Morpho Eco Retreat is an eco-friendly, designed villa perched above the jungle valley. The villa has established itself as a unique vacation rental in the southern area of Costa Rica due to its unusual design and great privacy.
This unique estate, situated on four acres, just 10 minutes up the mountain from the town of Uvita, is ideal for those who seek modern comfort, an outdoor lifestyle, and amazing views.
Highlights of the property include onsite river access with a waterfall and swimming hole within walking distance, amazing views of the Whale's Tail National Park, and an intimate outdoor area that attracts many species of birds and butterflies. The expansive 180-degree view of the Whale's Tail with the Pacific Ocean as its backdrop, is visible upon arrival. The main deck, which functions as the outdoor dining area, offers daily opportunities for bird-watching and the westward view offers a wonderful vantage point of Cano Island, one of the finest destinations for snorkeling and scuba diving in Costa Rica.
Morpho Eco Retreat was designed by Los Angeles- based architect, James Meraz.
Limited environmental impact and the utilization of natural, locally-sourced materials were adhered to throughout the construction process. Many types of wood, native to Costa Rica, were used on the custom interior furnishings.
The result is a unique, modern two bedroom / two bathroom villa, accompanied by a separate one bedroom / one bathroom guesthouse set below, in the lush jungle.
The main house comfortably accommodates six while the guesthouse sleeps four… making this a perfect option for larger groups as well.
When viewed from above, the inward-facing roof design of the main villa evokes a butterfly-in-flight. The name, Morpho Eco Retreat, was derived from the Blue Morpho, one of the most beautiful butterflies in Costa Rica.
The primary residence includes a master bedroom, with a king bed set against a dramatic teak headboard which camouflages the master closet. Along with an en-suite bathroom that includes a double shower as well as his & her sinks, the area is a perfect refuge at the end of the day.
The guest bedroom, with its design oriented bunk-wall, offers ample sleeping room for four adults or children. Each sleeping compartment offers its own window, reading light and outlet for charging. The room has its own en-suite bathroom as well, with a bathtub and shower.
All rooms, with their high ceilings, ample windows and sliding doors with deck access, and upper wall-screens… provide ventilation via the ample, afternoon breezes, keeping the rooms airy throughout the day.
Functioning as an anchor for the two en-suites, is a lovely, open-concept great room. With its custom designed, modern kitchen that includes an eat-at-island, cooking and entertaining has never been easier! The kitchen area looks directly onto the living area, promoting conversation and participation from guests. All of the furnishings were custom built on site. All the kitchen appliances—refrigerator, oven, stove, microwave and dishwasher, etc… are brand new and the kitchen is well stocked with dinnerware for the next gathering and basic staples.
If you enjoy cooking outdoors, there is a gas barbecue located downstairs, next to the grassy garden, as well.
Step down the covered, steel staircase, and you are immersed in lush jungle, a forest of fern palms greats you as you arrive at the guest 'Casita'.
This residence is a self-contained - 500 sqft. house that boasts one bedroom with a queen bed and a full-size pullout futon in the open concept living area.
There is also a fully stocked kitchen, complete with refrigerator, stove & oven, coffee maker. There is an indoor table that seats four as well as a covered, 285sqft, dining area located outside that overlooks the ocean as well as the jungle valley below. The intimate setting, offers privacy as well as a very unique, outdoor, rain shower experience.
Perfect, jungle hideaway for couples or additional guests with young children… the casita sleeps four people comfortably. The sounds of the river will lull you to sleep!

The Owners Story:
Our family journey to the Pacific coast of Costa Rica began in 2008 on vacation. After purchasing the property in 2010, the design process started. With a few more trips extended over two years, construction of our dream getaway was complete. We are excited to share the Morpho Eco Retreat with other nature enthusiasts. For our family that includes two sons, ages 9 and 15, our home and casita have been a perfect place to unplug from todays' busy lifestyle in Los Angeles. Each trip we experience the bountiful nature that Costa Rica has to offer. We welcome all future guests to the Morpho Eco Retreat and we wish you a wonderful time in discovering the beauty of this country and it's people! Pura Vida

The estate's proximity to the laid back, friendly town of Uvita, with its' central location near many restaurants and activities all while offering privacy and tranquility.
An amazing view of the ocean and Whale's Tail National Park. The tranquility one feels once they arrive, being surrounded by the sounds of nature on your doorstep from the moment you wake up through the end of a long, fun filled day. On-site access ( 7 minute walk with the jungle hanging overhead ) to a year round river with waterfall and swimming hole surrounded by the jungle. Stunning views of the jungle valley and and mountains. Many opportunities to view animals of the region in their natural habitat. These may include many species of birds, strange and amazing insects, howler monkeys, and wild peccaries to name a few.
