Podere Santo Stefano, an old stone house on the river Ombrone, has been restored from 2000 on with great love and respect for the materials and the original structures. In addition to housing the owner and some rooms for rent, there are also 2 apartments, completely independent, with a large outdoor (porch or terrace) in a large garden with swimming pool. In each apartment there is a fireplace (wood is free of charge), a well-equipped kitchenette in the living room, one or two bedrooms with bathroom. All rooms have large windows that open out to beautiful vistas. Careful preservation work on the ceilings' wooden beams, the ancient terracotta floors and stonework lends a feeling of warmth to this old country home. It is also at guests' disposal a library with hundreds of books, also in English.
The Podere Santo Stefano is located in the Montecucco wine producing area, which was recently granted the appellation d'origine contrôlée status. Beyond the inn's olive grove you can quickly immerse yourself in ancient and even recently planted vineyards and visit local wine cellars to taste their products.
Not far lies Val d'Orcia, whose lands produce the noble wine Brunello di Montalcino, followed by a string of hill towns whose lives and souls are dedicated to this king of wines: Montalcino, Sant'Angelo in Colle, San Quirico d'Orcia with its gardens and Pienza with its Renaissance monuments. For those who enjoy hot springs, the enchanting Bagno Vignoni is very close and you can also quickly reach the thermal baths of Saturnia and Petriolo.
The inn lies at the foot of Mount Amiata, which at 1,738 meters is the highest peak in southern Tuscany. Within just a few kilometers, olive groves and vineyards give way to chestnut and beech groves.
Looking beyond, we should remind you that the Podere Santo Stefano is located half way between Siena and the seaside, right at the point where the soft hills trimmed with cypress trees slope toward the vast plains of Maremma.
The main seaside resorts and the fascinating “Parco dell’Uccellina” (The “Uccellina National Reserve”) are between 40 and 50 km away, as well as the charming towns of Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana, where you can visit etruscan remains. Siena is km 60 far, Florence 120 km, Rome 220.
