Welcome to your home away from home, Hale Ke Kai, “where the land and sea meet.” You will come to find out why so many local residents and visitors call it one of the best units at Colony I. We feel honored to have the opportunity to show you the reasons so many have fallen in love with the islands. Those reasons are here to be found in abundance.
The Big Island is our home and we go to great lengths to help you feel at home too. This spacious and beautifully furnished one bedroom condo is single level with absolutely no steps. Although it is considered a condo, there are no upstairs or downstairs neighbors, only the back wall of the closet is shared. Hale KeKai is unit #23 at the Sea Mountain Resort. The lanai (patio) is very private. Speaking of the lanai, “Wow!” is the usual response. Sweeping unobstructed ocean views that blend gently without interruption into an incredible mountain view. This is Hawaii, your Hawaii.
A high quality king size bed in the master bedroom will combine with the soft breezes and gentle lull of the waves to bring calm wondrous dreams of the beauty of the real Hawaii. The living and dining areas also have sweeping ocean views and are outfitted tastefully yet comfortably as this is as much our home as yours. The living area also boasts a fold out sofa bed that we have slept on ourselves and is very comfortable.
The kitchen with range, oven, microwave, full size fridge, coffee/espresso maker, dishwasher, and small appliances is well stocked with quality flat ware, a variety of teas, and condiments and spices to get you started on the meal of your choice.
The bathroom has a cavernous granite tiled shower that is an easy step inside. We love every corner of this place and believe you will too.
Enjoy some world famous Ka’u Coffee on the lanai or hang out at the pool or hot tub with new found friends, either way you will be glad to have found one of the world’s hidden gems. Punaluu Black Sand Beach, consistently voted one of the Top Ten Black Sand Beaches in the World, is only a few minutes’ walk away. Sunbathe beneath the palms, snorkel with turtles, or watch them haul up on the beach. Enjoy some golf or tennis right next door or for the more adventuresome, hike out either direction and re-discover Hawaiian historical sites (please show due respect to all archaeological sites and observe proper viewing distance and rules regarding all marine creatures).
Hale Ke Kai is perfect for any family or couple seeking the trip of a lifetime. A secluded, yet accessible wonder that will be remembered.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is only 30 minutes away, making Punaluu the closest ocean front lodging. Hike the volcano by day and relax in the hot tub under the stars by night. The pool and hot tub have wonderful ocean views and you can barbeque fresh island fish or local grass fed beef on one of the quality barbeques next to the pool.
Our special vision for Hale Ke Kai is for people who may be less able to travel to have the chance to visit one of the best kept secrets in the world…and be comfortable. Hale Ke Kai has no steps, no stairs, just a little bump at the front and sliding doors. This means couples where one partner is movement impaired or a family with aging parents can still share moments of beauty and peace. Our goal is for every family member, including children, to feel safe and at home. Should you or your loved one have special needs, please contact us, we will make every attempt to accommodate your needs.
Big Island residents since the year 2000 and avid hiker/kayak adventurers who also love working with horses and farming. We take great pride in our beautiful home at Punaluu and make every effort to help our guests feel at home too. Being close by allows us to keep our home up to a higher standard of cleanliness and beauty.
Jeff S. purchased this condo in 2013
If you seek the real Hawaiian experience, this is it. Hale Ke Kai at Colony One is smack in the middle of the longest undeveloped coastline in Hawaii. It also happens to be the closest oceanfront accommodations to Volcanoes National Park and is a few minutes walk to Punaluu Black Sand Beach. This is where we have been going to 'get away' for years.
The raw beauty of Hawaii surrounds Hale Ke Kai. Experience the stars and awesome views of the ocean, coast, and mountains without the noise, lights, and crowds. Truly one of the worlds' hidden gems.
We spent 4 days at this very comfortable, light filled condo. We planned to spend lots of time at the volcano park and this condo was a great home base. The pictures on VRBO give you a true sense of the condo and it's beautiful views. All the furnishings are in good condition and very comfortable, especially the king size bed. The shower is a small room in itself. The patio is a wonderful place to have your morning coffee and watch the sunrise, the birds play and the infrequent golfers pass by. We hardly heard any neighbor noise at all. The nearby town of Na'alehu has a good little restaurant, Hana Hou, and good bakery. The condo is located in one of the least developed areas of the Island so if you are planning to use the well equipped kitchen, do your food shopping in Kona or Hilo. There's only a small market 7 miles away in Pahala. All in all a very good choice if you want to get away from the main tourist location of Kona.
We stayed here over Christmas and New Years, and what a location? The Sunrises were amazing. We did see whales one day too, and hadn't been looking for them. Great condo with lots of space. There was just two of us, but could easily have been 3 or 4. Shower is incredible. Furniture was comfortable, bed was great. It was a very quiet unit, never did hear the neighbors, and there were neighbors the whole time.
