POPO'S TREEHOUSES, CARRILLO BEACH, SURFING, KAYAKING, ADVENTURES!

Playa Samara Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Costa Rica is a paradise for lovers of wildlife, adventure, blue skies, ocean waves lapping sandy shores and rivers winding through lush forests. It's a slower pace with a laid-back rhythm.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, are adventurous, self-sufficient, and in good condition [NOT appropriate for VERY small children]--- read on. If you're looking for 5 star pampering, it's not the place for you, [ a reviewer just described it, aptly, as '5-star camping'! ].

The treehouses are very basic but have WiFi, and nice, small kitchens; besides good beds and full bathrooms.

If you want adventure, you can keep busy for days.

Click on 'Photos and More Information' for Tad's [Popo's] web site and additional pictures at the bottom of this listing-------------------------------

There are two 'Treehouses' built of local woods and tree trunks, with upper and lower level porches with tables, chairs and small kitchens. These are in a compound close to the main house. The BEAUTIFUL beach is just several hundred yards down the road. All the windows are screened but you will rarely see any flying insects, [apparently, a few people are bothered by them, however]. The bedroom is on the upper level with the bath and kitchen below in the midst of lush planting [the lushest time is after the green season kicks in,-- June until Dec.]

Each treehouse sleeps four in one bedroom with an overhead fan, a bedside reading lamp, a double bed and twin bunks, plus a private bath with heated water. There is a new, small kitchen in each.

Dec. through April is dry. The nights are in the 70's and days in the 80's to 90's. The nights are usually cool enough to use a light blanket The 'green' months--later in the summer until Nov., are very lush with more chance of rain showers and are more humid. November to April is about 10 or so degrees cooler than later in the year.

IN SEASON,the howler monkeys arrive and the toucans and humming birds come to feast on the papayas left for them. There are also roosters and dogs in the distance. It's a different world, with more natural sounds than we are used to. Most people love it, but that may not appeal to you.

Tad [Popo], Susie and the children [7, 17, 19 ,21 yrs.old] are totally bilingual and love to interact with guests. They, naturally, can guide and advise you about everything there is to do.

Tad's main business is river and sea kayaking in his 2-person, 'sit-on-top' kayaks; float trips down the nearby ecologically diverse Rio Ora or out to the nearby islands in the ocean; and adventuring everywhere. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna and knows every little nook and cranny along the coast line. Don't miss the experience of a kayak trip with him!

There is also great, protected ocean swimming at the lovely, nearly private beach; [by law one cannot build within 50 meters of the high tide line] plus any adventure trips you might like to take, and biking, hiking, snorkeling, horseback riding, waterfalls, canopy tours [great fun!], Ultra-light rides, and on and on - all nearby.

Rentals of bikes, horses, etc. are also available nearby. You can arrange to have the horses brought right to your door.

Susie's Language School and son, Chicho's, Blue Barrel Surf School's office are right next door.

Carrillo is still a laid back little village. Within a 5 minute walk, there are funny little restaurants, a few upscale ones, and the Guanamar Resort/ Sport Fishing Hotel just 100 yards down the road. It has a bar, restaurant, Internet access, etc.

If you pine for funky little shops, bars, music and lots of activity, Samara is just three + miles away, on a GREAT NEW PAVED ROAD ALL THE WAY FROM SAN JOSE [I can't stress how important a PAVED road is---no ruts or CLOUDS of dust !] At the many diverse restaurants there, and in great ones in Carrillo, you will find great meals for much lower prices than you are used to. There is a fantastic one for BBQ just across from PoPo's entrance.

The local 'casado' [rice and beans, salad, veg. and meat or fish, ---all on one plate] goes for about $3.50 - $4.00 and the prices go up to about $10.00-$18.00 for delicious steaks and jumbo shrimp. However, prices are continually changing here, too.

The beach, Playa Carrillo, is just several hundred yards down the road [4-5 minute walk]. It's one of the most beautiful, clean, unspoiled beaches in Central America. You will usually have it all to yourselves. Its white sand stretches for over a mile around a semi-circular bay rimmed by shady palms. The water is kept calm by a reef at the entrance to the bay which makes it ideal for swimming [great for children] and for water sports.

The surrounding exotic flora and fauna remain untouched. At dusk, if you want a treat, stroll down to the beach and watch the flaming ball of the sun sink into the Pacific. Salt Water Magazine has named Puerto Carrillo as the top sport fishing spot in the WORLD, several times!

