Joseph and Rebecca have lived in Maine for seven years. We love Maine and will gladly share our knowledge of the area during a stay at our home.
Joseph has worked with government and non-profit agencies focusing on the restoration of endangered Gulf of Maine Atlantic salmon through habitat improvement and river stability.
Joseph also produces homemade jams and BBQ sauces sold at his local stand.
Rebecca is a landscape manager working on Mount Desert Island with a focus on native plants and flower gardens.
The two of us love to garden. We have been growing large quantities of garlic and currently have dozens of varieties on the property.
Please feel free to ask us any questions about the property. Our goal is to create a welcome environment for you to enjoy.
Joseph McKerley purchased this house in 2010
This property is a classic. Built in 1860, the house still holds many of its unique qualities of the past. Its curved plaster walls, stained glass windows and fine wood trim work welcome you. The three covered porches prompt you to relax outside and enjoy a glorious Maine sunset with your ocean view of Union River Bay.
The property has a fenced in portion of yard that the pets of our guest are welcome to use.
We spent a long weekend at the house and enjoyed beautiful fall days, walks to the beach and pretty sunrises across the bay. The house is beautifully restored and is perfect for a family to relax in. The bedrooms are very comfortable and nicely decorated. It is also a great location for exploring this area of Downeast Maine.
We are glad we chose the Lobster Dog House as our vacation home. Rooms were neat and beautiful, kitchen is well equipped and we loved the yard, big enough for our dog to play. Joe, the owner, was very helpful throughout our stay. Bar harbor and Acadia national park are about 45 minutes from the house but we enjoyed the drive on all days. The carrying place beach, which is a mile from the house had great views. The water was a bit cold for us to get in, but our dog enjoyed swimming there.
We would definitely come back and stay here. A beautiful home in a beautiful and picturesque place!
First time visitor to Maine and didn't really know what to expect.
Glad that we stayed at the Lobster Dog House. It is close enough to the Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor but away from all the tourist places so that you can actually soak in a piece of the Maine life.
The house is great! - the yard is big enough for the dogs to play, the garden was beautiful, all the amenities included, and it was very charming. The house is attached to the owner's living quarters like one reviewer mentioned but it's very private and meeting the owners as well as their dog was a pleasant experience.
The accommodations at the lobster dog house were terrific. The living space was comfortable and gracious with many windows to soak in the professionally landscaped gardens that surrounded the House. The rooms were spotlessly clean and the attention to details were unsurpassed. I highly recommend this rental.
I don't know where to begin. Honestly. The owners made us welcome by email before we even arrived. We were greeted with open arms. The house is very comfy, with tons of charm, and we were provided more than we expected. We were even given an extra cot for my nephew, tips on where to go, tech help when the tv reset, and so much more. And the price for 2 families was cheaper than separate hotel rooms. If I or my friends are ever here again, this is my home away from home.
This is our second visit to this lovely home. We love coming here to bike and walk the scenic Newbury Neck area....as well as to bike the carriage roads in Acadia. This period home is spacious and spotlessly clean. We are sticklers on comfortable beds and bedding and thought the two rooms we have used were perfect. The kitchen appears to have plenty of essentials for people who do like to cook....but we only used it for small breakfast cooking and coffee. It's great to relax on the front porch and take in the view...grab a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening and sit for a while! We know we be coming back next year as the price is right and the accommodations are ideal. (Additional note: We needed some quick bike repairs and found a great bike/sport shop about 15 minutes away in Ellsworth. Handy to know this if you are going to be doing a lot of biking).
Newbury Neck Road is a mecca for cyclists, walkers, beach combers, sunbathers and surf casters. A beautiful, family friendly, quiet, pebble sand public beach is located less than 1 mile from the property and offers free parking and pets are welcome. The beach is a hidden jewel in an area where public access to beaches is hard to find.
Just next to the beach is 'Perry's Lobster Shack' where you can bring a bottle of wine to watch the sunset as they serve you a menu of lobster dinners, crab rolls, clams and ice cream on the pier overlooking Acadia N.P.
The rental property is adjacent to Blue Hill Heritage Trust lands which offer miles of woodland and coastal hiking. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are a short drive away. We are minutes away from the Blue Hill community where arts and fine dining abound. Less than 40 minutes to Mid-Coast Maine towns of Belfast and Camden. One hour from Bangor International Airport and 30 minutes to Bar Harbor International Airport. Miles of back roads, oceans vistas and quaint Downeast Maine small towns to explore.
