Machico is a tranquil picturesque town located on the south east side of the island. It was the landing point of the discoverers of Madeira in 1419. Machico prides itself on having the oldest church in Madeira dating back to the 15th century, and has two forts and numerous other places of historical interest.
It has a beautifully paved promenade dotted with fountains and a wonderful golden sand beach with crystal clear waters and good facilities for swimming and sunbathing.
Local amenities include restaurants, bars, public garden and parks, supermarkets, shops, banks with ATM's , post office, clinic, pharmacy.
Machico is well serviced with buses and taxis.
Campo do Golfo is conveniently situated close to Machico at Santo da Serra and the airport is a 5 minute drive away.
Machico is a good starting point for many of the breathtaking levada walks on the northeast side of the island,and is a relaxing alternative to the hustle and bustle of Funchal which is a twenty minute drive away.