Eco-tourists come to Costa Rica to get involved with the environment and to commune with nature. Carrillo is still Costa Rica as it was before all the developers moved in---{ recently some developers are just beginning to discover it, too]. Most eco-tourism places charge their guests highly for the privilege of living more basically than they would at home, but we just want everyone to have a chance to enjoy this before it's all gone.

Quite a few airlines fly into Liberia-- about a 2 hour drive to Popo's, or to San Jose-[now, with the new road, only a 3 or so hour drive, by way of Oratino and Punteranas]. Without a car, local buses and bikes are an option. There is a shuttle service, which leaves early AM from hotels in San Jose. This option requires an overnight stay in/near San Jose as the early AM daily trip doesn't work with the available plane arrivals.

LIBERIA does not have a shuttle service going south to Carrillo but a rental car can be delivered to the airport for you or you can make arrangements with Popo to be met by taxi. With all the places to go and see, a car is a good option, although there is a local bus and local taxis are inexpensive.

My wife, Susie, and I have been living here in Carrillo for about 21 years. We have four children still at home and we are all completely bi-lingual. We often visit the States but always long to get back to Carrillo.

Susie takes care of the treehouses and I concentrate on the kayaking trips, teaching surfing, and adventure trips [custom].The ecology here fascinates me and there is nothing I like more than to introduce visitors to it and teach them all about it, then, in return, to get to know all about our guests. Tad

Tad or Susie purchased this cabin in 1993

Tad: I came here from Colorado in 1991, met, and married Susie,[a beautiful Costa Rican girl] and have never left! We built our place here because it is near our lovely beach and great little town of Carrillo. It's also near a fantastic surfing beach [all our kids and I are surfers]. We have great restaurants and a laidback lifestyle but the nearby town of Samara has LOTS more frenetic activity, if you like that and want additional variety in restaurants and shops.

Our roads are now beautifully paved but there is still the same lovely, laid-back atmosphere as before for a complete change from the rush of elsewhere, nowadays. Go kayaking and spot wildlife or Indian relics, lie on a beautiful, empty beach; go surfing at our fantastic double-break surfing spot; go horseback riding or on a 4-wheeler, watch the big red ball of sun sink into the Pacific; whizz over the treetops and look down at orchids and monkeys on the canopy tour. Pore over the locally made trinkets or pottery for sale. At night, enjoy the many restaurants with great food and drinks at great prices. THAT's why we choose to live here!

Back to nature! Who wouldn't enjoy a few nights in a tree house? If you never did it as a kid, now's your chance---and let your kids experience it. It's a complete contrast to ANYTHING they're going to be doing in today's world!

AWESOME RENTAL AND AWESOME ADVENTURES!!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed at Popo's treehouse during our visit to Tico land. It was an awesome experience. The treehouse was super. Nothing better than sleeping in a treehouse with monkeys and birds for background music. That's the only way to experinece CR living as real as it gets. We stayed at Popo's for a short time, as we were travelling quite a bit of the country. Our first day we rented some boards from Popo's son's board shop and attempted to ride some waves. Didnt work out to well. But at least we tried. The beach near Popo's is probably one of the best in all CR, i know i travelled the whole country. Our 2nd day we asked Popo to take us on a kayaking adventure. As they do offer up a lot of possibilities for adventuring around the lands and waters. Let me tell you that was probably the best adventure to take, as Popo is very knowledgeable and can explain everything to you during the paddle through the jungle. We will be surfing that secret beach our next time there. Every morning we would wake to fresh fruit and toast with the best jam known to man. All in all it was our favorite spot in all of CR. Great famliy, great accomodations. We will be back again!!

AMAZING!

  • 5 of 5
Popo's Treehouse was an amazing adventure for us. Tad was extremely accomodating. Our flight into San Jose and drive to the coast put us at his place around 1am local time. Tad was available to great us and show us around.

Breakfast is included each morning and the coffee plus fresh fruit is a delight.

The beach is a short walking distance and was nearly empty every day we were there. No crowds to worry about in Puerto Carrillo. It is a very quiet town and extremely safe.

Tad and Suzie gave us great information about local restarants and activities. Even short cuts that took us through dried out river beds. We really got to see all parts of Costa Rica.

This is the place to stay if you want to relax and enjoy a bit of nature. The treehouse has everything you need. The shower has great water pressure and the bathroom is clean. The kitchen has a cooktop and refridgerator. The porch upstairs has a hammock and chair and the bedrooms sleeps 4 comfortably.

We will definitely be back to Popo's on our next trip to Costa Rica.

Thanks!

CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN TO POPO'S!!

Can't wait to return to Popo's!!

