Hilo House Rental Photos and Description

Grand Victorian Historic Property, 7 Bedrooms/6 Baths

This grand Victorian house is located by the historic Hilo downtown on the Reeds Island, a hidden jewel of Hawaii Big Island. In the old times, royal families occupied the prestigious 'island' with the Wailuku River flowing in the backyard and the tropical rain forest setting covering the grounds. Surrounded by the natural beauty and wild life, this beautiful house is placed on the National Registry for Historic Places.

Built by the British banker Thomas Guard in 1916, the property is grand, elegant, and a place of tranquility. The gracious living room has large sliding picture windows framing the magnificent canopy of nature across the river. A spacious dining room and family room are perfect for family gatherings. The enclosed veranda has large French windows and doors with a desk area and dining table, perfect for creative work and relaxing. The house has 7 spacious bedrooms and an open balcony on the second floor which faces the waterfalls and downtown Hilo Bay. The kitchen is large and updated as well as the washer and dryer in the roomy basement level.

The refined landscape garden ground has been meticulously cared for by our gardeners. Every direction offers lush green and tropical colors.

If you are seeking a beautiful place for relaxation and tranquility, this is the right place!

About Kari Yoshimura

I was born and raised in Beijing, China. Graduated from Peking University in 1983 with a degree in English Literature. Upon graduation I became an English teacher at university. I met my American husband on campus. We have been living in US for 26 years. This exquisite property surrounded by natural wonders is our sanctuary. Kari Yoshimura purchased this house in 2006

Why Kari Yoshimura chose Hilo

This is one of the most beautiful homes in Hilo. If you love beauty, refinement and tranquility, this is the place!

What makes this house unique

Reeds Island where the house locates is an exclusive community between two volcano rivers. Beautiful homes and fine neighbors are embracing and loving. Tropical rain forests and wildlife lie in every direction. A walk on the island is a step into natural beauty. It's ten minutes walk to historic Hilo downtown where boutique shops, galleries, restaurants and Farmers Market line the streets. Beeches, parks and Japanese garden are minutes away.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Our Hilo House experience was awesome. We loved the atmosphere of old houses and architecture. Fantastic bedrooms, you could hear the waterfall and birds at night. What it made fantastic were the details: fresh flowers in all rooms, the garden is maintained, the wooden floors, the marble baths, ... and as a passionate cook I highly appreciated good solingen knives (which is normally a deficit in most rented places), so I could cook breadfruit, taro and seafood from the local markets. As a party of three we enjoyed sitting on the terrace, plenty of room for all (would house parties up to 12-14 people, too)

Grand Experience!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful home! I rented this property as part of a larger vacation to celebrate my mother's 60th birthday. Hilo is her favorite part of Hawaii, and we wanted a house that could accommodate 7 people comfortably. This house was perfect; more than enough bedrooms (each with it's own bathroom), large well-appointed kitchen, laundry, and loads of gathering spaces. We spend most of our time in the kitchen and on the huge and comfortable front porch. Well located, easy to find but still felt secluded and private, and extremely clean and comfortable.

A lovely stay!

  • 5 of 5

Six of us stayed for 3 days to celebrate a birthday, grandmother, 2 sons, 2 teen grandsons and one daughter-in-law. The house was much bigger than we needed. We occupied the 4 bedrooms upstairs, and the one on the first floor. All were absolutely beautiful with views and/or sounds of the river below, and all had their own bathrooms. There were 2 more bedrooms in the basement but we didn't need those. Our stay was completely lovely. The house was much bigger than we expected, charming, super clean, spacious, beautifully furnished with fantastic wood and rattan pieces, sunny, especially downstairs where you are surrounded by french doors and big windows, equipped with great magazines, books, all the food staples we needed. The owner and managers really thought of everything. We would definitely come again to enjoy this very special house.

Amazing house!

