This midcoast Maine vacation rental is close to the beautiful midcoast Maine sandy beaches and trails at Reid State Park. We supply the park pass for your vacation stay. Our Maine cottage is near quaint Five Islands Harbor and Wharf where you can enjoy Maine lobster and hand made ice cream. This coastal cottage provides the perfect setting to sit back and relax, but is close enough to do more if you choose. Historic Bath and the Maine Maritime Museum are just 20 minutes away and famous Freeport shopping (including LL Bean) is only about 40 minutes.

Our rustic cottage has three bedrooms (sleeps four adults, three children), one bath, full kitchen, living room and eating area. It boasts two decks, dock, float, a grassy play area and five and a half acres of woods. For the boater and water enthusiast there are 200 feet of frontage on the Little Sheepscot River (saltwater) and two moorings available for power or sail boats. There is currently one kayak available for use at your own risk.

Although never crowded by most standards, if you choose to visit in the 'early season' from Memorial Day to mid-June or early fall from Labor Day to Columbus day, you can enjoy an even quieter midcoast Maine where the beaches and hiking trails are yours, and all of the local attractions are free from summer visitors, for a fraction of our summer rates. There is nothing like a good book, a warm stove, and watching the tides from our family room. We've even built an outdoor fire pit so you can linger outside by the sea just a little longer.

About Melinda DiPerna

Hi, this is a photo of Melinda DiPerna. My husband, Paul, and I own this little slice of heaven in Maine. I'm sitting in a restaurant in Athens Greece in this photo - WE love to travel, and hope you'll enjoy our cottage as part of your travels. I believe every vacation is one to cherish and that they are all great. We are New England natives (me=NH, Paul=MA) and love water and sailing, and the rocky coast of Maine. We find just watching the tides to be entertaining here. We have two girls, now teens, and they've been coming to the coast of Maine since they were babies, even before we bought this cottage. We can't spend the time we could when they were little, so we rent our cottage out to help us afford it until we retire. We have over 5 acres here so we hope that when we retire and spend our summers here we'll be able to have a modest little compound, surrounded by our family and friends. Until then, we love to share with others, and many of our guests feel like family. We treat every guest even better than family: we don't ask you to stop and pick up milk!

Melinda DiPerna purchased this cottage in 1999
Why Melinda DiPerna chose Georgetown

Paul and I are native New Englanders. We met in 1986 and are always in search of real estate, but most importantly we learned to sail in 1987 and knew that we needed a place someday where we could walk down to our own sailboat (and now power boat) and just hop on. We started staying in Maine in Camden at a great B&B and moved on north as far as Bar Harbor. When we started looking to buy, we knew we needed to come south so we could be closer to an airport and good health care. We rented cottages and looked for YEARS. We moved to CA and IL in the meantime, but we kept coming back to this place in 1998 and 1999. It had everything: 200' of frontage with deep water at low tide, 3 moorings, a dock (we didn't know it was rotten because it was under lobster traps) and float (that a fisherman took with him), and plenty of land. The cottage was AWFUL! It was a fishing camp that was unused and infested with everything. The floors were particle board and you had to duck to get upstairs. The roof didn't leak, and the transformation began!!! We closed in April 1999 and 5 weeks of sweat, money, and mosquito bites later, we hosted our first guests...every year we improve something, but the original structure remains. We did need a new roof recently though! We don't have a sailboat here right now (the Windy Mindy II is still on the grounds but just a dingy that's too heavy), but we have kayaks that we let guests use at their own risk, and we have a boat and a dinghy for our own use. Many of our guests come just because they can bring their own boat(s).

What makes this cottage unique

Exploring the rivers by boat. Fishing and catching absolutely nothing. Exploring Reid State Park. Clamming. Eating lobster the neighbors caught. Dear Friends: our original caretaker has a brother...the caretaker has moved away, but his brother and family have become like our own family. We've also come to enjoy many of our fisherman neighbors and find the down to earth qualities of Mainers to be refreshing after 11 months in CA. We love the Laura Richards Library, sea food in the rough. I absolutely LOVE the live auction at the firehouse which is usually the first or second Saturday of July...hate it when I miss it! Five Islands farm. Reny's in Bath. Antiquing in Bath. Reading many good books. Doing puzzles. Varied wildlife. In 2009 I started a rock and fairy garden at the footpath over our stream with my dear friend. We built the fire pit 2 years ago and it's proven to be our favorite evening spot. In 2011 I planted some great hosts which the critters (deer?) mowed down overnight. We spend lots of time entertaining family and local friends with barbecues on the grill, lots of fresh clams we dig ourselves, lobster our friends catch, and roasted marshmallows at the fire.

