The enchanting magic about Spirit on the Water, sitting 100 feet above the Caribbean, is how seamlessly it blends into the ocean below. The infinity edge pool becomes one with the waves that extend to the jagged edges of the British Virgin Islands in the far distance. Along the way, are small islands, scattered everywhere, adding breathtaking drama to the ocean’s architecture. Music from our outdoor sound system will get you dancing on the deck or on the dance floor in the pool (yes – IN the pool). We’ll be here to welcome you as you melt away the tropical heat under the shade of palm trees growing up through our deck. You will soon to discover that there’s much more to Spirit on the Water than meets the eye! A private secluded walkway along the oceanfront hillside leads to one of the most beautiful infinity pools anywhere, two stunning bedroom suites and a huge living/dining room area, all with direct access to the pool deck. There is a complete indoor/outdoor kitchen, a barbecue pit, 1000 square feet of coral stone decking with palm trees growing through it, orchids, hummingbirds and tree frogs. Spirit on the Water offers you peace and tranquility, spectacular uninterrupted views down island to St. John and the British Virgin Islands, unequaled sunrises and star-filled night skys. The Great Room opens on to the pool deck and is furnished with a large desk and a flat screen TV with Dish Network. Used for additional sleeping or lounging are two hanging twin beds and a very nice Danish teak daybed that converts to a Queen Size when necessary. There are a host of board games and DVDs and a dining area with seating for 6 to 8. And all you see is the pool, the ocean and islands scattered in the distance. The Dream Suite opens onto a large deck with lounge chairs overlooking the pool and the ocean. With it's en suite bathroom and a drop down shower with ocean views, a Duxianna queen bed with soft linens, a flat screen TV with Dish Network, a Sonos stereo system in your room along with a bookshelf full of great reads, you may never want to leave your suite. There is also a twin size 18th century day bed for additional sleeping or lounging in the Dream Suite! The Blue Room opens onto a smaller deck adjoining the pool and also looks out over the ocean. Besides the really comfortable queen bed there is a twin size bed all overlooking the pool out onto the ocean. The bathroom for the Blue Room is just around the corner and has a skylight in the shower! Both bedrooms are air-conditioned and have blackout curtains (neither of which get used very often because of the ocean breeze that comes from the East and the beauty that comes from the landscape - you probably won't want to block any of it out). Spirit on the Water has a full kitchen just behind the great room that has everything you may need to prepare meals during your stay: refrigerator, freezer, stove and microwave. Unless of course you like to Barbecue, then you’ll just need to step out onto the deck and use the proane grill, of course! You will be happy to know that we have an automatic generator so should the electricity go out (it sometimes happens on the island) we've got you covered. We also have a water filtering system that turns our collected rain water into the most delicious water ever. Its filtered twice and run through a UV sanitation system,so yes, we can all drink the water! There is also wireless Internet throughout house. Oh, and there are several 'Mosquito Magnets' spread around the property so bugs aren't a problem!!! The glass tiled swimming pool is 32’ x 16’ with an infinity edge and it is a salt water pool that is solar heated most of the year. There is also an 8ft x 5ft. ledge that is only 18 inches deep for little people to play on. There are plenty of pool floats, outdoor speakers and orbit chairs to provide for your maximum enjoyment of one of the greatest pools you will find anywhere!!!! This is truly a one of a kind place. It’s funky, it’s fun, it’s private and it’s full of spirit! The owners or house managers live on site (in a completely separate living area) and are there to help you should you have any questions or need recommendations on anything from beaches to boat trips to restaurants and bars. If you would like to hold your wedding, your reception or a private party here please speak with June about additional event fees. To learn more visit our website at www.SpiritontheWater.com. And don't forget to check out our other listing, The Luxury Loveshack On The Water which is just next door... in case you need additional space and would like the option to house more guests.
“What do you mean I can’t have fun all the time?”
I wouldn’t be who I am today if I followed all the rules. In fact, it’s because I refused to do what I was told that I’ve had this huge array of experiences. Ok, I wouldn’t say that living out of my car in Hawaii was the best idea I ever had but it sure made me appreciate life and know for sure what I didn’t want!
