Featured in the Times '50 Best Villas in the Caribbean' list, 15 November 2014
'The overall effect is a mash-up of Mad Men, Rudyard Kipling and James Bond. Features include a deep veranda, white cathedral ceilings, old metal fans, white muslin and a bathtub at the foot of the master bedroom's four-poster.' The Sunday Times, 6 June 2013.
'Cross Gone with the Wind with an early Bond film (think Dr No) and the resulting style will be something akin to that of Naomi Cleaver's gorgeous house on the Caribbean island of Nevis: ceiling fans, white muslin, lush colours and romantic verandas, plus leggy furniture, graphic fabrics and sleek mid-century minimalism.' Katherine Sorrell, Daily Telegraph magazine, 23 October 2010.
'Naomi Cleaver has kept it simple – white-painted wooden floors, cathedral ceilings and walls (except in the living room with grey/blue tones inspired by a cactus in the garden). And she brought over her Fifties’ furniture that was upholstered to match. The whole look’s a fantasy blend of Mad Men, Somerset Maugham and James Bond.' Cheryl Markosky, Primelocation.com
The Galleries has 5,500 feet of living space, with two double bedrooms – one air conditioned – three bathrooms, large living room, vast kitchen, studio and an air-conditioned media room with WiFi, Hi-Fi, books and over a hundred movies on DVD.
There is an acre of garden, featuring mahogany, banana, citrus, palm and mango trees and a variety of cactus, and bird life including herons, white egrets, warblers, banana quits, grass quits, finches and hummingbirds.
Plus a 70 foot swimming pool, with outdoor shower, loungers and eating area.
We have been visiting for over 20 years, and we've owned the villa there since 2005. We lived there for two years 2008-2010 while we managed a major refurbishment. Naomi wrote her book 'The Joy of Home' there (Conran Octopus 2010).
Naomi Cleaver purchased this villa in 2005
The villa is elegant and funky, mainly stone and wood with natural breeze and a wide wraparound veranda gallery. There is secluded 70 foot pool and large airy kitchen. Nevis itself is small and peaceful (there are no traffic lights!) but with plenty to do - hiking, cycling, sailing, golf and tennis - plus beautiful beaches and romantic plantation house restaurants.
Designed and refurbished by Naomi Cleaver, designer, author and TV presenter ('Other People's Houses', 'Britain's Best Home', 'Honey, I Ruined the House', 'Grand Designs Trade Secrets', etc.) www.naomicleaver.com
The Galleries really has a sense of understated elegance. The photographs show exactly what the house is like. It really is that good!
Oliver and Naomi's beautiful Nevis home is simply perfect for a totally relaxing and peaceful vacation. We have been visiting Nevis for 20 years and are totally in love with the island. Their house is perfectly situated in a lovely part of the island on a residential road very close to beautiful beaches, an array of gorgeous restaurants and short drive into town. I spoke to Oliver many times before and during our holiday and he was always incredibly helpful and provided valuable information and advice.
The house was immaculately clean and provided everything that we needed.
It was wonderful being able to eat on the veranda watching humming birds and monkeys during the day and fireflies in the trees during the night.
The villa is very spacious (we were 2 adults and 2 children plus another couple for the last few nights) and is on two floors with an additional bedroom situated separately on the upper floor. We found that even though the days were really hot we didn't need to use the aircon at night as the fans and the breeze cooled us enough. Naomi has designed the house to embrace the nature and tropical surroundings. We loved swimming in the pool while the curious monkeys came to have a look at us!
Nevis is a laid back, unspoilt caribbean island and very little has changed in the last 20 years. The local people are warm and welcoming and I feel very lucky to call many our friends.
If you are looking for a totally laid back vacation on a tiny caribbean island in a fabulous house this is the place for you
The Galleries is an amazing place to stay. The house is beautiful and the gardens tranquil. Perfect for families or couples with space for all.
The Galleries is on the amazing Isalnd of Nevis which has so much to do and many areas to explore.
• Oualie beach – great for swimming (seeing turtles), lazing around and watching the sunset.
• A walk in the rainforest and a scramble up the waterfalls
• Cycling and swimming - visit Winston at Oualie beach and hire a bike and cycle round the Island early in the morning. Swim at Oulie beach (and see turtles) and if possible do the cross channel swim to St Kitts - Amazing.
• Lunch at Golden Rock – outstanding views and great food.
• Get on a boat and go to St Kitts for the day
The Galleries, an easy walk from the beach, let us quickly unwind and catch up on much needed family time with it's relaxed layout and atmosphere. This was our first trip back to Nevis after 10 years and all was made easy with Oliver's help organizing the transfers and logistics.
The house feels private and quiet, with only the sound of birds and monkeys to listen to each morning. Perfect for a holiday escape!
We enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon on Nevis staying at the Galleries. Each day brought new surprises, activities, and experiences. Nevis is a fantastic destination and The Galleries is the perfect base to explore from.
Amelia and Oliver made the booking and arrival process completely stress-free. From stepping off the plane we were in good hands, and the water taxi ride from St. Kitts to Nevis was an incredible way to approach the island.
Amelia met us at the dock and brought us to the house, and called periodically to check in. She was always just a phone call away whenever we had any questions, and was instrumental in making us feel comfortable.
