About Dia Michels

I moved to Washington DC in 1980 to save the world. Unfortunately, the world could still use quite a bit of help! I, however, fell in love with DC and never left. I met my husband in 1981 and we have lived here ever since. This home was our first house in DC. We currently live in a larger and newer (1905) townhouse in the same neighborhood. We fell in love with Capitol Hill and have raised our three kids here. We love the area and want to share it with others.

Dia Michels purchased this townhome in 1983

Why Dia Michels chose Capitol Hill

This 1958 charming home is from the Civil War era. The house has been totally upgraded with an open layout, 4 flat screen TVs, an amazing leather sectional sofa, fabulous beds and a lovely front porch and backyard. Just one block off Barracks Row, the house is caddy-corner to the Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., the oldest active post in the Corps and near the Washington Naval Yard and old Naval Hospital (now a community center). The house is quaint, yet spacious and with a location just 8 blocks from the U.S. Capitol, the location is ideal.

What makes this townhome unique

Washington DC is a great place to spend time. The city is compressed, so you can get anywhere is a short time. We have great public transportation (the Eastern Market Metro is just 3 blocks away) and the city is flat, so it is perfect for walking and cycling. Rent this house for access to the entire city. Entertain friends, BBQ in the yard or walk around the block where there are dozens of restaurants. Live theater, great parks, free museums and baseball are all just a few steps away!

Great spot to explore and relax!

We enjoyed staying so close to all the sites. We also enjoyed chilling out in the spacious living room and having use of a full kitchen, dining room, and laundry!

Perfect for Our Group

  • 5 of 5
This house is excellent for our group of two couples and a teenager. My husband and I had the bedroom on the front of the house leaving the other couple and their daughter with the privacy of the center and back rooms. The way the house is configured their two rooms could be reached through a door at the top of the front stairs or with their own "private" stairs from the back of the kitchen. Having three bathrooms worked well also.

Everything was clean and well maintained. Expect some creaky floors but that is normal for a house of this age. The kitchen was well equipped, and there is a pretty little courtyard out back of it to sit in. We found the living room furniture to be very comfortable and great to relax on after a full day of walking. We had no surprises - the description is quite accurate with the exception that it was even better than we had expected!

The location is a couple of blocks from the metro and is an easy walk. Right around the corner is Barracks Row with plenty of restaurants from Starbucks to higher end eateries. This was very convenient for those times we returned early from sightseeing and wanted to eat close or get take out. The historic Eastern Market is not too far away either.

The owners are very responsive and gave us the most detailed instructions and information that we have ever gotten from an owner. I have already recommended this property to friends and family who may be planning a trip to DC.

Great Stay in Washington

  • 5 of 5
Our recent stay was completely satisfactory. The location was perfect for sightseeing in Washington with a metro stop a few blocks away and the house an easy walk to the Mall. On top of that, it was also a few blocks in the other direction from 395, a major road going out of the city for the sightseeing we wanted to do in the area. Our group included three couples. We found the three bedrooms and three baths worked well for us. The house was old but freshly painted and at the same time modern, newly renovated bathrooms and kitchen, thus a great combination of old and new. We found the house to be clean and well maintained. The few things that needed to be attended to,a problem with the doorbell and one light fixture, were quickly attended to by the readily accessible handy man.

The house is located one block from 8th Street, SE which is full of excellent restaurants. In addition, there were two supermarkets near-by as well as Eastern Market and a very close small convenience store so shopping was easy. These factors combined made our stay a good one. There is no question that I'd recommend this property to friends and relatives for their use when visiting Washington. Indeed, I already have.

Great Place

  • 5 of 5
This home was in a wonderful area, close to the metro and various restaurants. It was cozy and spotless and we loved its history. Dia checked with us several times to make sure we had everything we needed. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it as a great place to stay in DC.

Great location, perfect for a quick stay in DC!

  • 4 of 5
This historic home is such a quick walk (3 blocks) from the Eastern Market metro and the same distance to MANY great, trendy restaurants. This home was perfect for my family of 5 (3 teens) to unwind after a long day of DC touring. Much better than a hotel! This home is full of character and vibrant colors. Just like the photos! The only downside to the age of this home is the floorboards do move under your feet, but you get used to it. (I LOVED this neat place for our home for a week, but could never live here due to the floorboards sloping and moving.) Bathrooms and laundry are ALL new and modern. TVs are plentiful and large!
I have to mention to future renters that the owner was very communicative up until the week of our arrival. I had paid her in full, but when it came time for us to arrive, I had no entry code and no communication with the owner. Needless to say, I was quite nervous. When she said that she would email and text me the code, I waited and heard nothing until the hour before our arrival! I drove my family to DC from Chicago and for over 4 hours, I was sweating bullets wondering if I was a victim of fraud--not cool. I didn't communicate my dismay, but was glad to know the house I pd for was actually ours for the week. The very next day after we finished our first day of touring, the owner and her dog were on the steps waiting for us. She wanted to come in and retrieve something that a previous owner had left there 2 wks ago. It was a bit awkward as she walked through the house and stayed for an hour. She was very friendly, but I have never encountered this in my VRBO rentals. The house and location is great, but the overall experience with owner is the reason I give it 4 stars and not 5.
BE sure to eat at: Ted's Bulletin (homemade poptarts and great coffee), Tortilla Cafe (7th St) Matchbox (great pizza!)

Great stay

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just spent a week in this lovely home with our 3 grandsons ( age 14,10 & 8). This was perfect. Each had their own space and tv after a day of sight seeing. We had breakfast and supper here. Sitting at the table each night as a family and actually talking was the best part of the trip. Thank goodness we found this property. My husband and 14 yo walked to A Nationals game. That was really special. Groceries and restaurants were close. The neighborhood is special. Very safe and the neighbors are friendly.
