My daughter lives in nearby Honokaa. Our family stayed at the Waipio house during the wedding fun.
A great space to prepare and then rest in. The deck overlooks the beach down below. This deck is enclosed and is massive. Large table to eat at, a hammock and more furniture. If there will be as many as 8-10 in your group, you wont feel crowded. A modern, clean and overly stocked kitchen contained all the needed utensils to prepare food for the wedding. Four friends worked easily together chopping veggies that filled the refrigerator.
The lower sleeping area is perfect for another couple or small family.
In other words, the photos on VRBO can't adequately portray the beauty and the spaciousness of it. And don't miss the outdoor shower. The best shower we ever experienced. We all would stay here again. The drive to the house was easy. All vehicles made it safely to the house.
The world at night is dark. Bring a headlamp if you want to walk after sunset.

Owner's Response: Thanks Deb. I'm glad the wedding went well, and I hope the bride got to surf!

This is one of the best places to get away from it all. Very relaxing. We had a such a grand view of the ocean into the valley, which in this place, you feel very privileged. We did hang out most of the time on the very large porch area that over looks the ocean. You can actually here the ocean waves from way up there! We did trek down into the valley to swim, checked out the Taro patches, and the water falls. There is an old tea house built in 70's that is now abandoned located in the back of the valley. The history of the valley is amazing. This vacation home is everything we expected and more. It was very clean and the beds were comfortable. Check out the cute Honokaa town on the way there. There is a great pizza place there to eat. If you like grass fed beef, there is a place called JJ's in Honokaa town. You feel like a whole new person when you leave, but believe me, you don't want to leave. We had such a wonderful time!

This has been the best rental house I've ever stayed in - and I've used VRBO rental houses for a couple of vacations already. The pictures definitely do not lie! The view was spectacular, the house looked like it was new - super clean, very well equipped with towels, kitchen supplies and a bbq and an overall very high standard. It was five of us staying there and we had a great time. If you go there's just one thing I would suggest: before heading down the very steep and windy road towards the house you will pass a shack with a guard. Let him know that you will be staying in one of the ridge houses or they will stop you each time and ask where you're going. That's because to reach the bottom of the valley you need a 4 wheel drive and apparently there's a lot of tourists who try and go down there in their rental sedans. The house shares the first part of the steep road but then climbs up towards the ridge again - so you don't need a 4x4 to get there.
So go ahead and book!!!

Owner's Response: Thanks SB. Hope you come again. I'm trying to post a video clip link to the site so anyone coming to the place can see the road. The sign is foreboding; the drive is fun. When I bought the place, I almost didn't even go to look at it. I'm glad I did because you have a very remote but accessible setting with the view almost to yourself (there are 3 other house on the ridge there). Look for an update or link to view.

Amazing house with breath taking views. You would pay double anywhere else for the view alone. Perfect location for sight seeing the entire island. It is about equal driving time to Kona or Hilo. The house itself Is comfortable, warm, and beautifully cared for. You are 3 minutes away from an adorable town - Honokaa. Antique shops, restaurants, and art galleries are there. The peace and tranquility you experience is perfect in our fast paced world. You have activities that are plentiful, or you can spend a day on the lanai reading, breathing in ocean air or napping with no one to disturb you. It is truly the perfect ocean retreat.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. There are plenty of activities as described by Kathy which I was not aware of. There is plenty of hiking to do in the valley, exoctic waterfalls and a great place to surf or play in the ocean, but I did not think of all the shops in Honokaa. I go to the best grass fed beef and fish store at J J's as you enter Honokaa coming from Waipio. Better prices than beef on the mainland.

Notes:
Located on the northern Hamakua Coast, the sacred Waipio Valley was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I, and an important center for political and religious life in Hawaii. Not only is 'The Valley of the Kings' an important site for Hawaiian history and culture, it's also a place of dramatic tropical beauty. This fertile valley is about one mile across and over five-miles deep, and surrounded by cliffs up to 2000-feet high. Waipio Valley was once the home of thousands of Native Hawaiians. Today, there are less than 100 residents living amongst the waterfalls, taro fields and rivers permeating the valley. Hawaii Island's tallest waterfall, Hiilawe Falls cascades down 1,300 feet in the back of Waipio. You can view the valley from the coastal Waipio Valley Overlook at the end of the Hamakua Heritage Corridor drive, or you can take a guided van tour, hike, or horseback ride to explore the hidden wonders within.