  • 5 of 5

I grew up on the street where the house is and had passed it countless times, always admiring it, and never dreaming I could stay in it one day. Anyone that walked into the house was instantly in a good mood. It is old style Hawaiian charm from the soaring ceilings to the beautiful floor to ceiling windows. It rained everyday- we didn't care, we built a fire and ate lunch on the covered porch and enjoyed the koa rockers. There were umbrellas and we walked to the Farmers market and out to dinner in town. Everyone had their own room and bathroom- priceless. The kids had their own area in the basement with TV and bedrooms and bathroom- made them feel special. The kitchen was pretty well stocked to make Thanksgiving dinner- missing measuring spoons is all. The dining room table fit 11 easily. It had many thoughtful items like an ice chest we used for a picnic and 2 clothes dryers! We could not have had a better vacation. Thank you!

Magnificent Historic House

  • 5 of 5

The Hilo House is a magnificent historic property in an amazing private location near town. The property is beautifully landscaped, the large circular diveway is completely paved and can accomodate several cars. The house is located on a ridge with flowing creeks on both sides, so you can go to sleep with the sound of the water rushing in the background. We were there in October, so we also had the interesting entertainment of the unique Coqui frogs seranading at night with their bird-like cherps. The house is very spacious, clean and well maintained. Beautiful hardwood floors throughtout. Very comfortable, well maintained furniture and beds. Huge living and dining areas in this house. Each bedroom has access to it's own modern, updated bathroom with plenty of quality towels, so it would be a great place to stay for large families or groups of unrelated families. The huge front porch and glass enclosed lanai were our favorite places to be in the evenings. We were there for only three nights, so we did not cook meals, but the kitchen is well equipped and cooking would be no problems on longer stays. We were into our 6th day of travel, so the large and well equipped laundry area in the basement was really appreciated. The laundry area also had a selection of beach toys and plenty of beach towels. The house is within walking distance of the historic downtown area of Hilo if you're a strong walker. We preferred the 5 minute drive into town. But there is a fun ice cream stand about 5 minutes walk from the house. We found that our favorite place to eat in Hilo was Ken's Pancake House. Open 24 hours, amazing "regular food" menu, with a little Hawaiian flair. Resonable prices and good for kids. Apparently air conditioning in older houses in Hilo is not common because of the generally mild weather on the Hilo side of the island, so this house is not air conditioned on the main and upper floors. However, we did notice window air conditioners in the two bedrooms in the basement. But the house was very comfortable in the evenings and great for sleeping with the windows open. We'd definitely stay at the Hilo House if we came to the Big Island again.

Beautiful 6 night day stay at this Grand Home

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here 8/12-8/18. We absolutely loved this home! There was plenty of room for everyone to have private time and a wonderful family room for everyone to congregate and talk. We love that there was no TV in the family room, it made for great conversation and you really got to share your experiences from the day. The Lanai is an awesome place to catch a breeze and relax in the morning with coffee or in the afternoon with a cold beverage. The living room window opens up to a lush tropical scene and the breeze fills the entire home. We come from Houston and are not used to having windows open all the time or not having the doors locked 24/7, so it took some getting used to, but the neighborhood is VERY safe and after about the first day it was a non-issue. While we were there the maintenance man, Randy, was onsite and was very friendly. He gave us several locations to check out in the city and was never intrusive while working on the property during our stay. There is NO central A/C in this home and after an initial shock (again, we're from HOUSTON) we realized that it's not necessary. Fans are in every room and the temperature never rose outside of an acceptable comfort level. The kitchen was great, oven, microwave, large fridge, utensils, cups, plates etc...we wanted for nothing. The landscape was beautiful and there were several fruit trees on the property for us to enjoy! If we ever are blessed enough to come back to Hilo, this property will definitely be on our short list for another stay!

Beautiful Historic Home

  • 4 of 5

This lovely historic home was perfect for our extended family of 11 (3 grandparents, 2 brothers with spouses, 4 grandkids, ages 9-11). Hilo was a great base for our daily excursions and the home easily accommodated our large group. The managers were extremely helpful and nice, particularly with Hurricane Iselle threatening (they checked on us several times and brought us water, flashlights, and batteries). I would definitely recommend this house to others
