When 'Oyster Harbour' was settled by Europeans in the late 1800s, it had long sustained a significant First Peoples population--the 'Stz'uminus,' or 'Chemainus' First Nation--who gathered clams and oysters from the soft bed of the bay and fished its sheltered waters. Although the shoreline of 'Oyster Harbour,' now called 'Ladysmith,' has developed into the charming town it is today, the view from our picturesque waterfront cottage, nestled amongst mature Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar trees, retains the sheltered isolation and tranquility of an earlier time. Sunnyside cottage, on its own secluded, south-facing half acre, is 2500 square feet of bright and open West Coast life. Mere minutes away from Ladysmith, yet neighbouring Stz'uminus Forest Reserve Land on the East and the Woodley Range Ecological Reserve its environs are teeming with Bald Eagles, Blue Herons, Hummingbirds and other wildlife. A nature lover's paradise, the cottage features hardwood floors and wood-trim and craftmanship throughout. Two spacious bedrooms on the upper floor and a large den/3rd bedroom on the main floor boast spectacular views of secluded forest and the sheltered tidal waters bounded by Woods Island to the South, making it an idyllic adult retreat and at once a perfect place to engage young children with natural life. Seated on the 14 X 40 foot front deck--attuned to the ubiquitous whistle of eagles--visitors will be entranced as the tide recedes and thousands of baby crabs, oysters, clams and 'Midshipmen' (a kind of fish so-named for the 'buttons' on its belly that resemble the buttons on the uniforms of sailors and that thrive in the intertidal shallows and hide under the bigger rocks) scurry for cover as eagles, gulls, ravens, and herons cruise the shoreline for snacks.

Inside the house, linens on the beds are 320 thread count organic sheets, while the bathrooms are ensuite in the king bedroom and European style vanity and WC in the queen bedroom, with an additional four piece bathroom with Jacuzzi tub on the main floor. Also on the main floor, an expansive open living/dining area with a woodstove adjoins a modern kitchen with bay-window eating nook, a full laundry and the 600 square foot deck. Slate entryway, lower level walk-out games room with French doors down to the water, detached storage shed and carport for guests watercraft, bicycles, etc. Paddle boat provided for the use of guests.

We live in the Central Cowichan Valley, just outside of a Duncan, BC. Together with our five children and Kate's mom, Leslie, we own and operate a small, organic, mixed farm. We also manage and share ownership in the 'Matraea Centre,a Family Health and Wellness Centre in Downtown Duncan which makes a home for the Cowichan Midwifery Group, Kate's midwifery practice, and our natural mama and baby boutique, 'Matraea Mercantile,'' , among other allied health and wellness businesses.

This property was purchased specifically for its situation and orientation. It is first and foremost a rare and sought after South-facing waterfront location. Its proximity and accessibility from both Duncan and Nanaimo, as well as its accessibility from both sides of Vancouver via the Nanaimo Ferry Terminals at Departure Bay and at Duke Point provide access to both North and South Vancouver making mainland excursions via BC Ferries to Squamish, Whistler, the Sunshine Coast, and beyond as convenient as to get to Tsawwassen, White Rock, Bellingham or Seattle. In this way Vancouver can be approached or avoided from either direction according to the intent of the trip.

The splendour of its natural setting coupled with its tranquility make this place so special. Visiting the cottage is like travelling to a different place in time. If you give in completely to the setting, from within the house, looking out through the different windows, you variously feel as though you could be in a rainforest tree-house, on a jungle safari, or at a lakeside cottage. Or once outside, when the drum beat of a Dragon-boat approaches, or a couple of kayakers paddle noiselessly past , or a neighbour heads out in his fishing boat disturbing seven eagles from their whistling perches, you know you can only be inhabiting a little piece of the paradise left on earth.

Perfect family getaway!

To say that our experience at Sunnyside Cottage was a "good one", would be an understatement. It was fantastic in every way. It offered the perfect balance between open coastal views and wooded privacy, As a family of six it met all of our needs, providing a safe fenced yard for the kids to play in as well as being right on the ocean with warm tidal waters and a fun shoreline to explore. There was a also a paddleboat that we enjoyed using.

