Peter and Barbara have mixed histories on the Big Island. Peter, a 20 year resident and recently retired, is enjoying all the water sports available within a few minutes of his home, especially snorkeling and stand up paddling. Barbara is newer to Hawaii and commutes from the main land to join Peter with his adventures as often as possible. Both are passionate about the South Kona area and give back to the community that has given them so much by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and Friends of Manini Beach. Peter is an avid gardener and when not on the water can be found planting, transplanting and trimming in his exotic Hawaiian garden. Barbara, when not following Peter on some bay or reef excursion, is busy identifying and learning the habits of the local birds that share the accommodations on their beautiful parcel of land. Both find time daily to sit quietly and watch incredible sunsets on Kealekakua Bay from the lanai of their recently renovated historic Hawaiian home.

Great rural location away from tourism, minutes from Kealakekua Bay and world class snorkeling, privacy within a low density area, incredible views. Being able to watch the whales in the bay from your lanais and the 'Hawaiiana' feel that the main house and cottages have.

Tropical gardens and fruit trees throughout property, including avocado, mango, papaya and various citrus trees.

Rural but close to shopping, restaurants, hiking and water sports.

Local knowledge shared for the little know 'hot spots' of this part of the island.

Big Island Retreat

We spent almost a month at this property and it was as described and presented in the photographs. The gardens were beautiful and well maintained, the rental unit was clean and well maintained and had everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable right to the beach towels and beach chairs provided. The outdoor shower was beautiful! I really enjoyed living in screened areas, it was very much like luxury camping! There were roosters and turkeys on the neighboring properties, fun to watch and not close enough to disturb the quiet. The small property accommodated three dwellings - two rentals and the owner's house which at times felt a bit close. The owner was helpful with suggestions about things to do and areas to visit and was very hospitable. A vehicle is critical to your stay here, as the property is a significant distance from grocery shopping and beaches. The area has a lot of great opportunities for fun - snorkeling, hiking, sightseeing, tours etc. Just below the property is Big Island Bee's - a great place to learn about beekeeping and to sample delicious honey. We shopped at the local fishmarket (Bryan's), bought the very best Coconut Macroons from a fruit market nearby on the highway and ate one or two burgers at Annie's Burgers and Beer...very delicious! With such narrow windy roads we were not comfortable walking alongside the roadways as there was no shoulder whatsoever so there were no opportunities to walk from the property. In summary a great place to stay to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in Hawaii, to relax and a lovely place to come home to at sunset and watch the sun dip into the ocean, waiting for the "green flash"!

We had such a pleasant stay here at the cottage. It is really a beautiful and peaceful place and we absolutely loved it. Enjoyed the views and the serenity while sitting out on our private deck. The owner gave so many great recommendations of beaches and restaurants to go to and everything was easily accessible to the location. Can't say enough how comfortable we felt there it was definitely a home away from home. Looking forward to going back!

A great place to stay in our favorite place on earth

This is a great place to stay in one of our favorite places on earth - Kealakekua Bay

This is a collection of 4 small buildings (living/bed, kitchen/dining, bathroom and shower that are all connected via a covered walkway. It feels like a collection of tree-houses, each of which has a magnificent view of the bay - including a great view from the bed and most importantly, the corner lanai.

The living/bedroom has screens without much glass meaning you will go to sleep and awake to the sound of nature (mostly birds, geckos and the wind in the palm trees). We liked that but some may not - however if you don't then you're probably better off staying in an air-conditioned resort further north as you are very much in nature at Kealakekua Bay.

The owner who lives in the adjacent building is very helpful with local knowledge and advice but unobtrusive. He may say hello once a day if you are around but unless you need him you're kept to yourself.

I cannot say anything bad about this rental except that I am sorry I am not still there! There is a main house and two rentals on this property, and total privacy everywhere. This one had a separate kitchen with a table for two, walking out to a lanai to lounge on while catching a tropical breeze and stare at the view of the bay! My friend slept out here he loved it so much. There is a grill to put some local fish and tofu on. Then there is a separate bathroom and a separate living room/ bedroom! Four different places to be. A store nearby has all you need, and on the way to Manini'owali Beach to snorkel with the dolphins in the morning, you can stop and buy a lei, or get some local honey. There was a coffee co op that gave samples of coffee, nuts, and foods until you were stuffed! You are near the place of refuge, and more beaches as well. There was snorkeling gear to use, which I appreciated. The host at that visit was someone who you wanted as your friend. I recommend this place for your visit to the Kealakekua Bay. I never saw Kona, as it just did not matter. Get some Kona coffee on your way. Just south of the airport is Kona Mountain Coffee. The premium private reserve dark roast will get your day going. I hope to return to this rental as soon as I can!

Tranquil & private spot overlooking Kealekekua, Kiei & two step bays with easy access ti the main island road heading south to Volcanoes park & north to Kailua & Kohala beaches. comfortable, clean & cosy well equipped cottage with cable & wifi. Peter & Barbara are friendly & helpful. Great place to to stay off the beaten track & away from the tourist resorts as long as you have your own rental car. highly reconmended.

Minutes away from both the beaches and shopping, yet in a rural private setting that is truly 'Old Hawaii'. Historic Kealakekua Bay hosts a local pod of spinner dolphins which you can share the warm waters with. Well located for island excursions to Volcano National Park, and trips to the other side of the island. Or if you want to just hang in South Kona there are 4 or 5 beaches to explore with fantastic swimming, snorkeling, or paddling our 2 person kayak that is available on site. There are great hiking trails all along the coastline which are accessible at nearby trail heads.....including the 'King's Trail' which you can access from nearby 'City of Refuge National Park', (Honaunau). Spectacular coastline hike over arches and lava tubes while the surf pounds the shoreline right next to you. So much to do just within a few miles of this property. Truly, the people who come to hike, swim, snorkel, and just stay in this area wish they had more booked more time because there is just so much to do so close by. The elevation of the property is special also. We sit at about the 750 foot elevation which allows for perfect afternoon breezes and a temperature that is just a bit cooler that down at the beaches. That bit of coolness is so welcome as you come back after a day down in the hotter beach areas. And for sleeping at night the cooler temps make for a great night's rest.

South Kona really has so much to offer if you are looking to get off the tourist trail yet have all the great places to see that get missed by most visitors. Spectacular spots with low density....that is why we live there! Hope to share the aloha of the Big Island with you!
