This private, secluded and charming Old Hawaii style Ohana cottage (family home) is a stand alone dwelling just 5 minutes from beautiful Kealakekua Bay, Manini Beach, and Ke’ei Beach. The bay is famous for its incredible snorkeling, standup paddling, kayaking and opportunities to swim with the local pod of spinner dolphins.
The cottage consists of separate living quarters making it perfect for the longer staying guests. A living room/bedroom with a queen-size bed, a well appointed kitchen with full size refrigerator, washer/dryer, bistro table, gas barbeque, covered lanai with outdoor seating, lua, and a private outdoor shower all with panoramic views of the South Kona coastline. Along with charming Old Hawaii ambiance, enjoy the modern conveniences of wireless internet, cable, and flat screen TV with DVD player. The cottage is surrounded by lush tropical gardens including palm, mango, papaya, avocado, banana, passion fruit and citrus trees along with many exotic flowering Hawaiian plants. The cottage is situated at the top back of the property, allowing for sweeping coastline views and privacy.
The property is well located, close to the beach and within minutes to shopping and restaurants, including a grocery store that carries many local and organic options, plus a weekly farmers market. Within walking distance is the Paleaku Peace Garden where guests can take yoga classes or spend a quiet meditative afternoon. Nearby also is the historic Painted Church and City of Refuge at Honaunau.
There are many hiking opportunities and local beaches waiting to be explored in this rural Kona neighborhood. A tandem ocean kayak is available on site as well, with lots of local knowledge as to the little known hot spots of this South Kona community.
We look forward to welcoming you to this Kona Coast power spot where you will experience the true Aloha spirit of Hawaii.
Peter and Barbara have mixed histories on the Big Island. Peter, a 20 year resident and recently retired, is enjoying all the water sports available within a few minutes of his home, especially snorkeling and stand up paddling. Barbara is newer to Hawaii and commutes from the main land to join Peter with his adventures as often as possible. Both are passionate about the South Kona area and give back to the community that has given them so much by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and Friends of Manini Beach. Peter is an avid gardener and when not on the water can be found planting, transplanting and trimming in his exotic Hawaiian garden. Barbara, when not following Peter on some bay or reef excursion, is busy identifying and learning the habits of the local birds that share the accommodations on their beautiful parcel of land. Both find time daily to sit quietly and watch incredible sunsets on Kealekakua Bay from the lanai of their recently renovated historic Hawaiian home.
Great rural location away from tourism, minutes from Kealakekua Bay and world class snorkeling, privacy within a low density area, incredible views. Being able to watch the whales in the bay from your lanais and the 'Hawaiiana' feel that the main house and cottages have.
Tropical gardens and fruit trees throughout property, including avocado, mango, papaya and various citrus trees.
Rural but close to shopping, restaurants, hiking and water sports.
Local knowledge shared for the little know 'hot spots' of this part of the island.
Minutes away from both the beaches and shopping, yet in a rural private setting that is truly 'Old Hawaii'. Historic Kealakekua Bay hosts a local pod of spinner dolphins which you can share the warm waters with. Well located for island excursions to Volcano National Park, and trips to the other side of the island. Or if you want to just hang in South Kona there are 4 or 5 beaches to explore with fantastic swimming, snorkeling, or paddling our 2 person kayak that is available on site. There are great hiking trails all along the coastline which are accessible at nearby trail heads.....including the 'King's Trail' which you can access from nearby 'City of Refuge National Park', (Honaunau). Spectacular coastline hike over arches and lava tubes while the surf pounds the shoreline right next to you. So much to do just within a few miles of this property. Truly, the people who come to hike, swim, snorkel, and just stay in this area wish they had more booked more time because there is just so much to do so close by. The elevation of the property is special also. We sit at about the 750 foot elevation which allows for perfect afternoon breezes and a temperature that is just a bit cooler that down at the beaches. That bit of coolness is so welcome as you come back after a day down in the hotter beach areas. And for sleeping at night the cooler temps make for a great night's rest.
South Kona really has so much to offer if you are looking to get off the tourist trail yet have all the great places to see that get missed by most visitors. Spectacular spots with low density....that is why we live there! Hope to share the aloha of the Big Island with you!
