In 2002 David (DJ) and Harriet George settled in a most beautiful natural setting on the heights of Mount Rodney.
Their superb location, DJ's classic Caribbean/European cooking and the couple's genuine warm welcome, have made their Heights Cafe/Bar the dining venue to visit in North Grenada - very highly rated nationally - judge for yourself.
The George's classically simple holiday cottage, a calm haven in an exquisite setting, provides you with a tranquil and relaxed base for exploration of this enchanting area ..... and with the famed Heights hospitality immediately available should you wish.
You'll have complete privacy, yet with immediate access to your family hosts.
We have no hidden extras - rates include daily housekeeping and provision of a local cell-phone, together with recommendations and transport (if you wish) from your on-site hosts.
We invite you to relax in this breathtakingly beautiful location and to enjoy the Caribbean sunshine, with its magnificent dawn and dusk, and our constant cooling breezes, whilst absorbing the panoramic view over the meeting of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
Some background: The Heights Cafe/Bar, set high on Mount Rodney, has built up a fine reputation as one of the leading venues for locally produced high quality food - all is prepared by DJ, born in the parish and now back home again after many years in the UK.
The cottage that DJ and Harriet have had built, after nine years in their dramatically beautiful setting, incorporates all of their experience of living in this unique location. The view is breath-taking and the cooling breezes are a joy. Your cottage is a calm haven, designed to take maximum advantage of these great natural blessings.
Your veranda is your outdoor living area - blending seamlessly with the calm and cool blue and white classic cottage interior - ice cold drinks from your capacious fridge - taking in the breath-taking Caribbean panorama ...... a little music perhaps .......feet up and relax. www.grenadaheights.co.uk
Enjoy meeting with the local community: Your cottage is in a completely private area, but only a very short stroll to the intimate open-sided timber building that is The Heights Cafe/Bar. Breakfast, lunch, a beer, a Heights rum punch or a glass of Sauvignon Blanc ................. as you wish.
As long term residents of this very special part of unspoilt North Grenada, your hosts are well known locally. Their cafe/bar clientèle is cosmopolitan and you will meet, if you wish, with a wide cross section of Grenadians plus a truly international range of other visitors. D's cooking is phenomenal ........ and very much appreciated.
Savour a sundowner as you greet the dusk ..... watch the movement - and the lights - of the Ocean liners as they pass along the living Caribbean panorama that is yours to enjoy
Some places to go: When you're ready to explore a little, maybe visit Sauteurs - stroll along the ocean side and perhaps have a cold drink en route at Agnes' bar. Sauteurs itself is a most welcoming town with internet cafe, two banks, two schools, varied bars and eating places and most of all an integrated and family based community where you'll be made very welcome.
A walk down to the five star Petite Anse Hotel will give you the opportunity to meet visitors from Europe, Scandinavia, the US and Canada and again you'll be made very welcome by UK owners Philip and Annie Clift and their local staff.
Slightly further afield - you must visit Bathway beach - jaw-droppingly beautiful, almost deserted and totally safe bathing - Belmont Estate, Grenada's prime eco-tourist estate, is a great day out, Rivers rum distillery might also appeal .............
Harriet and DJ will be pleased to discuss and recommend............ the Heights view and veranda are there to welcome you back after your day out
Really good food. Thank you for your kindness and hospitality. Had a really relaxing time here.
We have stayed at The Holcott at The Heights for the last 4 years, ie every year since 2010 in a January through to February - a real testimony to its beauty in all respects (we are very picky). This was a real discovery after staying for 10 years in the South and just visiting the North of the island on day trips. What a gem of a place this is; friendly owners, amazing location with views of the stunning Grenadines, delicious meals courtesy of the lovely DJ, gorgeous comfortable cottage with everything you need (high quality bedding so welcome), lots to see and do in the area and everyone is so friendly and helpful. The guest book bears testimony to the hosts Harriet and DJ and the efforts they put in to ensure you always have the holiday you wish for the most. We can't bear the thought of not spending time at The Holcott each winter!