I like fresh air, warm turquoise water, and open spaces for miles. I like young people and old people, little people and big people as long as I can be who I am around them. I like relationships with no yelling, conversations that get me thinking, characters in books that I can imagine being and I like mashed potatoes and gravy no matter what time of day.
If I had a choice whether or not to stop on the side of the road to help rescue a dog or keep driving to get to an appointment on time, I’d be late for my appointment. But that is about the only thing that would make me late. I like keeping my word.
There has never been a time in my life when I wasn’t interested in what other people were thinking, where they were ‘coming from’, and where they were going as a result of all their experiences.
There also has never been a time in my life when I wasn’t looking at who I am, what I want, how I’m going to get it, what it’s going to look like when I do so I can share it with others.
So, that’s my life. Except for the part I left out about my 5 husbands, my 2 French kids or my job as a Chief Intuitive Officer all while moving over the years from Texas to California to Hawaii to Connecticut to Paris to New York City and finally in 2004 to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands where I live very happily today with my husband our four dogs, four cats and assortment of lizards, iguana’s and tree frogs. Who could ask for anything more?
Did I mention I like swimming in warm turquoise water?
Ed is an investment banker, Chinese art dealer, music nutcase, father of 4, grandfather of 5 and partner of 1.
June & Ed Miller purchased this house in 2004
We fell in love with the property the minute we saw it. Completely secluded at the end of a 1/4 mile drive in a private estate on the most beautiful stretch of coastline in St. Thomas, Spirit on the Water is also graced by the trade winds 12 months a year. We have transformed the house itself, adding the pool and decking and a second story Master suite to create our perfect home and love sharing it with others. We have incorporated our love of music into a sound system that allows you to play your music in your space, or share the thousands of songs we have available.
We like to have fun and expect you to have a blast. Period. Part of our joy in sharing this unique property is introducing new people to the secrets we have learned about the island over the last 14 years that casual visitors don't normally discover. Maps and directions are available to and from all the popular island destinations and since we are so close to many of them (Red Hook, Magen's Bay (voted one of the top ten beaches in the world by Conde Naste') or our famous Mahogany Run Golf Course, you may want to explore! Directions to the lesser known gems are also there for you.
We also make sure that there will always be someone nearby to answer any of your questions about the house, the pool, music system or the animals. They will be cared for by us or a caretaker and can easily be kept out of the main house if that's a concern.... but you might just discover that they are one of the main attractions!
There are really no words that can express the beauty and tranquility that you will experience as soon as you set foot on this property. The pictures are great but can do no justice to the actual site. Many days we spent lounging by the pool and exploring the private beaches. Most nights we spent grilling by the pool and lounging in the most comfortable over-sized chairs. A few days were spent off property as we took the ferry over to St. John and then a short drive to Magen's Bay. However, we were so comfortable and content with everything the property had that we really never felt an urge to leave. The worst part of the trip was leaving but I know we will visit again!!!!!!
We would highly recommend staying at Spirit on the Water. After a beach wedding, we held our reception on the beautiful deck overlooking the sea. It was the perfect setting, we, as well as our guests, marveled in the view.
Do not fear the road!
While it's not the two-lane type-road in the city we're from, the road to Spirit on the Water is not to be feared. I was concerned about the road after reading another review, but after driving it once (we stayed for three days), there was nothing to fear. It's a typical island road that taxis will happily drive down.
Ed and June are the best kind of people. They made us feel right at home and were fantastic hosts. We are very thankful to them for all the help they provided during our wedding weekend.
Did we mention how serene and outright amazing the view is! Spirit on the Water is truly a unique experience - June is an amazing artist! - one that we'll never forget and would recommend to anyone looking for an amazing stay.
