Guestbook comments from the manager

From the minute we drove up to the house we were in love. As you pull into the driveway you have a spectacular view of the waipio valley and it only gets better when you get into the house. The house is fantastic, nothing has been overlooked. The lanai is the place to relax, enjoy the view and listen to the surf, although you can do this from inside as well. The furnishings were first class. The master bedroom is huge, the bed was super comfortable, and the sliders to the lanai (with great outdoor shower) was perfect. The master also has a huge walk in closet and bath with jacuzzi tub. The main part of the house was very warm ,with dining, living and kitchen(fully stocked) all in one area - plenty of room. As there were only 2 of us we didn't even go into the other wing, but the rooms were all large and nicely appointed. Everything is new and I can't say enough about how nice this house is and how much we felt at home there. There is also a great in-law suite downstairs. Ron - the property manager, was available for our few questions. Thanks Ron! The town of honokaa has a nice grocery store, gas stations, restaurants, and shops to poke around in, about 10-15min. drive. Lastly, the biggest draw for this home is the valley itself. It is truly a sacred place. I never tired of looking at the view - you can see from all over the house. You can explore by walking down, or driving if you dare. If you have a chance, stay in this house, you'll be happy you did.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers.

It's beautiful here

It's beautiful here

We were here for the holiday season and it was absolutely wonderful. I don't think you can get a better view of the Valley than from here. The owners were delightful, the kitchen is very well equipped, and the bedrooms are very comfortable. The house is close to the town center where there are a few restaurants, grocery store, and a hospital. We relaxed here for about 6 days, going down to the Valley everyday to enjoy the black sand beach. (You must get a 4x4!) You definitely have to go to the beach, it's amazingly beautiful, especially with the Valley in the backdrop. Words can't describe it.

After a day in the sun, we rested up in the house on a very large patio, grilled some food, and waited for the stars to arrive every night. It's simply serene. We would highly recommend this house for a relaxing holiday. If you have kids, the backyard may be a little dangerous because the cliff is not fenced, but we had kids from 1 yr to 4 yrs and they were fine with supervision. We hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did.

Owner's Response: About the 4 x 4, it is not necessary to get to the house, but if you make frequent trips to the valley or take a lot of boggie boards or surfboards then it is good to get one. Ask about tips on doing so, as there are some good reasonable options. If you want some of the locals to give you tours of the valley then mention that as well. Mahalo for the review, and come again.

Unbelievable view

  • 4 of 5
Our family of 6 spent our last three nights in Hawaii in this remote and beautiful home overlooking the Waipio Valley. The view from the deck is absolutely spectacular. The house was also very nice on the interior with four bedrooms and ceiling fans in every room. The house does get quite hot during the day, but it cools off nicely after dark. If you are out during the day as we were, it is not a problem. However, we did have a couple minor issues with the house. The first is the remote location and that is our fault. We didn't realize just how far away from civilization we were going. The house is 10 miles from the nearest town and over 40 minutes to a town with many restaurant choices. We also had a morning zipline excursion booked on the Kohala coast, which looked to be 15-20 minutes away on a map. It is totally on us for not knowing that you can't cross the Waipio Valley. We had to make a 90 minute drive around. We also had a number (dozens) of small winged bugs in one of the bedrooms. I don't know if they were coming in through the screen due to the light being on or if there was some sort of infestation. We knew we were in the country and we're pretty hard to shake, but it would be a bigger deal to some.

We would definitely recommend this home if you are looking for a truly beautiful getaway in a remote setting.

Owner's Response: I'll be there the next two weeks looking for bugs. The location is central, but the Island is big. You are half way between Kona and Volcano so you can travel either place if the views and beach are not enticing enough.

Perfect setting for relaxation

  • 5 of 5
This was the best selection that we could have made for our 10-day vacation. It's easy to get to Kona or Hilo or anyplace else on the island. The location is private and feels remote, but not isolated. The view is fantastic. We enjoyed hours of just relaxing and looking across the valley and down to the black sand beach. The house had everything we needed so we just had to bring the groceries. One word of advice...watch the video showing how to find it from the Waipio overlook. I'm glad I did. It's not dangerous in the least, but the last 100 yards would be difficult to follow with only written directions. Once you see where to go, it's no problem at all for any vehicle.

A Week of Peace

  • 5 of 5
My daughter lives in nearby Honokaa. Our family stayed at the Waipio house during the wedding fun.
A great space to prepare and then rest in. The deck overlooks the beach down below. This deck is enclosed and is massive. Large table to eat at, a hammock and more furniture. If there will be as many as 8-10 in your group, you wont feel crowded. A modern, clean and overly stocked kitchen contained all the needed utensils to prepare food for the wedding. Four friends worked easily together chopping veggies that filled the refrigerator.
The lower sleeping area is perfect for another couple or small family.
In other words, the photos on VRBO can't adequately portray the beauty and the spaciousness of it. And don't miss the outdoor shower. The best shower we ever experienced. We all would stay here again. The drive to the house was easy. All vehicles made it safely to the house.
The world at night is dark. Bring a headlamp if you want to walk after sunset.

This is by far one of the best vacations ever!

  • 5 of 5
This is one of the best places to get away from it all. Very relaxing. We had a such a grand view of the ocean into the valley, which in this place, you feel very privileged. We did hang out most of the time on the very large porch area that over looks the ocean. You can actually here the ocean waves from way up there! We did trek down into the valley to swim, checked out the Taro patches, and the water falls. There is an old tea house built in 70's that is now abandoned located in the back of the valley. The history of the valley is amazing. This vacation home is everything we expected and more. It was very clean and the beds were comfortable. Check out the cute Honokaa town on the way there. There is a great pizza place there to eat. If you like grass fed beef, there is a place called JJ's in Honokaa town. You feel like a whole new person when you leave, but believe me, you don't want to leave. We had such a wonderful time!

You can find some additional info about the area at dannat.net/waipio. An intro video shows how easy it is to get to the house.

There are two different horseback groups in the valley and both go through streams and are more relaxed and free with your use of the horses. A favorite of my girls.

There are boggy boards and a surfboard if you want to try the waves, an intermediate wave beach but favorite of locals.

Local guided tours of the valley can be arranged. Multiple trails so be sure and bring your hiking shoes, water shoes.

Notes:
Located on the northern Hamakua Coast, the sacred Waipio Valley was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I, and an important center for political and religious life in Hawaii. Not only is 'The Valley of the Kings' an important site for Hawaiian history and culture, it's also a place of dramatic tropical beauty. This fertile valley is about one mile across and over five-miles deep, and surrounded by cliffs up to 2000-feet high. Waipio Valley was once the home of thousands of Native Hawaiians. Today, there are less than 100 residents living amongst the waterfalls, taro fields and rivers permeating the valley. Hawaii Island's tallest waterfall, Hiilawe Falls cascades down 1,300 feet in the back of Waipio. You can view the valley from the coastal Waipio Valley Overlook at the end of the Hamakua Heritage Corridor drive, or you can take a guided van tour, hike, or horseback ride to explore the hidden wonders within.
