Overview

Merida House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedroom, 2 bathrooms in Merida's best plaza

Casa kuxtal (in mayan 'The house of life'), is a gorgeous 200 years old, recently renovated colonial house.

The house was fully furnished with exquisite taste with antiques of the region. It is situated in an unbeatable location; right in the most beautiful park of Merida in the famous calle 60: Santa Ana square. Casa Kuxtal is only two blocks from Paseo Montejo and walking distance to shops, restaurants, coffee shops, theatres and museums. Buy fresh groceries in the local market, have an ice cream in the square or have a stroll in front of historical mansions, right in front of your door!

Casa Kuxtal has all the amenities you need to make your stay in Merida unforgettable: colonial high-beamed ceilings -typical of old colonial houses-, a refreshing pool, a beautiful garden, an outdoor shower and a roof garden with a great view. Everything in Casa Kuxtal is environmentally friendly, we have a solar heater, energy saving appliances (induction stove), LED lights, solar lamps, and a green roof. To make your stay more comfortable, the house includes ceiling fans, AC in both rooms, cable TV, wireless internet, phone line and a cell phone for your use during your stay. The house also includes a BBQ, board games, books and a hammock to lay down and relax!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is perfect for a familiy wanting their privacy and comfort! However It will suit all of those seeking a nice vacation: from adventure seekers to romantic getaway! The backyard and the swimming pool make perfect sense when you come back from the daily exploration of Merida the surrounding region in the warm Yucatan wheather. The house is very well located just foot steps from the historical centre of Merida. It is just about an hour drive to the Mayan ruins of Chichen-Itza and Uxmal. It is also from just about an hour driving to the towns of Valladolid and the Celestun reserve!

My wife an I had a really nice stay.

Thanks friendly Esteban and Fernanda!

Nice house and nice location

  • 4 of 5
I was very happy to see that the home does look like the pics. The park next to the home has a nice market with several restaurants plus a few more restaurants on the street next to the park. Paseo de Montejo is a very short walk from the house. It takes about ten minutes to walk down calle 60 to get to the main plaza. It's also about a ten minute walk up calle 60 to fiesta Americana hotel (several chain car rentals there) if you decide to rent a car while there. I did rent a car for a few days and had no problem finding parking next to the church on calle 45. I enjoyed the small market on the corner of 60 and 45, the bakery on the other side of the park for breakfast items, the cafe two blocks north for quiche, and the grocery store two blocks south on 60. As for the house the one indoor and one outdoor bathroom worked well for me. The outdoor shower was terrific - I used it every day while there. The patio and pool areas are a nice place to spend some time. I didn't cook anything while there but the kitchen is nice and has a full set of cookware. The microwave and refrigerator were all I needed. The caretaker does not speak much English but he does carry a laptop with him and can pull that out to translate when needed. He was nice enough to schedule a taxi for us - something that would have been difficult with our less than stellar Spanish. Overall the house is nice, the price is nice, and it's a good location.

Very Cosy house!

Casa Kuxtal was the perfect place to stay for my week long trip. The location is ideal to discover downtown and many tour places are available in the area. The outside shower is not that bad and when I had a problem with one of the toilets the manager fixed it within a few hours. The pictures are not misleading. I have been to Merida many times and this place is a good deal.

Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5
What a lovely surprise Casa Kuxtal was! We just got back from five weeks there and it was a perfect place to come home to after a full day of touring. The rooms are much bigger than the photos suggest and it was perfectly located...the Santa Ana market right next door to the church for our fruits, vegtables and chicken, and a super market not even a block away on Calle 60. Add to that, two excellent bakeries near by (a French one right off Calle 60 on Calle 41) and a place to get fresh ground coffee also on Calle 60 and we were in heaven. The church bells of the Santa Ana church were glorious to hear each day and we could walk to all the events Merida has to offer every night.