We had a fantastic time staying at Eco Morpho Retreat in March 2015, our second trip to Costa Rica.
The house had everything we needed and is perfectly appointed high up on a hill, which meant no mosquitos and lovely fresh air. Eating breakfast on the porch was delightful as we saw many beautiful birds every day. We ate at home every evening and the gas grill was great. We were very lucky with the weather and spent every daylight hour out and about, but can easily imagine that it would be enjoyable to be in the roomy house and on the generously sized porch for an afternoon of heavy rain. With binoculars there are endless things to see. The little swimming hole on the property is a lovely private retreat just a short walk from the house.
In the area there are many fun things to do with several beaches and forests to choose from. It’s hard to say what our favorite places to visit were, maybe Hacienda Baru? Or NP Marino Ballena?!
To stay at this beautiful property you do need a GOOD 4WD vehicle. We had rented a Toyota Rav4 from National in Alajuela (near the Airport) but it wasn’t able to get up the hill with all four of us plus our luggage! The car did fine going down and up the hill once a day without any luggage, but next time we would definitely rent a jeep or other more powerful 4X4 vehicle. Then we would have the confidence to do more exploring of the hills around the house.
This house is absolutely amazing! you can tell by every detail in the house that is was made with a lot of love. It was perfect for our family (7 adults and one 2 year old). The house is really comfortable, the rooms are really spacious and the kitchen has all the utensils you need, even a big BBQ. Even though there is no pool, you can find in the same property and walking distance a beautiful waterfall. You need to be be ready for a very very steep climb when getting to the house definitely a 4X4. The beach is a 15 minute drive from the house, so you are in the top of a mountain with amazing views and in just a few minutes you arrive at the beautiful beaches of the South Pacific coast of Costa Rica, most of them protected by the Parque Nacional Marino Ballena (you have to pay a little fee that covers your stay for all the day and for all the beaches in the PN, and with this money you help maintain the National Park)
Dawn the owner, Jairo the caretaker and his wife, and the property managers where really nice and always willing to help us. We had an amazing time in this house and I totally recommend it!
Our vacation in Costa Rica was amazing and the house we rented was gorgeous! It was perfect for the 9 of us! We had plenty of space between the main house and cassita. Our kids (ages 7-15 years old) enjoyed the watering hole and hunting for frogs outside on the property. Being located in the middle of the jungle was very cool, we enjoyed hearing the wildlife at night and seeing the lovely views during the daytime. The home is in a great location.
The caretaker on the property was wonderful and very accommodating. He helped us whenever necessary and was very attentive to our needs.
I would definitely recommend this place! It was the perfect private retreat!
Our stay was amazing. The house was gorgeous and perfect for our family. We had the most restful and relaxing time we can remember. We were so pleased with the surroundings from the waterfall and natural swimming pool to the design of the amazing interiors. The location was perfect. The close proximity to surfing, zip-lining horse riding, restaurants and more added to our enjoyment. We will definitely be back and will recommend your
property to groups and families alike. Thanks again for everything.
We are from Québec in Canada, and we go every years in Costa Rica to visit our friends that live near San Josée. Usually, I organise my trip before leaving home, but this year we decide to start looking for a place in Uvita when we where there. So, we find this fabulous place in the hill. The house is quite modern , the architecture of the hole place is very special and most of the thing is ecological. I will recommend this location to all my friends, to people that love nature at his best (lots of birds, animals and nice bugs) and the tranquilite.
We really enjoy our stay, lots of nice and not to crowdy beaches around, people are very nice, the manager is really helpfull and kind.
The only thing that you will have to know other than the peace of the place, is that you should be a very good driver to go up the hill where the house is nested. You must have a 4 wheel drive to go there but once your there... It's a paradise !
One of the best aspects of the house is its location.
There are two supermarkets in Uvita to purchase all your groceries. When you want to go out and eat, there are fantastic options in both Dominical and Ojochal, each located 20 minutes from the house. Ballena National Park, home to the famous Whale’s Tail, is just 15 minutes away. Furthermore, there are great beaches for surfing (Dominical, Dominicalito and Playa Hermosa) and relaxing (Playa Ventanas, Playa Ballena) within a short drive of the property. The town of Uvita also has its own popular waterfall that’s right along on the road to the house.