We cannot sat enough great things about our stay. Truly, it is impossible to imagine a more spectacularly stunning setting with hosts who are as warm, gracious, helpful, accommodating, and lovely as Ed and June. We visited with our twin daughters who at the time of the trip were just over a year and while this isn’t necessarily a super baby-friendly set-up, our hosts were as baby friendly as could be from giving us all natural sunscreen and bug spray to arranging a great sitter for us so we could enjoy a day of kayaking and snorkeling to just clearly being people-people all around and extending that warmth to our girls. Ed and June were gracious hosts in every imaginable way – telling us about the best restaurants on the island and making sure we got great treatment when we went there (everyone knows this couple and are eager to make sure you are treated well!), giving us great tips on the best places to find great deals on jewelry, suggestions on hikes and beaches . . . the list truly just goes on and on. From the moment we stepped out of our rental car (four wheel drive as they suggested worked perfectly) and were greeted by friendly dogs and an offer to share a bottle of wine to the sad minute we stepped back into that car to head to the airport as June ran out to give us the gift of something I had admired in the rental, we could not have had better, kinder, more attentive treatment.
And then there’s the rental itself. WOW. I have stayed at a lot of nice places, but a view like this with an infinity pool like that is just incredibly special. June is a designer and the house really takes full advantage of the setting with huge windows looking out onto the most gorgeous ocean view littered with islands and birds overhead. I love to swim and that infinity pool could not have been more ideal where I took long, luxurious swims in a deep, continuous pool and where out little ones could stand and play on a little ledge made especially for their grandkids. This place is perfection.
It’s not the most private place in the world and if that’s important to you, this probably isn’t your place. While it’s (at least for us) pricey, I do think it’s actually a great value. There is no doubt that we will return – I am dreaming of that pool, that view, and the taste of fresh seafood grilled on the deck as I look up to the incredible view of zillions of stars and count my blessings.
This property exceeded our expectations and was exactly as described in the posting. Our family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids) were able to relax at the property while also enjoying the island. It has an amazing view and Ed and June are great hosts!
A group of us were visiting the USVI on vacation for the first time and we were there for 4 days or so. The Spirit On The Water was a FANTASTIC choice not only for a location to call "home" for the time we were there but also for the warmth and incredible hospitality of the owners!!!! Both Ed and June were extremely welcoming from the moment that we arrived, they were always eager to lend a helping hand, to suggest a place to visit and to provide directions whenever we needed it.
The house was impeccably clean and organized!! The location and the view are absolutely breathtaking... in fact, I think I could've spent the entire vacation just basking in the sun on the incredible infinity pool and deck that they have there!!!
I would absolutely highly recommend staying there and making friends with Ed and June... they're great people, and they provide a great place with great services above and beyond ANYTHING that you might expect in a five start hotel :)
This is a wonderfully spacious villa with a fabulous patio and pool, but even more important it has an aura, a feeling of peace and serenity, which make it a privilege to be stayng there.
Let's get the problems out of the way up front. You need a Jeep to be comfortable driving to the villa - half of the steep zig-zag track is paved, but the other half is heavily potholed, and you need to be a reasonably confident driver to enjoy the experience.
Next, you need to know that the villa is a wing of the owners' home and the main living room is adjacent to the owners' kitchen which also overlooks the pool. There are curtains between, but the arrnagement does take a short while to get used to.
And lastly, the villa kitchen is open to the elements, which again is strange at first but (so I am told) very "island"!
But those are small things when you stack them up against the plusses. The most wonderful view, 200 feet or so above the surf crashing into the cliffs, pelicans flying in formation past your bedroom window, the most gorgeous sunrises and sunsets I have ever seen in my life, the bigest private pool I have ever swum in ... my most enduring memory is floating on my back in the pool late one night and gazing up at the most intensely bright stars I have ever seen studding the black sky ... two wonderfully comfortable bedrooms, a small but very well equipped kitchen, a patio with an excellent outdoor grill and superbly comfortable deck furniture and hammocks.
Every day was a joy, not least because the owners June and Ed are warm and friendly people who could not do enough to make sure we had everything we needed. They had insisted that they meet us at the airport so that we could follow their car in the dark to the villa - and I'm real glad we took up that offer! They were a mine of helpful information, and we had a ball on our last night when they invited us to join them for a drink and (as it turned out) a nostalgic evening of music. The villa is furnished very much in June's style - quirky and serene, stylish and welcoming.
This was without doubt the most exceptional holiday we have ever had, and our first (but not last) visit to St Thomas. We found the island and its people welcoming and exotic, and Spirit on the Water was just our small, temporary piece of paradise in this wonderful island.
