Asheville House Rental Photos and Description
3BR 1 1/2 bath with large shady yard, creek. Private, but close to twn and BRP!
NEWLY REMODELED, professionally designed interior 3 BR,1 and 1/2 bath home is very well appointed, uncluttered, chic and spotlessly clean! Please note that phone coverage in the mountains is spotty with the exception of Verizon. A short drive will correct any difficulties you might have from the rental (2 miles to Merrimon). Its new well-equipped kitchen with granite tops, maple cabinets, stainless fridge or the charcoal grill on the backyard deck make cooking at home a pleasant option. The large back yard's vegetation and trees make it feel quite private and country in character even though it is close to town. The mature pair of Apple trees provide shade for a nap in a hammock and there is a sweet contemplative spot creek side. You are welcome to walk across the street where our other rental VRBO 387785 (see this site and consider as an option now or in the future) sets above a two acre meadow with more of the same creek, an aisle of pine trees to promenade, a natural wood with a path and a view of the mountains, a large fire pit, pavilion and glen. We are only 7 minutes to Asheville and fewer to the historic GROVE PARK INN with its grand stone architecture, piano bar lobby with giant fireplaces. There you can count the mountain ranges while dining on a porch that overlooks the Donald Ross designed golf course to the BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS beyond in the SMOKY MOUNTAINS. Sunsets there are lovely and when the clouds meet the fog curling in the valleys between the ranges, you can actually see them smoke! Tour the famous BILTMORE ESTATE, the LARGEST privately owned mansion in the United States built by the VANDERBILTS. This is the best tour of its kind in the United States, providing the Downton Abbey experience of America, unrivaled by the big houses of Europe. Its spectacular acres of rolling hills, Appalachian forest, formal and informal gardens designed by famed landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmstead display breathtaking vistas year round. Eating there is a treat at any one of their restaurants serving what they grow and breed on the estate grounds. Visit their winery and taste, taste, taste then take some home to friends for gifts. Speaking of gifts - Asheville's UNIQUE SHOPPING opportunities include local and regional crafts including jewelry, fabric and clothing. Our FOLK ART CENTER features Appalachian crafts, pottery, blown glass, designer clothing, artifacts, quilts and prints. They always have an interesting special exhibit upstairs that often includes one-of-a-kind furniture or other utilitarian art. The RIVER DISTRICT studios where artists are at work while you browse also has wonderful choices for dining including WHITE DUCK TACO and TWELVE BONES (Obama's favorite). The BILTMORE VILLAGE below the estate has shops that include the locally owned NEW MORNING GALLERY in which the smartest collections of furniture, jewelry, ceramics and outdoor sculpture are displayed with such grace it makes you want to stop at the minor BASILICA OF ST LAWRENCE just across the street. Drive up the road and tour the THOMAS WOLFE HOUSE in downtown Asheville before attending the theater at NC STAGE - always cutting edge.
From RACK FOCUS FIVE you can get to glorious vistas with ease. There is a back way short drive to the BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY from the rental where your choices are to stop immediately and hike its trails or continue a short distance to CRAGGY GARDENS where the rhododendron covered hills tell a story of these mountains that the visitor center there can help you understand. Continue past it to GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN the regions most ecologically diverse nature preserve and a great place to hike and picnic. Its MILE HIGH SWINGING BRIDGE is fun to cross and its photography opportunities and guided towers with naturalists can help you bring home memories to frame on your wall. MOUNT MITCHELL STATE PARK takes you and family or friends to 6,683' heights, the highest peak in the Eastern United States with a 360 degree panoramic view at its summit. This is the home of wonderful hiking or biking, camping or mountaineering and the river - the FRENCH BROAD offers tubing when the weather allows (much of the year) that is not only beautiful on both banks but has trips of 1 hour or more from which you can hop out for lunch or a beer!
