The local gastronomy: The local gastronomy in Vilamoura centres around the fresh fish and sea food that is caught locally. Prawn (camarão), clams of various shapes and sizes and lobster (lagosta) are all readily available and used in many traditional recipes including cataplanas, rice dishes and fish stews (caldeirada). Expect to see octopus (polvo), cuttlefish (choco) and squid (lula) as well as the more usual fish like bream (dourada), sea bass (robalo) and tuna (atum).
Desserts. The Portuguese love their cakes and desserts! Arroz doce (sweet rice pudding); Bolinhos de massa de amêndoa (little cakes of marzipan) in various shapes like fruits, vegetables, fish and flowers; Pudim de amêndoa (almond pudding); Bolachas de mel (little honey cakes) and figs stuffed with chocolate or almonds are all typical.
Vilamoura has a huge range of restaurants with a truly international selection so apart from the fabulous fresh fish and sea food youwill also find Italian, Chinese, Indian, English amongst others.
Drink: Alcohol in general tends to be very reasonably priced in the Algarve (in fact, probably considered cheap compared to most countries), with bottles of wine from as little as 1€ in the supermarkets! The prices of drinks in bars and restaurants can be very reasonable, a glass of wine €1 or €2, spirits (normally good sized measures) about €3 and small draft beers from €1 to €1.50,
A lot of the wine sold in the Algarve comes from other parts of Portugal (Estremadura near Lisbon and Alentejo) but the Algarve does also produce its own wine, most of which comes from the Lagoa, Portimão and Tavira areas. Most restaurants will only have Portuguese wines on their wine list.
The 'house' wine ('vinho da casa') in white ('branco') and red ('tinto') is nearly always a local Portuguese wine and good value. You can also opt for 'vinho verde' which is a young 'green' wine, slightly sparkling, light and refreshing and goes very well with fish and chicken dishes, or rosé - Mateus being the best known.
Beaches: Praia da Marina or Praia de Vilamoura ('Vilamoura Beach') is on the eastern side of Vilamoura marina, another lovely sandy beach with beach bars, sunbeds and a very convenient, large car park right behind the beach.
There are all sorts of water sports available from Praia de Vilamoura and the end nearest the marina is now part of the Nikki Beach Club.
Access is easy as the boarded walkway along the beach joins the road at the car park. It is classed as an 'Accessible Beach' and is supervised during the beach season.
On the western side of Vilamoura marina is the beautiful beach of Praia da Rocha Baixinha - a long stretch of soft white sand that runs all the way to Olhos de Água, Albufeira. Part way along the sands it becomes Praia da Falésia, but who's counting! There is plenty of room for everyone, and more than enough sunbeds to go around! The boarded walkway starts from the marina end and continues westwards for a considerable distance, past several beach bars.