Best for two people and for short stays

  • 2 of 5
I arrived in Merida planning to stay in Casa Kuxtal for 6 weeks. Communication with the owner was very good, he always got back to me quickly. I have been visiting Mexico, and have lived in Mexico for short periods of time, since the 1970's. I think I have realistic expectations. The location was very good. Calle 60 is a busy street, with lots of street noise, but this is true in most historic downtown homes. The location is convenient to the main square shopping and markets. The pasta tile floors are lovely, the white washed 18 feet ceilings and wooden doors and windows feel so uniquely Merida. The backyard is in poor condition and needs some work. The stepping stones are about 4" above the dirt level you can easily hurt yourself if you miss a step. There are weeds between the stepping stones. The pool edge is also higher than the dirt level, making it trecherous to use the clothes line which is necessary since there is no dryer. The maid hangs the sheets and towels on the clothes line once a week, then leaves. During rainy season you have to make sure and bring everything in to dry in the house draped on furniture if you want clean, dry towels and sheets. The description wasn't accurate in that the 2nd bathroom is outside near the laundry room and does not have a shower. When friends came to stay it was difficult for them to have to walk through the backyard in the dark (and sometimes the rain) to get to the guest bathroom. The outdoor shower is near the outdoor bathroom but not idea for showering at night or when it's raining. The solar heater necessitates letting the water run for 3-7 minutes for hot water. There were not enough pots and pans for four people to cook. The faucet in the kitchen leaked. There was no hot water in the kitchen and no water filter. I boiled water to wash the dishes. The armoires in the bedrooms are small and some of the space is taken with bedspreads and other household items. Not ideal for long stays. I rely on honest reviews from travelers and I know that several of the reviews on this home were written by the next door neighbor and friends of the owners who may have stayed, but if they did, they stayed as friends of the owners. This is very disappointing. This house would work best for two people staying for less than a week at a time.

Owner's Response: Dear Jane,
Casa Kuxtal was clearly not for you. You are the very first guest in 3 years that has given us a bad review. All our other guests have loved our house and truly appreciated its charm and magic.
It is not true that other reviews have been written by family or friends. There is absolutely no basis to make those claims. It is unfortunate that you did not enjoy the outdoor shower as many of our guests do. It is true that the hot water from the solar heater takes a few moments to flow, but that is a small price to pay for a sustainable alternative. It is a shame not everyone realizes that. It is also true that we do not have hot water in the kitchen, again, it is because all our heating is done by our solar system and to have hot water in the kitchen we would have needed to have a gas connection. As for your need to boil the water to wash dishes, this is not necessary in Mexico (regardless of what many foreigners might believe). It is unfortunate that you arrived while we were changing our plants in the garden, but we were switching from grass to a less water-thirsty option: a native plant that covers the ground. It is not a weed. This plant is taking a bit longer than expected to grow, and we have now planted more to speed up the covering the garden floor. Finally, it is also true that Rose, the lady that helps us clean the house (which is amazingly good at her job as many guest can testify) hangs the sheets outside the garden after washing them. I told her to do this as she has 5 kids to take care of and there is no need to wait to go home until they dry. We assume guests can do this little bit. And again, yes, we don't have a dryer (one of the most energy consuming households) as Merida has over 300 days a year of sunlight- the best free clean energy.
Sustainability comes with a few sacrifices, but in our experience most guests are happy to sacrifice small luxuries for the knowledge of supporting green tourism in our beautiful Yucatan.

During Jane stay we never received a complaint from the guest, and in fact received a complementary email about the home and our property manager from the same individual during the stay. Only after seeking reimbursement from the guest for 2 weeks was such a negative review posted. We stand by our newly renovated and outfitted home, and find the commentary to be a totally misleading representation of the property; please see comments and the experience of our other guests.

Amazing

Our vacation was excellent. The vacation was everything we hoped it would be. Casa Kuxtal is amazing and even nicer than advertised. Location was key for us, as we love walking downtown and around the area. Israel and Rosie are both great and very helpful.

Beautiful house, stunning decor, super relaxed, perfect location

  • 5 of 5
My friends and I had an amazing experience in Merida while we stayed at Casa Kuxtal over Christmas. Firstly, the location of the house is perfect. It is just far enough out of the very centre of town to be away from the noise and traffic, but close enough that it is only a short walk away. Plus, it is right next to a beautiful 'plaza' and cool little markets, and is the more artistic quarter of Merida such that there is an amazing gallery across the road and many boutique stores, cafes, restaurants, bars, and other small galleries nearby. Secondly, there is of course the house itself - WOW! As beautiful as any old majestic mansion with Mexican charm in every corner. The spaces are massive, there are hammocks everywhere (inside and out), the beds are super comfortable, the bathrooms very cool and nicely decorated, the swimming perfect for morning and afternoon swims, there is a rooftop garden and outdoor shower too, and the massive dining room table was ideal for the 10 people we had during our Mexican Christmas feast. Oh and of course there are all the conveniences of fast internet and television for films and great sound system - but these really are a second thought after everything else. So yeah - overall - cool place, cool location, comfortable, good times!
