Aloha. I am a kama'aina-indigenous Hawaiian, living in a tropical environment. My residence (hale) is ideally located in the heart of Hilo with lots of authentic Hawaiian artifacts and charm. My yard is lush with many tropicals, which I carefully planted. I was born and raised in Hilo, and this was my primary residence growing up so it is dear and special to me. I have lots of local knowledge and history of Hilo and its people. My grandfather was a senator and many of his senate bills that he introduced are still on the books today. I love traveling, hosting, cooking, entertaining, avid golfer, canoe paddler and hula. Hawaii has 12 months of outdoor weather. So come and enjoy my retreat. I believe staying here will be a very special experience reminiscent of old Hawaii. You will feel the mana....spiritual power.... E komo mai.....welcome.....
Kawehi Cochran purchased this house in 1938

Warmth, charm, lots of Aloha, FULL AMENITIES. Located 29 miles to active volcano, and the National Park. Minutes away from Imiloa Center, University of Hawaii and walking distance to the downtown area.
Three miles from the Hilo Muncipal Golf Course. Whale watching in Hilo Bay. It is very peaceful and in a tropical lush setting.
My husband and I enjoyed six comfortable nights at this unique "Hawaiian cottage" which has a lot of character. This was a good place to kick back after a day of sightseeing. The house is very, very close to the center of
town where there're a number of good restaurants. The airport is about a 12-minute drive from the house.
The hostess is a very thoughtful, gracious and helpful lady. She will provide laundry at a minimal cost if one needs the service. Wine is also provided at a minimal cost too. We love this place.
We recently completed a two week vacation in Hawaii. As we had decided to island hop, we were looking for something a little different from our Waikiki high-rise or our Maui Beach Resort for our three night visit to the Big Island. We had opted to stay in Hilo to get a better taste of the quieter, more traditional Hawaii. As a result, my search ended us up booked at Hale Kawehi. It ended up being one of the true highlights of our visit to Hawaii.
The Property: This is not a typical house, but a unique property that offers guests a chance to stay in a classic old Hawaiian house. Be assured that you have use of the entire house, as the owner/hostess has separate living quarters behind the house. Your home includes a bedroom with two comfortable twin beds, a full bath, a half bath, a full kitchen, two living rooms, a bar area, a TV area, and finally two glorious outside sitting areas for you to enjoy, and for smokers, a place to light up. Covered parking is also included for any rental. In true Hawaiian tradition, the windows are not glass but are all screened making the outdoors a huge part of the atmosphere in the house. It is a comfortable and unique experience. All amenities are there for cooking your own food, as well as anything else required to ``live`` in the house. A nice touch is you are greeted upon check-in with fresh croissants and fresh juice for weary travelers, and local wine is available for a small fee if you should desire as well.
The Owner: We had the opportunity of course to meet Kawehi when we checked in and she was a lovely lady who made us feel very welcome in what can be sometimes a different experience for a lot of people. She is a life long Hawaiian, and well versed on her immediate surroundings in Hilo, as well as with all the Big Island has to offer and beyond. A world traveler, you get the sense right away that she appreciates why you are there, and will do what she can to make your visit special. She is very proud of her family`s home, as is obvious as soon as you meet her. We had the opportunity to meet up with her at different times during our visit, and we left feeling like we had made a new friend.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a unique and comfortable place to stay that offers a convenient location to visit Hilo or as a jumping off place for the Big Island, you will not do better than Hale Kawehi. I would not hesitate for a moment to make this our home again during any return visit to Hawaii!!!!! Mahalo
We ended a 10 day trip with our last two nights at Hale Kawehi. It was the perfect place to wind down and prepare for our long trip home. As other reviewers indicate, the host goes out of her way to make visitors comfortable with juice and croissants and really helpful travel advice. Little signs provide helpful directions for use of lights, fans, etc. and even wine and laundry are provided for a very minimal cost. Impeccably clean, the house is built in a uniquely Hawaiian style with as much livable space outside as inside and is beautifully and interestingly decorated (old clocks and stained glass!). Mahalo!
We got much more than we bargained for. This was our first "vacation rental" (other than a hotel room) and we didn't expect the initial supplies in the refrigerator or anticipate the fresh croissants every couple of days. fresh linens, a full supply of kitchen utensils, delightful decorating, and the privacy of a Hawaiian garden all contributed to our vacation experience.
We also appreciated Kawehi's excellent tourist destination and restaurant suggestions.
We will be back!
Ten days was too short a time with Kawehi. Wish we could have stayed longer. 2,000 square feet of outdoor and indoor living!!! Loved, loved the porch and dining deck!!! Will certainly be back again and again!
Hale Kawehi was a delightful surprise for my two nights in Hilo. The spacious accommodations are filled with unique memorabilia of Hawaii from a different time and every room has an inviting space you want to make your own. The bed is comfortable and the kitchen is wonderful to work in. The location is very close to downtown or you can turn in another direction and be at Rainbow Falls or onto the Saddle Road in minutes. Quiet, peaceful and private, I would recommend Hale Kawehi for a single traveller or a couple and look forward to a future stay. Kawehi and Mr. Princess are the perfect hosts.
Located in the downtown area, walking distance. Close to Rainbow Falls, Liliuokalani Park, Hilo Municipal Golf Course, Imiloa Astrology Center. A great launch to all tourist attractions. 30 miles to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Hale Kawehi is a very special kama'aina, very open Polynesian guest house in downtown Hilo featuring many Hawaiian museum/artifacts displayed throughout the house...... there are beautiful stained glass windows and panels and Koa furniture and cabinets. The setting is very private and tropical...a very special oasis in the center of Hilo and you will be coming to a very nice and quiet neighborhood. This guest house is large, 2,000 sq.ft., on a family estate, and very private. Host lives in a separate cottage. It is walking distance to the downtown area with the bus terminal, farmer's market, restaurants and shops. The Volcano district, Akaka Falls, Botanical Gardens, Imiloa, Liliuokalani Gardens are must see places. If you want to golf, there are 3 golf courses in the area. Hilo is, indeed, the sightseeing side of the Island. So come, relax and enjoy the enchanting Hale Kawehi. For more information, you may go to my website: halekawehi.com
