JOY IN THE JORDAAN

  • 5 of 5
Had a lovely stay in Frances's house. It's in a lively area with plenty of bars and restaurants on your doorstep. The room is small but adequate and there was a fold up table if you fancied bringing back a takeaway. Frances is a nice friendly lady and is always available for advice. We would have no hesitation in recommending Bed and Bikes and hope to go back again ourselves next year.

GREAT EXPERIENCE!

This location provided us with everything we could have ever needed. Great location and great service. The bikes allowed us to see so much more of the beautiful city. Would highly recommend.

BEAUTIFUL AREA, GREAT STAY

  • 4 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay at Frances' flat. The room was plenty big, clean, with everything you'd need (tea, coffee, fridge, tv, linens etc.). The attached shower and sink area was nice and big as well. The toilet is across the hall but we had no problems using it as we pleased. Frances offered us use of her bikes and was very accommodating. We got to party with some of the people who live upstairs on Kings day and had an absolute blast. The area is beautiful and very easy to see the city from., lots of shops, bars, restaurants and right by the canals. We were very glad it was our home base for the five days we were there. Only suggestion would be to put a lock on the actual room door, not just the hallway leading to the room. But otherwise this was a great place to call home while we visited Amsterdam! Thank you Frances!

BETTER THAN THE HILTON

  • 5 of 5
I stayed 2 nights at Frances her Bed & Bikes and I'm sure I'll book it again when I'm back in Amsterdam. Frances is the most sweetest landlord ever. The bed is nice and comfy, the location perfect (i love the Jordaan ;)..Everything you need will be in there, including 2 real Amsterdam-styled bikes.

Frances will show you around, give you lots of great tips (what to do, where to have diner, etc..) But only if you like it - otherwise you'll have your privacy!

Five thumbs up! Hope 2 be back one day.

SMOKING ROOM AND BROKEN BIKES

  • 1 of 5
I really hesitated to write this review, I don't like to leave bad reviews, but here is the review I wish someone else had written and I had read before booking my time at this B&B.

The room is advertised as non-smoking, but the truth is the owner is a VERY HEAVY smoker and it's impossible to enter the apartment without walking through a wall of smoke fumes. It may be true that no one actually smokes IN the room, but the smell of smoke is all through the room, the bath and especially the hallway you must walk through to the toilet. It was a bit like having a room in a bar, this is NOT a smoke free environment, please don't be fooled.

It's a very tiny room, which is to be expected (everything is small in Amsterdam) but it was entirely airless. It was almost impossible to get any fresh air in the room as the only window was a small transom above a door.

If you can handle smoke, no problem. But if you're asthmatic or don't like smoke, this is NOT the room for you!

Second, the bikes were unusable upon our arrival. One bike had a flat (an entirely non-fixable tube which had to be replaced) and the other was so rusted that the seat was not adjustable. When we took the bikes to a local shop the owner was very helpful and replaced the tube (which he said was VERY old) and replaced the rusted bolt on the other bike. There are non-working brake cables and myriad non-working tiny lights hanging off of the bike handlebars, a testament to the 'slap something else on it, but don't fix it' school of bike ownership that seems to be practiced by the owner.

When I mentioned this I was accused - rather rudely - of wanting a "rocket bike"

No, I don't want a rocket bike. I'm happy with a typical one-speed cruiser with foot brakes. But when bikes are advertised as a draw for the room, one would hope they'd at least be in working condition. We took a full morning of our vacation and €13 to get the bikes up to riding shape at a local bike shop.

I'm happy that the other folks who stayed here had a good time, my feeling is that perhaps they didn't mind cigarette smoke in their room and didn't need to use the bikes much.

As far as Frances's charms, they escaped us - but everyone has different reactions to folks, I'm sure she's a lovely person if you don't mention the bad condition of her bikes.

If you don't want a smoky, airless room with broken bikes, you'd do better to find a different room and rent bikes by the day as you need them.

Owner's Response: "you can't win them all" ... starting off with this, as your review is terrible - while 25 guests just gave B&Bikes all stars possible. My feedback:
a) during your stay on daytime i wasn't at home. There are
2! doors in between your section and mine which are closed.
So smoke problems aren't there, I guess Amsterdam pollution
b) bikes, amsterdam bikes are free. Tires were ok. But it happens sometimes flat tire is there, speciallty with heavy load. Why
didn't you mention I PAID for repair?? Not very nice to say
you were paying 13 euro while I paid you 15 euro.
c) sleeping and biking for 2 for 60 euros: what do you expect
the Hilton? Renting a bike in Amsterdam is 15 euro a day!
d) No positive feedback: staying a week, with easter you were
gone: Frances cleaned your room, clean sheets etc!
e) You were annoyed as you wanted to stay a night longer
which wasn't available.
I advice you to have a more positive attitude towards life
in general - good luck
