long hot shower you may need something else. We loved the shower due to it being outside. It was GREAT. We will defiantly be back. If you want to experience really living in Hawaii this is the place, paradise.
Our early February stay at Hale Meow Meow was Heaven in Paradise! Linda, the owner and host who lives nearby, is a Landscaper as well as a Jeweler and World Traveler – and it all shows. She has been planting flowering plants and fruit trees on the grounds for over 20 years now and the place is a naturalized absolute gem – with lava walls, well-lit walkways, flowery arbors and a petite pond with tiny redfishies…
For fruit, there’s not just totally fresh oranges, bananas, grapefruit, coconuts, star fruit, figs, limes, papaya and avocados for the picking – but also exotics I’d barely heard of let alone tasted – dragon fruit, rollina, egg fruit, soursop, surinam cherries, rambutan and more that are pictured on a giant poster decorating a wall
And the utterly enjoyable cottage that became our home for two weeks is an architectural delight interlaced with carved furniture and enchanting objects brought back from far flung stays from India to Bali. The simple, open layout lets the comfortable ocean breezes waft through the kitchen and bedrooms and provides incredible views of the Pacific, punctuated by palm trees. Immaculate throughout, the living areas are all screened against insects (no problem in the winter months.)
This place is also the cat’s meow – literally. While we got occasional glimpses of Ninja and the others, all-white Pueo (meaning owl in Hawaiian) was our greeter and part-time companion – his friendliness and serenity echoing the Buddha placed on the landscaped wall near the breakfast nook.
Hale Meow Meow’s location, on the west side of the Big Island, south of Kona (in the heart of coffee and macadamia country) also can’t be beat. Beaches abound in the area – our nearby favorite is Hokoko Beach with sunny sandy tide pools and surf-crashing cliffs. Shopping was easy with fresh OK-priced good food selections at the Choicemart in Captain Cook while the Sunday Farmers Market there had overflowing local selections. With such excellent roads on the island the place is also a good staging point for longer trips to the North End (there’s snow way up on the mountain!) or the completely awesome Volcano areas to the south and east.
It was amazing we felt so completely at home – in a luscious exotic Hawaiian sort of way that is! Thanks to our host’s soulful ministrations to every bit of our surroundings, our stay was wondrous and wonderful every day. All of which makes us want to come back to Hale Meow Meow next year for more – for sure!!
Superb Experience! A five star hotel could not stand up to it!
When I started to plan our trip to Hawaii there were many places to choose from and making the decision was not easy. Hale Meow Meow did not even show up until about a good week into my research, but the minute I saw it I knew that this magical place was where we wanted to be.
My selfish side wishes to keep this Magical Place a secret but it is impossible not to talk about.
We are so ever Grateful for being able to be a part of Linda’s Paradise!!! What a Wonderful, Warm, Caring, Down to EARTH and Most Gracious Host she is! We do need to mention her “business partner” Pueo as well. This charming kitty is a part of the Welcoming Committee and he takes his job of daily visits to make sure everything is OK very seriously. We were very sad to say good bye to them both.
We loved every minute spent in this enchanted place and are planning already for our visit next year.
The house is very comfortable, very well furnished and meticulously clean. Interesting design, pleasing artwork and attention to detail so perfectly reflect Linda’s creative soul. Kitchen is thoughtfully equipped, we cooked our dinners there every night and delighted in the sounds of Nocturnal Life. For breakfast we would pick our own fruit from beautifully landscaped gardens or use the gifts deposited by Linda in the “fruit box”. I loved becoming friends with lizards and geckos that would come for visits and drink the nectar of flower arrangements that adorned the house on our arrival.
My favorite spot was in the “bath house”, which is an interesting version of a screened-in gazebo. It was a perfect place to just sit and take it all in; I loved the feeling of calmness and beauty becoming part of me, while embraced by Mother Nature. I would go there with my morning coffee and watch the birds and flowers, and again in the evening to watch the Sun setting into the Ocean, joined by my husband for an evening glass of wine…
Thank you Linda and Pueo for your priceless friendship and unforgettable Hawaiian experience!
Our three day stay could not have been better, just arriving on island we were happy to be in a peaceful and beautiful cottage. Pueo the security cat was seen but not a bother and all of Linda's other cats were busy keeping the critters that make you jump and scream away.....Linda is an energetic, informative and a very generous hostess. Lovely fruit and vegetables awaited our arrival, insider tips on where to go for snorkling and just hanging or having lunch. Her cottage was immaculate, really tastfully appointed with a lot of the things you need to cook with like spices, foil, etc. The BED was fabulous, Internet fast and a ton of movies.....alphabetically organized....she's my soul sister from another mister! Thank you Linda for making the beginning of our two weeks in HI a great start! XO Toni and Bocci
We have wonderful memories of our time spent at Hale Meow Meow. Linda greeted us like we were old friends, and by the time we left, we considered Linda like family. Linda recommended wonderful places to us a bit off the beaten path to snorkel, and hike. The cottage and gardens are magical for northerners from Canada and a great escape, and we couldn't have asked for a more relaxing and enjoyable holiday to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary! We had morning coffee with Pueo and enjoyed a greeting from him every evening. Linda is a warm and kind host, we couldn't have asked for anything more. We hope to return again some day. Thank you Linda!
Hale Meow Meow IS the land of enchantment!
At about 1500 feet above sea level, the days are warm and evenings refreshingly cooler.
Linda is the consummate host- delightful to talk to, generous and very accommodating.
We appreciate her love, passionate artistry, and boundless energy that creates this Garden of Eden.
The cozy and spacious, multilevel home is uniquely designed and filled with beautiful art and furnishings from around the world. We were especially awed by the lush and colorful garden, which is visited by tropical birds, geckos and a chorus of frogs in the evening.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Linda and her charming felines for sharing their sanctuary of serenity with us on Hawaii.
Great central location for all sights on the Kona side of the island. There are beaches as close as 5 min. or 15 min. and a National Park just 15 min. away.
The volcano National Park is only 1 1/2 hrs. away.