Located minutes from Ladysmith to the south, and a short drive north to Nanaimo, it was close enough to all the activities and attractions we desired, and yet secluded enough that we felt "away from it all". The house was extremely clean, and well decorated with beautiful spacious rooms and gorgeous views. We felt comfortable and "right at home" the minute we walked in the door. The layout of the bedrooms in addition to the spacious living-room provided a great deal of flexibility. The kitchen was well equipped and all the available appliances were more than adequate for our needs.

We really cannot say enough about our wonderful experience there. We would definitely go back if we had the chance.

The town of Ladysmith is a rare gem. Much of its architectural heritage remains intact, dating back to the turn of the 20th century when many of its buildings were moved here and new homes constructed to house coalminers for Dunsmuir's Colliery at Wellington. Visitors can walk the old railway grade at Morden Colliery Park and Trail, or delve deeper into the town's early history at the Ladysmith Museum, though a simple stroll through the hillside town overlooking Oyster Bay will help visitors understand why Harrowsmith Country Life nominated Ladysmith as one of the ten prettiest towns in all of Canada. Brightly painted heritage homes and buildings built on sloping streets house antique shops, and boutiques as well as the 'Old Town Bakery,' voted 'Vancouver Island's Best Buns' for their assortment of Cinnamon Buns, pastries and pies. A great stop for coffee and artisan bread, don't miss another local hot-spot which fires up later in the day: Robert Street Pizza Co. Either location will provide picnic material for a visit to Transfer Beach Park, which boasts an enormous playground, a waterpark, a sand volleyball court, an east facing beachfront and an amphitheatre which hosts concerts throughout the summer and events like the 'Brits on the Beach' car show on July 14th. In addition to the public amenities (which include a concession and bathroom) the beach-park also features an Eco Adventure Centre which houses 'Sealegs Kayaking Adventures,' who rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards as well as provide lessons and tours, www.sealegskayaking.com. Other water related activities are available at the Ladysmith marina, including Harbour tours, a maritime museum featuring heritage boats, and an oceanside restaurant. Tours run twice a week provided by the Ladysmith Maritime Society, and they host a Maritime festival in early June.

Other opportunities for Active Living include several hiking trails which range from marine trails to steep wooded loops suitable for hiking or trail-running, one of which hosts the Gutbuster Run on July 7th. Three golf courses are all within 20 minutes drive (one in Cedar, one in Ladysmith, and another in Chemainus). Chemainus is known for its murals, but also hosts a live theatre festival featuring daytime children's theatre and adult live theatre. This year's production of 'Singing in the Rain' is being well received, and boasts choreography faithful to Gene Kelly's original chreography from the 1952 movie. Can't wait to see how they do the 'Make 'em laugh' sketch! Fancy a flight? Float planes fly out of Oyster Bay most days, and the Nanaimo Airport at Cassidy is only 12 kilometres away. Downtown Nanaimo and ferries to Gabriola Island, or aquabuses over to Newcastle Island are 22 kilometres distant. Nanaimo has its own theatre, lots of bigger stores, malls, and cinemas, as well as Ferry Service to Horseshoe Bay (North Vancouver) and to Tsawwassen (South Metro Vancouver) via the Duke Point Ferry Terminal only 15 kilometres from the cottage.

Parksville and the best beach on East Vancouver Island at Rathtrevor are a one half-hour drive from the cottage, while it will take an hour and a half to get to Victoria by car. Duncan is only half an hour South, and worth visiting for the working steam train rides at the Forest Discovery Centre on the Trans-Canada Hwy, as well as the learning opportunities and flying demonstrations at the Northwest Raptor Centre just off the Highway at the North end of Duncan.

Closer to the cottage, if pottery and crafts are your thing, build your own artisan tour of the Cedar and Yellowpoint Area visiting studios, galleries and farms in the neighbourhood, www.cyartisans.com. JoVic pottery and raku is across the road, 200m distant, and a further 200 metres walk away fine dining awaits at the Bistro at Page Point Inn and Marina. The Cedar farmer's market happens every Sunday from Mother's Day to Thanksgiving in the fields adjacent to the 'Crow and Gate Pub,' 2313 Yellowpoint Rd., Vancouver Island's signature rural English country pub which misses the mark only in as much as unlike proper British country pubs, children are not permitted on the premises due to Provincial Liquor Laws.

McNab's Corn Maze is a fantastic autumn activity for children of all ages, www.mcnabscornmaze.com, and tours of Yellowpoint Cranberries, where they produce crops of 200,000 plus pounds yearly, are available beginning in September, www.yellowpointcranberries.com