If you want a place away from the hub of Kona or Hilo this is the place. The condo is well taken care of and furnished and looks exactly how it is in the photos; however they should include a photo of the beautiful marble walk in shower! Your patio is very private and has a beautiful view of the ocean for amazing sunrises. You can walk to Black Sands Beach, but keep in mind driving to Hilo and Kona are a bit of a drive. This island does provide amazing sites, from craters, to turtles, to rain forests. A must is a snorkel with the manta rays, book with Sea Paradise and you will have done something you will never forget! The condo pool and spa is also a wonderful way to relax overlooking the ocean. We've told our friends and we will be back!
We recently stayed two nights to celebrate our anniversary. This condo is delightful! We live on the big island and have "stay cations" occasionally in Punaluu. We have rented a few other condos and this condo is the nicest by far! We plan to be back in the near future.
We can't say enough to describe how wonderful this beautiful condo is. Private, a stunning ocean view, clean, lots of light, amazingly stocked kitchen (one of the best we've seen), nicely furnished and decorated, within walking distance of the Punalu'u black sand beach and the amazing green sea turtles that come up on the beach to rest and sun themselves, a beautiful patio from which to watch the sunrise while having breakfast. The photos in the listing show the condo perfectly. Yes, it really IS that cool.
The two small towns nearby have, between them, a grocery store (fresh vegetables and meat are more plentiful on the weekend), a hardware store, two or three small restaurants and a drug store. Pretty much everything one needs to enjoy a visit to this quiet and beautiful part of the Big Island.
Jeff, the owner, was quite helpful to us, answering our concerns about Hurricane Ana (which hit the islands just days before our trip) and keeping us posted on anything we needed to know about the hurricane aftermath. He took care of a minor problem with a leaky toilet right away.
Some people in nearby units were loud a couple of nights we were there, but other than that, we would say our stay here was perfect. We definitely will recommend this place to everyone and can't believe how fortunate we were to have found it.
We stayed 14 days in this warm and cozy condo. It was a wonderful experience! Its unique location unveil great views on the sea, the mountains, the garden/palm trees as well as on the golf course. The condo is comfortable, very private and inviting for sunbathing, eating out or just relax after a day of hiking in the Hawai'i Volcanoes National park. Thank you very much Jeff. You have contributed to make this journey on Big Island an unforgettable experience!!
Hale Ke Kai is located in the Colony One condominiums at Sea Mountain Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. Punaluu Black Sand Beach is a few minutes walk away. Punaluu offers swimming and snorkeling at one of the 'Top Ten Black Sand Beaches in the World.' Colony One is surrounded by the southernmost golf course in the United States and also has tennis courts minutes away. There are day hikes along the coast where you can see the beautiful coastline of Ka'u with a mountain backdrop provided by Mauna Loa. There are many archaeological sites and petroglyphs (Pre-contact drawings carved in the lava) along the coastal trail. The nearby town of Pahala is about 10 minutes (East or 'Hilo side' as the locals say) away and has a small convenience store, bank, Post Office, and Pharmacy. Pahala is an old sugar plantation town and still has the local flair that other towns can only imitate. A short drive from Pahala is the Ka'u Coffee Mill recognized as one of the best roasteries in the world. The Mill is a must visit for every lover of coffee, macadamia nuts, or beautiful artwork. Kathleen Kam's wonderful scenes of Ka'u adorn the Guest Shop and the staff provide free tours of the Coffee Mill, Roastery, Drying Area, and the Coffee Fields. Free samples are available. Continuing up the road a few minutes leads you to the splendor of Wood Valley and the Tibetan Buddhist Temple, Nechung Dorje Draying Ling. Walk the temple grounds and feel the peace of this special place.
Volcanoes National Park is only 30 minutes away with lava viewing and excellent hiking or walking trails for all levels. Next to the National Park is the town of Volcano. Volcano has a great local art center and has a number of restaurants to choose from, all the way from sandwiches at Lehua Cafe to the posh evening meal Kilauea Lodge.
Because the Big Island is...well, an island, you can also go the other way (West or as the locals say 'Kona side') to Naalehu about 15 minutes from Hale Ke Kai. Along the way you will pass Honuapo Beach Park with it's Hawaiian Fish Ponds used to catch fish with the tide in days gone by. As you go up the hill to Naalehu (or when you return to Punaluu) be certain to stop at the Scenic Point. The view is one of a kind...the longest undeveloped coastline in Hawaii and probably the world. Naalehu has a large grocery store, the Punaluu Bakery (great Malasadas), and restaurants to choose from. Head further 'Kona side' and visit South Point, the southernmost point in the U.S.. Green Sands Beach is a hike, or 4wd trip away from South Point (you can also hire local people to drive you out). Green Sands is famous for its olivine cliffs and sand and is a unique spot to swim in the shore break or dig your feet into the warm sand.
The Big Island and Ka'u abound with activities that will keep everyone in your group wanting to stay longer, and we hope that Hale Ke Kai plays an integral part of a truly memorable visit.