We had scoped out this place several years ago on VRBO and we finally got our opportunity to stay here.. what an absolutely incredible experience! This was our first visit to Costa Rica and we spent several days here and then moved up to the Arenal Volcano area. By far the most memorable and relaxing part of our vacation was our stay at Popo's. Playa Carrillo is a quiet little area away from the tourist crowds, where you can just truly relax and get some exposure to true Costa Rican culture (which is often lacking in the big touristy hotels). What really makes this place even more special is getting to meet Tad and Susie along with their family. Tad knows all of the best kept secrets of places to go in Costa Rica-- every recommendation he made to us was right on target, whether it be local restaurants or places to see. We did not even begin to be able to do it all in our short stay here. It was also so pleasant every morning to be served the most delicious coffee and plate of fresh fruit/toast (prepared by Susie!) ever. We had a blast on our snorkel/kayak tour led by Tad and his son. Carrillo beach is absolutely gorgeous and perfect for swimming-- our son had a great time boogie boarding in the waves. Oh, and bring a portable hammock for down by the beach.... there are perfect trees for this (Susie was so very kind and she loaned me some rope so that I could hang my hammock that I purchased at one of the shops in Samara). Another highlight of our stay was hearing the howler monkeys......something we will NEVER forget! Although our 17 yr old son was really looking forward to moving up to the Arenal Volcano area, after we got there and checked into our hotel he said, "Mom, this hotel is ok, but Popo's has SO much more character!" He said he would rather stay at Popo's and hear the birds and roosters in the morning (rather than the hum of the air conditioner at the hotel). My husband and I could not agree more! Thank you, Tad and Susie, for all of your kind hospitality! We will be back!

Thanks for the kind words, it was a pleasure to have all of you around.
You are a beautiful person with a great family---always happy, enjoying every single moment you were here---whether lying in a hammock on the beach or filming howler monkeys at night!
I hope you will come back SOON, I miss you! Susie [and family}

BEAUTIFUL FAMILY, REALLY GREAT TIME

  • 4 of 5
We spent 4 nights here at Popo's at the end of this year and we really had a marvelous time. Thank you so much Tad and Susana and kids for making us feel so welcome and opening up your home to us. We felt so cared for and the company (after being on our own for a few weeks) was so great. Both our kids miss Noni so much and talk about him as their favourite part of Costa Rica! They had a blast playing Monopoly together! New Year's was so much sharing it with you all and Andrew and Amy and family (our next door treehouse neighours). We have fantastic memories of Carillo. Highlights, cozy sleeps in the treehouse (which are really fun, clean and lovely), the amazing horseback riding trip with Luis, lighting lanterns with you all on the beach on new years and Carillo beach itself which is stunning. Oh, and the empanada lady who sold us the most delicious empanadas ever on the beach. We hope to see you all again soon. You know when we buy our place there we'll be taking the coast trip up to visit! Pura vida!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review, Kim. We're so glad you had such a good time and appreciated everything Carrillo has to offer. The Dream Lanterns on the beach on New Years are fun and memorable and Luis' horseback rides are always a big hit! Noni had such fun with your kids but says, "Everytime I make new friends, they leave!" Please do come back to see us when you move down! Tad and Susana

FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE IN POPO'S TREEHOUSE HAPPY PLACE!

Fantastic experience in Popo's Treehouse happy place!
  • 5 of 5
Popo's was exactly what we were looking for as we arrived to the last leg of our Costa Rica getaway. The cozy, rustic tree houses perfectly captured the essence of the rain forest. We were surrounded by tropical vegetation, birds chirping all around us, howler monkeys howling away. We had our own little home in the jungle. Even though it was in the jungle and in the rainy season, the unit was very clean and free of nature's elements (like little buggies).
Even though we were tucked away and enjoyed privacy, we were also able to have a great shared experience kayaking, snorkeling, and surfing through Popo's. They set up everything for us and all we had to do was show up in swimsuits with camera in hand.
Suzanna was an awesome host for us and truly has a passion for sharing her home of Costa Rica with her guests. She greeted us warmly, fed us breakfast, and made us feel right at home. We plan to stay in close touch and return again one day soon. When I close my eyes and go to my happy place, I am brought back to our little oasis in the jungle. Thanks Suzanna and Thad! We will certainly be meeting again.

Owner's Response: Hi Lauren,

Thanks for your wonderful review. It was a great pleasure meeting and spending time with you and Sean, I really enjoyed being with you two--- you are such happy, active, outdoor people.

It was great fun, the last night, discussing your plans for the future.

I do hope you will come back, soon, and that Tad will be here, then, as I know he will enjoy you as much as I did. Susanna
