I grew up in the Chicago area; my husband is from Quebec. We live in Fort Worth, TX (October to May) where I was a professor at Texas Christian University and recently retired. My husband was a home re-modeler and has applied his skills to keep Big House in shape while preserving its original ambiance as much as possible. We love being outdoors-- hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, camping, kayaking. I'm learning more about gardening and hope you'll enjoy the flowers (raspberries, too, although not market quality).

Judy Groulx purchased this house in 1990

My grandfather built the Big House in 1933, using wood beams he purchased from the Chicago World's Fair after they tore down the grandstands, and used brick from the McCormick factory in Chicago. I have never missed a summer here. Originally the property was a farm (named Chic-ah-gami) with dairy cattle and chickens, then it became a cherry farm. The property extends on both sides of our country road for many more acres. We currently lease pastureland for beef, lambs and chickens (half-mile down the road). A 1900's-era logging cabin found on the property was moved by sled in 1949 to a site on Crystal Lake to become my family's summer cottage while I was growing up; we moved into Big House in 1990 when my children were teenagers; they are now grown and bring our grandchildren every summer. We have lifelong friendships with other generations of families around Crystal Lake and in Frankfort, sharing our love of the outdoors and especially the water and sailing. For the summer of 2014 my husband and I plan our once-in-a-lifetime camping trip to Alaska. We hope that Big House will be loved and lived in while we're away.

Outside there are never 2 sunsets alike. There is almost always birdsong. You can see the weather coming from miles away. We watch ore-boats out on the big lake or sailboats and waterskiers on Crystal Lake. At night it's totally quiet and you can see all the stars, sometimes northern lights. Inside, the walls are burnished cedar, or Chicago brick, or 1930's plaster, and the upstairs ceilings conform to the rooflines. Many of the windows are leaded-paned and heavy, opening with a crank. Antique furniture and furnishings are prominent. At sunset, the whole house turns golden inside. At sunrise we often surprise the deer just outside.
