Trickledown is situated on Big Creek close to Highlands, NC. There is a King bedroom and bath with a large shower upstairs next to a large sitting room with a library and tv. Downstairs there is a queen bedroom and bath with a jacuzzi tub. The large gathering area has a botanical and biographical library and tv, fireplace and dining area. The kitchen has all amenities including a coffee/bar 'nook'. All across the back is a long screen porch and Big Creek sounds. There is a sitting area with a wicker sofa and rocking chairs on one side and a dining area on the other. Easy access to the kiln dried wood pile and the outdoor grille. The path to the creek features an iris garden. Other areas outside have 'special' garden areas like a moss garden, meditation garden, grandchildren's garden, succulent garden, 'gnome' path.
We live in Atlanta, GA about 2.5 hours from Highlands.
Jane Black purchased this cottage in 2007
My grandparents built a vacation home in Highlands in 1935. I visited during the summer while growing up and the area still feels like 'home'. The sound of the creek is what drew us to this current property.
The weather is delightful all summer and not severe very often during the winter. Gardening is easily successful because of the weather.
This was our second stay at Trickledown. Based on our recommendation, two other couples have stayed there as well. We love the place. The winter does bring its challenges. We had no water for about 36 hours. The temperature fell to -10 with -30 wind chill. We still had heat, electricity and the fireplace. The driveway was literally frozen over and we had to park on the also ice covered Big Creek Lane. This mad unpacking and packing treacherous. Nonetheless, we had a great adventure. We were cozy and had our dogs with us. This is our place to go to get away. We would not stay anywhere else.
My wife and I, along with our golden retriever, spent 3 glorious days at "Trickledown" in October. The cottage came highly recommended by some of our friends, but everything about our stay exceeded all of our expectations. If ever there is a home away from home, this is it! The gracious owner has not overlooked any details to make the visit as memorable as possible, equipping the kitchen wonderfully, and furnishing the residence with treasured family antiques, as well as a impressive gardening library.
Trickle down's location just north of town is ideal, making side trips to Whiteside and Cashiers very convenient, as well as excursions into Highlands for dinners and shopping.
The superlatives are endless........and most of all we hope to return as soon as possible for another relaxing visit.
My wife and 7 month old son had one of the nicest getaways we could have imagined. Trickledown is in a perfect location.....extremely secluded, down a little used dirt road, but close to town and everything that Highlands has to offer. Jane has clearly invested a lot of time and effort into the details of the cottage. The pictures really don't do it justice. It is an updated, quaint, cozy place that we enjoyed several wonderful days. Our son loved sitting out on the porch in the sunshine, and we had some great nights sitting by the fire. The beds were extremely comfortable and the bathrooms first rate. I've stayed in five star hotels that had less class. And every room was tied together perfectly, from the indian artifacts to the pictures on the wall to the collection of books. The grounds are meticulously maintained....you feel like you're in in an arboretum walking around the little gardens surrounding the property. We are looking forward to getting back there soon....fall was fantastic and we can only imagine Christmas time there in December.
This was the first trip to a cottage in the mountains for us (me & husband). The cottage is as lovely and well appointed as the other visitors have stated. The king bed is very comfortable and the linens are luxurious. We especially liked the screened porch and the lovely view of the water and foliage.
While we enjoyed the cottage very much, the setting was a little too rustic for us. We would have had more fun if we had rented an SUV. I think you need one to navigate the steep driveway and narrow roadways. Probably our age (65 ish) but we did not feel comfortable driving out or back to the cottage in the dark.
Fantastic property! I hated to leave. Close to Highlands, secluded and private, gorgeous landscaping and view. Well stocked with just about everything you would need for a vacation stay.
Our family of four just came back from a 3-night stay at Trickledown. To say we love it is a huge understatement. The cottage and the surrounding is a perfect union of artistic vision and design. The decor, furnishings, and everything you touch and use convey comfort and luxury. Trickledown will always hold a special place in our heart. Where else can one find a cottage blending so harmoniously with the natural surroundings and offering all the modern comfort and classic beauty. In our book of 10+ years world travel, Trickledown is among the top. A truly enchanting cottage! Thank you Jane for doing such an outstanding job with your cottage. It is a lot of hard work and...artistic talent too.