The house is situated in a wonderful location. It feels incredibly private and isolated, with beautiful views over the sea to St. Kitts. However, it is very centrally located. Oualie beach with it's activities was only a two minute drive. Pinney's Beach with its beach bars was a 5 minute drive, and beautiful Lovers and Nisbet beaches within 10 minutes.
The house was spotlessly clean and well appointed. We cooked breakfast and dinner in the spacious kitchen a number of times and lacked for nothing. Indeed, enjoying a dinner of freshly-caught fish on the front veranda was one of the most special memories of our trip. While the house does have air conditioning, we only used it once or twice - the house gets great breezes through the bedroom.
We slept well every night and loved waking up to the sounds of birds and monkeys and enjoying coffee on the veranda. We enjoyed watching all of the wildlife from the hammock or while floating in the pool.
For such a small island, Nevis has lots to do. We enjoyed exploring the New River Estate ruins and walking along the Windward beaches. Snorkeling along Paradise and Nisbet Beachs gave us some great looks at reef fish and even cuttlefish. We had a fantastic day of deep sea fishing with Hugh and Louisa from Caribbean Catch. However, our favorite days were lazy drives around the island, comparing the rum punches at all the different plantation inns (Golden Rock and Hermitage tied for first; Double Deuce, Sunshine's and a drink mixed on the back of some dude's tailgate in second) and lying around the fabulous pool.
The Galleries offered us everything we wanted for a honeymoon - a stylish house with loads of character, a romantic vibe, and situated in a beautiful location! We'll be recommending Nevis and The Galleries to anyone looking for a magical vacation.
Thank you for allowing us to stay at your amazing house. You have really created a very special home and it's wonderful that others are able to share it. The Galleries really has a sense of understated elegance. The photographs show exactly what the house is like. It really is that good! The views are stunning and there are so many different places to spend time around the house or in the grounds, be it on the wraparound terrace or down by the fantastic pool - spending time with the monkeys (they really are very shy!). The transfer arrangements from the airport were excellent, including a beer on the speedboat transfer - both Marlon and Amelia were really very helpful and thoughtful in settling us in. Nevis is wonderfully laid back with an air of the Caribbean that has been lost almost everywhere else. We are already checking the calendar for when we can return and have recommended both Nevis and The Galleries to our friends. Thank you once again for a truly wonderful experience at your home in Nevis. Nick & Tracy
We have had a wonderful month's stay in Nevis, staying at the Galleries. We arrived in the evening after a long journey. Amelia met us at the dock and took us to the villa which was spotlessly clean and fresh (thanks to Anita) and lit up, which looked very welcoming. Cold beers provided in the fridge which were much needed. The house is as pretty as the photographs. The master bedroom is very comfortable. We slept with all the shutters open, no a/c needed, listening to the trees rustling in the breeze. Our first morning, we were woken to monkeys clambering over the roof and chattering round the garden. These are not aggressive monkeys! We had breakfast on the veranda every morning with views to St. Kitts. Made friends with the birds who appreciated the odd cornflake and brown sugar in the bird feeder. The pool area is very private and the pool long enough for our morning laps. We spent many an afternoon reading in the hammock and swing chair on the veranda. We found eating out very expensive, so tended to have supper at the villa watching one of the many dvd's in the library. Plus barbecued a couple of times. The kitchen is well stocked and huge. Any problems or queries we had, we contacted both Amelia and Oliver, who responded immediately and were most helpful. If you have a problem with mosquitoes, bring repellent and sting relief. The house is well screened and mosquito spray and coils were provided, but we did get a few bites round and about.
We found lots to do on the island. We did the waterfall walk with Reggie, which was quite challenging and enjoyable. Did some kayaking, plus bikes are easy to hire, but take care on the roads as the driving could be a little suspect. We explored the ruined sugar mills and mansions. Every evening we watched the sun set either from the little beach opposite (which has loads of conch shells), Oualie Bay (our favourite beach), or the Sunset Bar next to the airport, which has the cheapest beer on the island and is charming. Golden Rock, Bananas and Chrissies are very good for lunch.
We spent many afternoons on Oualie beach sipping rum cocktails or a carrib and snorkelling. We saw a lot of turtles, and enjoyed watching the yachts and fishing boats coming in and out of the bay. A wonderful holiday.
Nevis is old-fashioned Caribbean. Just five miles wide, it’s a relaxed island rounded by beaches and rising through rainforest to a 3,200 ft peak.
“On the map Nevis is a pool of green champagne. Life here seems defined by the constant, although somewhat half-hearted, struggle to achieve maximum comfort for minimum effort.' Sunday Times, April 11, 2010.
Nevis has plenty of places to visit, from old plantation inns (like Montpelier, where Nelson was married in 1787, and The Hermitage), to funky beach bars (Double Deuce, Sunshine’s) and romantic restaurants set high in the rainforest (Golden Rock, Bananas).
There is tennis and an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. championship golf course. Hiking, cycling and horse riding are easy to arrange, as well as scuba diving and kayaking. We can also organise fishing charters and day sails.
We can also arrange car hire for your stay. But please note: there are no traffic lights on Nevis