Property Type:
  • cottage
Location Type:
  • Ocean View ...
This is a riverfront cottage in the sense it is on the Little Sheepscot River. However if you understand Maine geography, you'll also understand this is salt water oceanfront, with 9 foot tides. Thank the glaciers for this unique land and drop the kayaks in off our dock and float. Landlubbers will enjoy watching others, including authentic Maine lobstermen and summer island people work and play in our protected waters. Boaters will love our 2 moorings and deep water float. We also supply the Georgetown resident pass for boat launching.

See the details under ocean front. This property is on the Little Sheepscot river, but the river is salt water and has nine foot tides - considered oceanfront here, but no waves.
General:
  • Washing Machine ...
Washer on site. Ocean view dryer (old fashioned clothes line). We have a small carbon footprint and have decided to keep it that way. One of our vacation rental guests installed a clothes line at her NY home after staying at our waterfront cottage.
  • Wood Stove ...
We have a very old fashioned wood stove that does a nice job of heating up the cottage. This is a seasonal cottage. We also have "personal" heaters for specific area heating should a cold snap hit. For the most part our guests prefer the personal heaters when needed. Wood provided. We also have fans for when the weather gets hot. This is Maine; weather is unpredictable.
  • Linens Provided ...
We leave the sheets folded for each bed. This is one way BETTER Vacation Rentals stays "green." Provision of linens is unusual in Maine, but we don't like to travel with 4 sets of sheets and towels either! All kitchen and bath towels are provided. Please bring your own beach towels and blankets
  • Parking Off Street ...
Private waterfront drive. Perfect for your boat, truck, even RV. Our lot has plenty of room, but please park in the drive, without driving over the well.
  • Parking for RV/Boat/Trailer ...
Bring your boat and tie it up at our dock or moorings. Plenty of room on land too. Your RV, trailer, and toys are welcome on our 5.5 acre lot. Your boat can be launched at high tide at the Georgetown launch on Rte 127 before the second bridge, using our resident pass that comes with the cottage rental.
Kitchen:
  • Kitchen ...
This vacation rental comes with a fully appointed kitchen uniquely outfitted to enjoy your Maine lobster and clams! There is an oven, 4 burner electric stove, microwave oven, coffee maker, toaster, blender, and full size refrigerator and freezer. There is not an ice cube maker but we supply trays and a holder. There is a large cooler and cold packs supplied for picnics. There is not a dishwasher, but there is a drainer.
  • Refrigerator ...
There is a refrigerator and freezer. Ice cubes are made in trays. We stock the Maine cottage with cold packs for the cooler and and 4 frosted beer mugs. Please leave them for the next guest.

Our waterfront cottage has become the gathering point for summer cookouts and barbecues as well as evening bonfires where the moonrises are something out of a fairy tale. Picture yourself rocking down at the dock on our LL Bean all weather rockers, or enjoying a picnic on our locally made picnic table, while the kids fish for mackerel on our float (we have PFD's (lifejackets) on our dock). Small cozy cottage in a great location

Submitted: November 20, 2011 Stayed: August 2011
If you are looking for a place to really have some together time, this is perfect! The cottage is small with no tv and very limited internet access, so our usually distracted teenagers were forced to interact with the family - exactly what we wanted! And there is plenty to do - kayaking was a blast, crabbing, fishing, Reid park is beautiful and a short drive away. If it rains, the cottage is full of games and puzzles and Freeport and Portland are only about 35-45 minutes away. We had a wonderful vacation and loved the location of this property!

A Much needed return, and stay at the Cove!