Back DOWNTOWN, our sidewalk musicians are brilliant year round and the COMEDY BUS TOUR and the BREWS CRUISE are something to tweet home about. Tour the home BREWERIES in what is now BEER CAPITAL USA and then eat at a great assortment of restaurants. HIGHLAND BREWING and THE WEDGE are just two of the bar venues that we like. Where there is natural beauty and beer, there is MUSIC and we offer all varieties at unique venues from civic centers and historic churches to warehouses and bars. Look up THE ORANGE PEEL for instance or THE GREY EAGLE. See what is coming to the US CELLULAR CENTER (Asheville Civic Center) Come once. Come again.
Please don't forget to check out our other site VRBO 387785 RACK FOCUS COTTAGE, right across the street and creek from RACK FOCUS FIVE. If you are in need of an EVENT VENUE - please think about booking our beautifully landscaped FOUR ACRES with a picturesque creek running through it, a promenade of pines, a glen with a pavilion, a large fire pit, horse shoes, Boccie Ball. The two rentals together make it perfect for a reunion, a birthday gathering, a small wedding, graduation, anniversary...
Did I mention FOOD? There are so many great restaurants in Asheville with unique dining experiences featuring cuisine of any kind you can think of that people diet before visiting! And if the 7 minutes to a downtown restaurant is too much trouble, there are some great places to eat on this end of town ~ tapas, fusion, vegetarian, vegan - even great vegan fast food! Asian - great sushi nearby and WONDERFUL pizza, cal-zones and antipastos at family restaurant and bar MARCOS. Or for pizza, salad and local brew WITH a movie (family fare during the day, popular mainstream titles at night) there is the BREW AND VIEW about three miles from the rental.
ALSO VERY LOCAL to the rental is BEAVERLAKE and BIRD SANCTUARY only a 3 mile drive. This small lake can be walked around in 45 minutes making it a popular guest exercise spot where the conversation is usually about where to lunch and what event to attend that evening. One of our personal favorite spots for making plans because it is so pleasant that we often give them up to simply enjoy ourselves is the BATTERY PARK BOOK EXCHANGE AND CHAMPAGNE bar in the GROVE ARCADE - our Art Deco . The exchange has wine and champagne by the glass and more importantly thousands of books to peruse in dozens of gathering spaces that feel like your favorite living, bistro or library nook defined by walls of books.
Re-FOCUS. Enjoy. From zip-lining to fine dining, Asheville is where I would vacation if I didn't live here.

About Gayle Wurthner
From Pittsburgh Pennsylvania I graduated with a Fine Art Degree from Carnegie Mellon University and worked in theater and film most of my life with forays and double-ups in teaching art and design. Our first property is my converted Art Studio. This one is across the street. Since they view each other, I decided to create a furnished vacation rental at #5 this past March to provide a 3 BR, 1 1/2 bath option and here we are!
Gayle Wurthner purchased this house in 2001
Why Gayle Wurthner chose Asheville
The lovely couple who built this house rewarded our neighborliness with the right of first refusal and we didn't refuse. We love sharing it with those visiting our beloved adopted city.
What makes this house unique
This is a sweet spot with a country character. Skies filled with fireflies at night and birds by day AND YET you can be in the city in minutes. The brand new kitchen makes dining in a breeze and the hammock under the apple trees makes napping a breeze too! Cozy, comfortable, pet free, uncluttered and immaculate.
Guestbook comments from the owner
I LOVED living here!! I split my time between Rack Focus Five 482027 and the Cottage 387785, so my review is for both. Gayle and her husband Rob are the nicest people, and really went above and beyond to make sure my stay was memorable. As the other reviewers have mentioned, the property is beautiful. Both houses are clean, updated with modern amenities, wonderfully decorated, and just very comfortable. The view from the cottage is unbelievable and the high ceilings, open floor plan, and large windows really make staying here a treat. Rack Focus Five is better if you're travelling with more than 2 people as it has more space, separated bedrooms, and it's own backyard and BBQ. Either way, you can't go wrong and will certainly have a great time. Thanks again, Gayle, for such a great experience.