Our favourite things to do are: breakfast on the balcony soaking up the view, watching the pelicans from David's Bay, walking the beach to Sauteurs, evening meal at The Heights with DJ's rum punch and Harriett’s sorrel drink, Harriet's packed lunch for trips to Sandy Island, afternoons on the veranda reading our books, Sundays at Bathway Beach listening to the Reggae bands and eating at Aggie's or Elo's, buying chocolate (which doesn't melt in the heat) at Belmont Plantation, especially the rum truffles, discovering roads we have not driven on before! We could go on and on ....... We strongly recommend you go and try this truly unique experience, be warned you will want to return. Diana and Malcolm Wetherell Terry, North Yorkshire, England
The Heights was exactly as described. Clean, well maintained, well furnished, and relaxing. The owners are great hosts and dinner meals cooked by DJ are not to be missed. If you like your own private retreat that is just a short distance from town and nearby beaches, this is the place. North Grenada is much more relaxing and laid back than St. George's. A day hiking with a guide (Telfor) is highly recommended and can be arranged through Harriet. Other day trips are visits to a rum factory, Belmont Estate, and Grand Etang National Park. Would definitely stay here again.
I could not agree more with the above review. We would concur totally with what Ja51 has written; The Heights is a real gem and the most lovely and relaxing place to visit or ideally stay in. Harriet and DJ could not be more helpful with plenty of ideas about what to do and see locally, island history etc - and they are also great company to sit and chat to over a glass of wine or beer. At the same time they also keep their distance and leave you lots of privacy - it's their home but at times you really feel as if you have the place to yourselves. We totally loved our stay, there's plenty to do and see around here and Harriet and DJ are a mine of local information and colour. Halcott is simply delightful and beautifully furnished with what must be one of the best views on the island across the ocean to Carriacou and Petit Martinique amongst others. The food in the little outdoor restaurant is excellent (as is the array of Penguin paperbacks!), locally sourced and freshly cooked - and very reasonably priced compared to prices in the south. We definitely want to go back and would recommend it unreservedly - our only concern being that if it gets more popular and more people 'discover' it, it may be harder to secure a place! Selflessly (!), we'd still thoroughly recommend it - Harriet and DJ are so good at what they do clearly derive pleasure from it so they deserve to succeed massively. We would love to go back ....
This was our first visit to Grenada and having booked a weeks accommodation in Prickly Bay we wanted to sample the northern part of the island.
How lucky we were when we discovered The Heights - Holcott.
From their initial welcome through to the morning of our departure Harriet and DJ were perfect hosts.
They were there to cook, answer questions and advise when needed but otherwise kept a discreet distance never compromising our privacy.
The Holcott is comfortably equipped with a marvellous view over the Grenadines.
The nearby town, Sauteurs, where you can obtain all of the basics is within walking distance although we would recommend a hire car to fully experience what this part of the island has to offer.
Quite simply, if you are going to Grenada, you have to stay here!.
When you turn off the main road and drive up the track to 'The Heights' you do wonder what you are going to find at the other end but as soon as you arrive at 'The Heights' Harriet is there to greet you with 'Welcome to the Heights'. Then you get out of the car and look at the beautiful view. After that you can concentrate on 'Holcott'. The pretty blue and white cottage is well thought out and has all you need. If you do not want to cook in the evening or even do not want to make your own breakfast DJ and Harriet will do it for you. The food is good and the hosts perfect. Although the restaurant is small it seems well known for good food. We also tried 'Almost Paradise' just up from The Heights, for lunch one day and that was good too for a change. All in all we spent a happy eight days in Holcott and would rcommend it to anyone. One thing you do need to be aware of is that it is in the north of the island and is over an hour from the airport and if you want to visit the main town, you will need a car.
This place has it all: secluded, quiet setting, incredible ocean views, nice tasteful accomodation, if requested great food, and most of all the nicest hosts you could wish for. Harriet and DJ are dedicated to what they are doing, and what's more, most interesting and likeable people: We stayed over Christmas and couldn't have felt more at home.
Also, they'll recommed all kinds of other places of interest, restaurants etc. - we were never disppointed.
The cottage is on top of a slope leading down to the town of Sauteurs, a lively and non-touristy sea town. The view will overwhelm you again and again, and the surrounding area is rich in all kinds of original beauty - lots of rather untouched woods, beaches, waterfalls, plantations.
The North of Grenada has not, however, a very developed touristical infrastructure. There are minibusses, but for less adventurous or comfort-seeking travellers renting a car is recommended if they'd like to get around a bit.
The Heights is located in the beautiful unspoilt North of Grenada, away from the busy tourist centres of the South. Coastal and mountain breezes maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the year and the countryside is spectacular.
Stay at the Heights and you will experience the real Grenada - the local centre, Sauteurs, with its banks, bars, schools, and fish-market, provides a warm and genuine welcome as you meet the locals.
For a change you might wish to visit the local five star hotel, where the English hosts will again make you very welcome