Submitted: November 20, 2011 Stayed: August 2011
We were excited, and happy to be able to return this year. Our last stay seemed so short, and as it turns out, this year's stay felt the same. Fantastic location for Privacy, relaxation, for "winding" down from the Hectic norm. Great weather, only one day of rain, but plenty to do in Bath/Wiscasset area on a rainy day. A notable 'change' since our last stay-Being greeted in the Morning by a Chipmunk we named "Dale" on the deck for breakfast! "Dale" likes Peanuts, Sunflower seeds, and Bread/rolls, and is the friendliest Chipmunk we've ever seen. He'll eat right out of your hand once he get's comfortable! Note: Nighttime on the Dock is one of the most Peaceful, and relaxing places I've found to sit and "zone". Thanks, we'll be looking to schedule another trip back next year.

Wonderful Weekend

Submitted: November 20, 2011 Stayed: September 2011
We had an awesome time at this cottage in Georgetown! It is just as advertised and really comfortable. Georgetown is very quiet over labor day and the Reid State Park pass is a huge bene of this rental! It was also great to be able to rent for a couple nights rather than only a whole week. We hope to come back in the future for a whole week!

--A Delight--

Submitted: November 20, 2011 Stayed: October 2011
Melinda made the reservation process clear & simple ; she demonstrated real follow-through and flexibility. Additionally, the family's thoughtfulness was evident throughout the cottage.

We enjoyed how clean the cottage was and how many thoughtful details had been arranged--incl. a mosquito shield net @ the door and a small laundry drying rack--in case of rain.

The location afforded us a chance to explore Georgetown in greater depth than we had in earlier years. The pass for Reid State Park was esp. helpful--what a lovely place that is.

We were delighted to see the various books highlighting possibilities along the coast--and inland, too. Far too muah do actually accomplish this September.

We appreciated the recommendation to try Gray Haven Inn's restaurant, The Blue. Delicious.

As ever, Robinhood Free Mtng House provided a special treat dinner. Those cream cheese biscuits: wow.

And the folks @ the Georgetown Country store were friendly and helpful--good coffee, too!

Of course, the Georgetown Lobstermen's Co-op provides the freshest seafood possible. Baskets of lobsters were off-loaded from the boat as we waited. Plus, Annabelle's ice cream there on the wharf is perfection plus. Try some.

Most of all we enjoyed just sitting on the deck watching the fog descend & rise, noting the lobster boats coming & going, observing the industrious chipmunks & various birds passing through--just plain fun.

If you want to be closer to townlife this might not be your spot, but if you love seacoast granite, observing wildlife & seabirds, ever-changing seawater and a bit of marvelous alone time, this is just perfect.

Wonderful Fall Getaway

Submitted: November 20, 2011 Stayed: September 2011
"Wonderful fall getaway"
My sister and I chose Georgetown to be near the haunts we frequented 50-60 years ago as children during summers in Maine and to be on the water rathr than a daytrip away as we were as kids. Our trip met all our expectations and introduced us to much more.

This well-equipped cottage on the Little Sheepscot tidal estuary overlooks the comings and goings of working lobster boats. It is a picture-perfect view best enjoyed by breakfast and dinner on the expansive deck. The cottage is privately situated at the end of a long winding new blacktop through dense woods ending in the spectacular waterfront.

We had everything we needed to cook in, and there were wonderful places to eat out within a few miles--the Georgetown Warf and the Osprey.

Late September was an ideal time to visit this year. It was warm--in the 70s--most days, leaves were just barely beginning to turn, and it was even warm enough to wade in the ocean at Reid State Park, a favorite from our childhood summers. The free pass provided with the cottage made that easier.

The beds are very comfortable and the comforters provided make nights cozy. The stairway to the 2nd floor bedrooms is long and steep, but there is a big bedroom on the 1st floor.

Besides some of the obvious places to visit in the region, we recommend Halcyon Yarns, a big but warm and friendly wholesale and retail yarn store in Bath. (We visited 3 times in a week.)BBC was there one day we were there to film a piece on the business owner who encourages employees to bring their young children to work. The Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, located in several beautifully restored or renovated buildings downtown, had a fascinating exhibit on andrew Wyeth's famous painting, Christina's World. There were preliminary sketches and paintings made elsewhere on Christina's farm as well as lots of information about back story of the painting. Alas the painting itself was not there.
