CENTRALLY LOCATED IN HILO, REED'S ISLAND - OVERLOOKING WATERFALLS

Hilo House Rental Photos and Description

Spacious well-appointed home with everything you need just moments from downtown Hilo. With three bedrooms and two baths, this Reed's Island home is a wonderful place to stay while you enjoy all that the Big Island has to offer.

Spacious well-appointed home with everything you need just moments from downtown Hilo. With three bedrooms and two baths, this Reed's Island home is a wonderful place to stay while you enjoy all that the Big Island has to offer.

The master bedroom with its ensuite bathroom opens up to a small lanai that's perfect for enjoying your morning coffee. Later, enjoy the large family-sized lanai off the open living/dining/kitchen open floorplan central area. The front lanai is large, covered and ready for enjoyment.

Behind the house is the Wailuku River and its many waterfalls. You can see several small ones from the back lanai. For privacy, across the river is a large undeveloped parcel so you can sit out and enjoy this all to yourself if you so choose.

Down the street are pieces of Hilo history like the Shipman house. The Reed's Island area has always been a highly prized neighborhood with an eclectic mix of old and new homes - no two alike.

From the house, you could walk or take short drive into downtown Hilo. On the way you will pass the Hilo Public Library, with its historic stones (the Naha Stone and the Pinao Stone). Because of the role the Naha Stone played in the history of Hawaii, its worth a visit. An ancient legend said that the one who moved the stone would rule all the islands, but if you took the challenge and failed, you were killed. Kamehameha took that challenge and succeeded - and he did rule all the islands.

Further downtown is a wide assortment of shops and restaurants where you can find everything from high-end fancy chopsticks to amazing art. The food varies from "burger and fries" to higher-end meals sourced with local ingredients. Downtown Hilo is something you truly should experience.

WOW!

  • 5 of 5
Great house and location! Had a wonderful stay despite hurricane Iselle. Fortunately Hilo wasn't hit as bad as Puna. Incredible view of Waikulu River (It rose up to the vegetation after Iselle and was quite brown). The house was very clean upon our arrival and had everything we needed in the kitchen and bathrooms. Very good cross ventilation. We were quite comfortable ( 2 adults and 3 teens). The photos were accurate-WOW factor 7 when we arrived. It is less than an hour to Volcanoes National Park (we went 2 days in a row, the park pass is good for 7) Hike the Kilauea Iki trail and drive the Chain of Craters road. Stay till dark and see the glow from Halema'uma'u crater. Drive to Waipio lookout and hike down the STEEP 4wd road to see Hi'ilawe falls. We drove from rain forest to alpine at Mauna Kea (Onizuka visitor's center) in an hour. The temp. fell 30 degrees. Climb the short and easy Pu'u Kalepeamoa cone to see Maui at sunset. It was socked in but we were patient and rewarded with an incredible experience! Great sushi served in Bento boxes at restaurant Miwa in Hilo shopping center. Loco Moco at Ken's. Buy some produce at Hilo farmer's market and Hawaii beef burgers at KTA and cook them on the new BBQ on the lanai. Visit 'Imiloa astronomy center (Mauna Kea between earth and sky in the planetarium), the Lyman museum, Pana'ewa zoo, Pacific tsunami museum, catch a flick at the Kress theater and a milkshake at Kozmic Kones (you can walk to it). Eat at grandma's place in Honoka'a before you go to the Waipio lookout. Coconut Island and Lili'uokalani park were very pleasant as was the Banyan drive. all in all we had a wonderful stay in Wailele Nalo and would definitely recommend this house to anyone with 5 or more travelers. Thanks and hope to return some day.

What a great alternative to staying at a hotel!

We had a surprise during our stay: a brand new huge BBQ grill appeared on the back patio while we were out and about - Wow!

We had a small issue and the office responded immediately.

My two tiny situations were that the master bed is so high, we had to buy a step stool so my Mom could get up on the bed. The other is that the stackable washer/dryer is so high I couldn't read the settings on the dryer; my Husband had to come downstairs to press the buttons.

My only complaint is that our bed had a few springs that spring back and startle you a bit while sleeping/relaxing.

The house is well-maintained and stocked with basic essentials. It is equipped with modern stainless steel appliances for our comfort (coffee maker and toaster were a plus). They also provide "Off" spray for mosquitoes, and citronella candles for the patio, dish soap and sponge, hand soap for the bathrooms, umbrellas, beach mats, large fan, clock radios, lamps, hanger, towels and wash cloths, spices, reusable bags for grocery shopping, even a land line phone!

Lovely, functional public areas, but....

  • 3 of 5
The public areas (living/dining/kitchen) are well designed and very comfortable and attractive. The deck has comfortable seating overlooking a stream with many small waterfalls. However, there are problems, many of which could be solved with little money and attention (see below), but two were serious. One of the features of the house that attracted us were the French doors off the master bedroom onto the deck. However, those doors have no screens, making them useless! There was no furniture at that end of the deck, too. The other problem which may be solved only by warning renters. We tried pulling into the left side of the carport and badly scrapped the bottom of the car. It is true we had 4 people and luggage aboard, but we were in a standard size sedan. Even when I unloaded everybody by the driver we were still scrapping. By myself I could just get the car into the right side of the carport. The minor problems (solved easily with a little money and planning): The kitchen is inadequately equipped (e.g., only 4 dinner plates, no serving platters, no dish towels, no indication where the garbage disposal switch is). The two other bedrooms (beside the master bedroom) are very sparsely equipped and the queen beds are not good.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed review. While we don't know if we can address all of them quickly, it does give us some idea of where to focus.

The owner lived here for a number of years, without a screen on the bedroom doors. I'm not sure why you stay that without a screen they are useless. We will discuss that with the owner, however.

We will try to improve the warning about the scraping risk for cars pulling in. We had never encountered that ourselves, but we'll work on warning people.

Adding more utensils, and cutlery and dishes is not a problem. We can get that handled right away.

Yes, we agree that the other two bedrooms could use some additional decorating. We always keep our eyes open for furniture and decorations for the vacation rentals, and just haven't found things we like for those bedrooms yet. But we will.

Beds themselves are very subjective. What might be a 'good' bed to you may be 'horrible' to us. The beds are less than 6 months old and we haven't seen any other complaints about them. That being said, we will definitely pick up a couple of nice foam mattress pad/covers to help make them more enjoyable.
